Lagos to begin embedded power project in July

The Lagos State government yesterday said it would commence the embedded power supply project in July.

The power programme, a brain child of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration, is targeted at generating 3,000 megawatts (MW) electricity in the next three to five years.

Commissioner for Energy Mr. Olawale Oluwo, who spoke at the annual ministerial media briefing to mark the third anniversary of Ambode’s administration in Alausa, Ikeja, said the project would begin the journey to deregulate the power sector and achieve energy security for the state.

Oluwo said: “Our Power Reform Programme, which is the Embedded Power Project – all things being equal – will take off in July. The House of Assembly passed the law in January and the governor assented to the bill into law in February.

“The Implementation Committee is already working and a lot of work has been going on in the field and everywhere. We would do our Expression of Interest sometime in June and that process will kick-start this project.”

He said the 13 locations for the pilot phase was awaiting the approval of the State Executive Council (Exco).

Oluwo said the power and gas sectors reforms were key interventions of the administration to correct the challenges in the power sector and position the state for 24-hour power supply.
