11 die in Katsina accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State has confirmed the death of 11 persons in Sunday’s accident.

Sector Commander Godwin Ngueku, who confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday, said a Peugeot Saloon Car carrying the victims had a head-on collision with a tipper truck on the Katsina-Niger Republic highway.

He said: “The accident happened about 8pm on the Katsina-Niger Republic international road. All the occupants of the car died immediately.

“The bodies were evacuated to the Katsina General Hospital mortuary at 9pm on Sunday evening and the relatives have been picking them for burial.”

Ngueku appealed to parents to caution their children against reckless drinking and driving.

Ten persons have died following the outbreak of cholera in Bida, Niger State.

Secretary of Bida Local Government Area, Suleiman Sheshi, said 60 cases were recorded at the Umaru Sanda General Hospital in Bida.

He added that some health centres have also have patients.

Sheshi, however, lamented that there was only one medical doctor on call at the General Hospital when he visited, noting that the hospital also lacked medical consumables and adequate facilities to carter for the present health challenge.

The secretary appealed for government’s intervention, saying the council cannot handle the situation alone.
