Hon. Kayode Moshood Akiolu, Member, Federal House of Representatives, representing Lagos Island Federal Constituency II, has assured members of his constituency of improved standards of living and wellbeing, stressing that this is in keeping with his campaign promises.

The lawmaker gave this assurance during the donation of laptops and commissioning of fully equipped six new blocks of classrooms at the Girls Senior Academy and additional three blocks at St. Stephens School, recently, both on Lagos Island.

Akiolu, who recalled that part of his campaign promises was to adopt a welfarist approach to governance with education, Information and Communication Technology, youths and women empowerment at the core, said it was heartening to note that he has been able to achieve some modest success in that regard.

While noting that his commitment to the educational attainment of his constituents is in line with his campaign promises, he emphasised that without education no man can lead a successful life.

The prince, who said the newly built schools were part of his constituency projects, said his expectations from the teachers and students is that whatever is given to them should be judiciously used to the optimum level to enhance their ability. “That would be an encouragement for us to go back to the national level and request for further dividends of democracy for our people. For the students, I want Lagos Island in particular to be an ICT hub, not just a place to sell ICT equipment and all. We want to have technicians, want this place to be a Silicon Valley and hub. I pray for the students that learn from the school.”

Akiolu, who said India is one of the countries with the best hi-tech, prayed that in the next 10 years Lagos island in particular will be a hub of technology innovation.

Also speaking on the occasion, Mr. Oyebanji Samuel who represented the Director-General of Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Dr. (Mrs) Jumai Adamu Funtua lauded the lawmaker’s gestures towards the pursuit of teaching and learning within his constituents.

Speaking separately, the trio of Hon. Jide Damazio, Chairman Elders’ Forum, Lagos State, Mr. Sanni Sule of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Dr. Idowu Olufunke Oyetola, Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Education District III, thanked Akiolu for the good gestures especially for ploughing back to the society, noting that the best legacy anyone can bequeath to the children is qualitative education which prepares them for the future ahead.

While unveiling the projects, Akiolu said he decided to name the projects in honour of the late Senator Demola Seriki in recognition of his sterling leadership qualities.

The lawmaker, who requested a minute of silence for the deceased, described Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain as an icon and his political mentor whose legacies would outlive him.

The lawmaker while handing over the keys to the school managers in company of the son of the deceased, Hon. Wale Seriki, Secretary to the Local Govt. Lagos Island East LCDA, hoped that the authorities would put the facilities to judicious use.

An emotion-laden Seriki, while expressing gratitude to the lawmaker and others for honouring the memory of his late father, said he would keep up the legacies of his father.
