Fafunwa Foundation hailed for role in education

The Fafunwa Education Foundation (FEF) has been hailed for contributing to educational development.

A Professor of Measurement and Evaluation, Institute of Education, University of Benin, Prof. Omaze Anthony Afemikhe, said yesterday at the Second National Conference organised by FEF at the University of Lagos, (UNILAG), Akoka, Yaba that the foundation had contributed a lot to the development of the education sector.

FEF was initiated by former Minister of Education and Youth Development Prof. Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa.

Afemikhe, who spoke on the theme: “Nigeria’s basic education: How functional?, said the government and individuals had a lot to do to make basic education functional.

He said: ‘Since no country can develop without having a vibrant education sector, the government and individuals have a lot to do to re-position basic education and make it functional.”

Afemikhe said the country needed an education system that de-emphasised formal structured, examination-oriented curriculum, for a more holistic and functional education that emphasised flexibility, creativity, initiative, industry, dexterity and usefulness to the society.

Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Executive Secretary Dr. Hamid Bobboyi described the conference theme as timely and of great interest.

He praised the late Fafunwa for his contributions to educational development.

UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said the late Fafunwa was a colossus, who had a desire for teaching and learning in Nigerian languages.

He said the conference’s theme was apt because it was what the late Fafunwa reiterated in his life.
