Drug peddler gets 10 months

court

Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, yesterday sentenced a 21-year-old drug peddler, Femi Oyelami, to 10 months’ imprisonment for trafficking in 1.1 kg of Indian hemp.

He said he sentenced Oyelami based on the evidence before him and the fact that he pleaded guilty.

The judge ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Oyo State Command, to destroy the harmful weed found with the convict.

Mr. Raphael Himinkaiye, counsel to the NDLEA, had told the court that the convict faced a one-count charge bordering on unlawful dealing in Indian hemp.

Himinkaiye said Oyelami committed the crime on January 23 at Total filling station, Ojoo, Ibadan.

He added that when the operatives of NDLEA apprehended the convict, he was found to be carrying a bag containing 1.1 kg of the illicit drug.

According to the prosecutor, the offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Oyelami, a father of one, had pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.

He said he was a barber, adding that his parents had died.
