Pupil dies in Makurdi road accident

A primary school pupil, Aondowase Nyitamen, died yesterday in a road accident at Heavy Duty Park, North Bank, Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Two others were injured.

The Investigating Police Officer (IPO) attached to “C” Division Police Station at North Bank, Sergeant Thaddeus Dangela, told The Nation on phone that a truck, with registration number YDP 697 XA conveying beans was travelling towards Makurdi when it fell off the road and its load trapped the victims.

Aondowase was a primary two pupil at LGEA Primary School, Locust, North Bank.

His mother, Mrs Mlumun Nyitamen, and a primary three pupil in the same school, Queen Torkuma, were injured.

Dangela said the remains of Master Aondowase had been deposited at the morgue of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi while the truck had been towed to the “C” Division Police Station in North Bank with the driver allegedly on the run.

The police officer said an unregistered tanker allegedly overtook the truck and forced it off the road. This, he said, forced the truck to run into a ditch before summersaulting.

Public-spirited residents rescued some of the victims from the wreckage.

A Lexus 300 with registration number VDY 562 AA, which was parked on the scene of the incident, was damaged.

The Special Assistant (SA) to the Benue State Governor on Media, Mr. Geoffrey Jimin, who was on his way to drop his children in school, conveyed the injured to the Emergency Unit of the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi, where they are currently receiving treatment.
