The Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria has impressed on prospect advertisers the need to observe decorum in the design of campaign communications.
In a statement issued by the Agency said, “Sponsors of political campaign advertisements in the various media – billboards, posters, gantries, radio, television, newspapers, online platforms, etc, that it is unlawful to expose/broadcast any advertisement which do not have the approval of the Advertising Standards Panel, ASP.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the purpose of the pre-exposure approval by the ASP is to prevent exposure to the public of advertisements which may misinform, mislead or offend the public, disparage or malign competitors or provoke unwholesome consequences such as violent conflicts.”
Extant regulations require that, political campaign advertisements are focused on issues and devoid of attack on personalities or disparaging references to opponents, and in any case, vetted and approved by the ASP as guarantee that they satisfy regulatory requirements. Advertisers/sponsors of political campaign adverts are advised to contact APCON through any of its offices across Nigeria to seek ASP vetting approval for their advertisements before exposing them in any medium.
