•Police: situation under control
The death of an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Samson Omowumi, in a land dispute at Ayegbaju-Ekiti in
Oye Local Government of Ekiti State, has caused tension in the community.
The police have arrested 20 persons in connection with the death.
Youths protested Omowumi’s death, whom they alleged was killed by “spiritual means.”
A source said the deceased suddenly developed a strange illness and was taken to a hospital where he died on Saturday evening.
The source said the youth yesterday marched on the streets, chanting war songs and demanding the head of the man suspected to be responsible for Omowunmi’s death.
They were said to have stormed the house of the suspect and attempted to torch it.
Activities were said to have been paralysed. Traffic was disrupted.
Policemen, who arrived later, saved the situation from degenerating.
Spokesman Alberto Adeyemi confirmed the violence and arrest of 20 persons.
He said investigation had begun, adding that the situation was under control.
Adeyemi said: “We warn residents against taking the law into their hands.”
