The Chairman of Abia State Election Petitions Tribunal, Justice M. B. Wakili, has warned counsels against undue delay in the presentation of cases.
Wakili said the delay could come through unnecessary applications for adjournments, stressing that litigants needs to proceed to a higher tribunal in good time.
Speaking in Umuahia during its inaugural sitting, Wakili urged counsels and parties to explore the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as a means of settling their disputes.
“We must dispense justice without fear or favour, position or standing.
“We urge you all to note that the task before us is enormous, we implore you to exhibit due diligence and professionalism in the discharge of your duties.
“Please be informed that 30 petitions were filed, which cut across the National and State Houses of Assembly and all interlocutory applications; objections would be considered at the final decision of the tribunal,” Wakili said.
The Tribunal granted the request of former Governor and the Progressive Peoples Party (PPA) candidate for Abia North senatorial zone, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, to inspect election materials.
The chairman urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the petitioner inspect the election documents and to serve the first respondent, Mao Ohuabunwa, through substituted means.
In granting the prayer, Wakili said the inspection will include ballot papers and result sheets.
The tribunal said the service to the respondents by substituted means would be done within seven days from the day of service and adjourned the matter to May 15.
The tribunal also granted the prayer of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Abia North senatorial zone, David Ogba Onuoha, to serve Mao Ohuabunwa by substituted service.
Counsel to the petitioners, Chidozie Ogunji said he would expedite the service within the stipulated time.
