House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, has urged the newly-inducted fellows of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) to use their new status in serving humanity.
He made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the 2018 NIM Luncheon and Awards on Thursday in Lagos.
NAN reports that a total of 1,165 NIM fellows were inducted during the ceremony.
Dogara told the new fellows to see their elevation as a testimony of their commitment as well as sincerity of purpose in their professions.
“I want to congratulate the awardees for being recognised and being found worthy recipients of these awards.
“The award is to motivate them and I advice them not be deterred in helping humanity, ” the speaker said.
Dogara also urged those in positions of authority to be dedicated in the discharge of their services and responsibilities.
Earlier, NIM President, Prof. Olukunle Iyanda, said the tradition of upgrading members to fellows started in February 1963 when three fellows of the institute were inducted.
According to him, attaining the position of fellowship in the institute is a great achievement.
He said that fellowship was not an end in itself, adding that it imposed additional responsibilities on the recipients and raised the level of the expectations of the society.
“We need men and women who appreciate and accept the self-imposed limitations of responsible leadership.
“People who are committed to and imbued with integrity and concern for the wellbeing of the society in general rather than obsession with their own personal ambition and self – aggrandisement,” Iyanda said.
He appealed to the newly inducted fellows to increase their interest, service and commitment to the institute.
In his presentation, retired Commodore Abimbola Ayuba urged leaders to aim at examining the dynamics of changing paradigms on leadership with a view to suggesting the way forward.
One of the newly inducted fellow of the institute, Prof. Kola Adeyemo, said there was hope for Nigeria to get credible leaders through sound management.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Cross River, Dr Ihort Achu is among the new fellow of the institute. (NAN)
