ICRC Debunks Negotiation report on abducted persons

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday denied reports of its involvement in negotiation roles for the release of abducted girls.

The humanitarian body said the function was clearly outside its duties.

According to a statement issued by the ICRC Communication Coordinator, Aleksandra Matijevic, in Abuja ICRC remains a neutral support organization but always willing to help transport home people released by armed groups.

It reads in part: “Recent media articles have suggested that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) helps negotiate the release of abducted persons, which is incorrect.

“As a neutral humanitarian organization, the ICRC cannot play such a role, which would be contrary to our principle of neutrality and is outside our mandate. We however stand ready to help facilitate the transport home of people released by an armed opposition group, if requested so by the parties involved. “To help alleviate the suffering of people affected by armed conflict, we regularly exchange information with organisations and individuals engaged in humanitarian work.

“This is essential to ensure we can best understand and respond to people’s needs.”
