Acute drinking water shortage hits Ringim

cute drinking water has hit Ringim town in Ringim Local Government in Jigawa State, The Nation can report.

Reports from the state indicate that the areas experiencing difficulty of accessing portable drinking water include Ringim old town, Tsigi, Galadanci, Hurumi, Nasarawa and Tsallaken Dogo.

The communities have thus called on the state government to rescue them from the situation, which is threatening the health of the inhabitants.

The communities made the call in a press statement issued under the agies of Ringim Youth Club and made available to The Nation in Dutse, the state capital. It said the Ringim metropolitan is in critical condition despite the huge amount approved by state government for the town’s water project.

According to the statement, the state government sometime last year awarded the Ringim Water ?Project at the cost of N137million to Marble Engineering and Multi-Service Limited, “but still, so many areas in the town are still having serious water problem.”

They also appealed to the state government to, without further delay, look into the matter in order to prevent any outbreak of water-borne diseases in the affected areas.

When contacted, Engineer Adamu Abdullahi, Managing Director of Marble Engineering and Multi-Service Limited, the company handling the water project contract, said it is handling the project of specific areas, mostly new settlements.

Abdullahi explained that the contract was awarded for the renovation of four water pump stations, which includes Pores Try, Legal, Railway and main pump station in Galadanci quarters and the construction of two new ones, Jumbo and Shagari water pump plans.

He said project supervised ?by the House Committee on Water Resources, Water Board is about 95% completed.

He maintained that “the areas in question are not part of the contract project awarded to us” and attributed the worsening situation in the affected areas to the damaging of the towns’ pipe-line during the township road project executed by the previous administration.
