A football fan known as Obinna Igwe has been shot dead during a fracas involving some policemen and a football team at Ikwo local government area of Ebonyi State.
The incident occurred during the final of the Unity Cup competition between Ndufu Alike FC and Ndufu Echara FC.
The tournament was sponsored by the Chairman of Ikwo LGA, Elder John Nnabo and it took place at Urban Secondary School Ndufu Echara.
Two other persons sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.
Two police officers were also injured in the fracas.
An eyewitness said trouble started when the centre referee issued a red card to an Ndufu Alike player and his team conceded a goal in the second half.
He said: “The development did not go down well with the dismissed player as he returned to the pitch and launched attack on the centre referee along with other players on the bench.
“As they attacked the referee, a police officer on the field started shooting into the air to disperse the crowd. The situation made the people to start running towards the gate of the school, but another police officer opened fire on them and injured many. The victims were later taken to hospital.
But Igwe was not lucky as he died before getting to hospital.
