Ekiti deputy speaker urges INEC to be neutral

Ekiti State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Olusegun Adewumi has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality as Nigerians prepare for the general elections next month.

In his New Year message to Ekiti residents by his Media Assistant Charles Akinola, the deputy speaker described 2019 as a deciding year for the country.

The lawmaker stressed that the integrity of the polls should not be tainted by INEC and politicians.

He added that the presidential election, which will hold next month, is a litmus test for the capacity and readiness of Nigerians to deepen democratic conducts and good governance.

Adewumi said: “The elite must show commitment to democratic ethos by allowing the people to freely bestow whomever they desire, while citizens must also prove that popular sovereignty rests in them by resisting vote-buying and other monetisation of the electoral process that could submerge their will.”
