The people of Bayelsa State and the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide have derided a House of Representatives member, Mr. Aminu Suleiman and his committee for criticising the Federal Polytechnic Ekowe, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
Suleiman, a member representing Kano (Fagge Federal Constituency) and Chairman House Committee on Tertiary Education gave a gory picture of the polytechnic after a visit to the school.
Suleiman reportedly claimed that the polytechnic was infested with rats and lizards.
But the IYC said it was unhappy that the lawmaker and his committee gave such an uncomplimentary verdict about the only federal polytechnic in Bayelsa.
The Chief Law Officer of IYC, Mr. Igbeta Ayebakuro, in a statement expressed his disappointment at the comments of Suleiman saying it was obvious the lawmaker and his committee never visited the institution.
He said: “The whole nation is aware of the number of pseudo institutions doting the landscape of the north. We are calling on Aminu to refocus his energy to sponsoring meaningful bills in the House that will attract development to his educationally-disadvantaged people he represent.
“The rebranded IYC frowned at a situation where a person uses his office to either score cheap political points or blackmail public servants.”
He called on anti-graft agencies to thoroughly investigate the claims of the committee as it could have been motivated by anger following unmet financial expectations from the Rector and the management of the university.
“The Institution has been admitting students since establishment and has continued to receive such acknowledgement even from highly rated bodies like JAMB and has been participating in the activities of unions like the ASUP, which are in themselves clear pointer to the existence of the Institution contrary to Aminu’s claims, Barr. Igbeta added sternly.”
