The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has conducted assessment examination for 903 foreign-trained medical and dental graduates.
The examination was conducted using the software of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
The Registrar, MDCN, Tajudeen Sanusi, who spoke with reporters at the headquarters of JAMB in Abuja after the assessment examination, said it is a global practice to assess foreign trained doctors and dentists before they can be issued license to practice in a country.
He said: “It’s an assessment examination for the foreign trained dental and medical graduates. We have about 903 on the whole.
“It’s a global practice that if you train in a jurisdiction other than yours, when you go to another jurisdiction they will want to asses your level of competence so that you can be licensed to practice.
“Meaning that those of us that we’re trained in Nigeria if we decide to go to Ghana, we will have to seat for their exam and pass their exams before we can be licensed to practice.”
He said only registered medical doctors and dentists on its list are allowed to practice.
Mr. Sanusi, who said it was regrettable that the country didn’t have enough medical personnel, added that the council would not trade quality medical doctors and dentists for quantity.
He commended the smooth conduct of the exam by jamb.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said it was the responsibility of the board to provide a means for agencies seeking credible examination.
Prof. Oloyede, who was represented by the agency’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said: “Ours is just to provide a vehicle for agencies that want credible examination. We provide a transparent platform, we give equal opportunity for every candidate to ensure that at least he does his best and the results are released promptly.
“We have this capacity and we are calling on other organisations that want to also partner with us to conduct either their promotion exams, recruitment or professional examinations, to come and make use of our platform.
“It is not about the cost or anything. It’s all about credibility and making sure that Nigeria stands out.”
