Group empowers women on leadership skills

Empowering women with leadership skills so that they can be positive change agents within their community was the focus of a leadership training programme for women organized by Young Women Christian Association, Lagos State branch held last week at the Fellowship Centre, Anglican Lagos Anglican Diocesan Seminary Hall, Broad Street.

The training programme tagged Empowering Young Women to Lead Change program had 15 women from different profession which feature interactive session, role play and lectures on Human Rights, women in Leadership, justice, female Sexual, Health and Reproductive Rights, gender equality, among others.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of YWCA, Lagos State Branch, Mrs.Olapeju Shofowora said that the programme is aimed at providing a platform for making leaders of young women and girls, building them into change agents in their communities.

She noted that the training is designed to support the development of young women skills and to enable them to provide leadership on the issues that concern them. It offers engaging and dynamic activities to motivate and enable young women to believe in their abilities to catalyze change and to mobilise them to do the same.

Shofowora added that the module for the training foster self determined approaches to developing leadership skills and awareness of their strength and right. its practical opportunities for young women to determine and direct the changes in their lives.

She said that we can encourage the questioning of systems and beliefs that limit lives and choices. With courage we can confront even the injustices that have been in place before our lives began. By our leadership young women ensure that social change will not stop when the generation before us is no more, but only when peace, justice, health, human dignity and are for the environment  has been achieved everywhere, and for everyone.

She opined that the programme is a one year progamme which run across the globe and participants are expected to come with two projects to celebrate the International Day of the girl child and one week action against violence against women coming up in October.

She noted that the project carried out by the participants will be done by them and for them but they will be trained to run an effective advocacy campaign.

In her words, the Programme Manager of YWCA, Lagos state, Dr, Olatunkumbo Oseni said that she is committed toward raising and empowering women with relevant information and education that is needed for them to be a voice for change within their community.

“I dream of a more confident, caring, compassionate and courageous women who will rise and take action for a just, equitable and peaceful society”, she said.
