19 Kaduna council chairs sworn in

Chairmen of 19 local government areas in Kaduna State will be sworn in today.

Caretaker committees were appointed for four councils where elections were inconclusive or subject to litigation.

A statement yesterday by Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s media aide, Samuel Aruwan, said the committees will serve pending the conclusion of consultations with the House of Assembly.

The statement reads: “Governor Nasir El-Rufai will swear-in chairmen of 19 local government councils tomorrow (today).

“The government congratulates the chairmen and looks forward to working with them to institutionalise a new paradigm of public service in the local government level.

“The government introduced electronic voting, at considerable public expense, to enhance election integrity at the local level. Despite this, people who did not want votes to count took deliberate actions to mar or prevent elections in four councils and so there is ongoing litigation on some of the results while elections did not hold at all in Kaura.

“A vacuum in local governance cannot be permitted while these issues are being addressed and so pending the conclusion of consultations with the House of Assembly on the necessary legislative actions to take, the government is appointing caretaker committees to handle the affairs of Chikun, Jaba, Kajuru and Kaura councils.”
