Kano-Abuja road project will create over 3,000 jobs – Minister

The Minister of State for Power Works and Housing II, Surv Hassan Zarma has said execution of the Kano-Abuja road project will create over 3,000 jobs in the next three years.

Zarma disclosed that aside from direct labour, it is expected to create indirect jobs across the project-chain.

The Minister who spoke to The Nation in Kano emphasised that the Federal Government is prepared to ensure consistent funding until it’s final delivery.

According to him, the contractor has been fully mobilized to commence work at the three Sections intermittently, adding that government is committed to fix infrastructure deficits in the country.

“In terms of employment, there are direct and indirect employment as well as the auxiliaries including dependents on those that will be earning from this project. So, finding a figure won’t be appropriate but I want to believe more than 3000 persons will be employed on this project,” he said.

The 375.4km road project was awarded to Julius Berger Plc at N155,470,626,078.07 with 36 months completion period.

Julius Berger Plc liason person, Mr. Kola Balogun, in his remarks gave assurance over the project completion as long as there is continuous funding.

He said the firm was already implementing the local content policy as Nigerians are largely executing the project, adding that adequate funding remains a critical factor in project execution in the country.

“If we are funded adequately, we will be able to complete the project even before time.”

In order to prevent heavy traffic, Balogun said alternative routes would be created for the commuters.
