Alternative artists need more radio support, says Ibejii

Headies Award Best Alternative album winner, Ibejii has said that alternative artists need more radio airplay and support to help the genre of music gain more recognition.

The Afro-soul artist made this known to The Nation in a recent chat in Atlanta, United States while speaking about how much recognition is given to alternative music acts in the music space.

“For an alternative music artist, you know we never get recognised, so to be recognised on a stage like this and at Headies global show, it is an amazing thing. So it’s changing, five years ago it was a struggle to get 200 people at a show but now we can get more people in shows and that’s because more Nigerians want variety in their music taste in Nigeria, in the way that they want anywhere in the world. All we need now is radio support, when the radio starts playing alternative sound in the evenings things will change but the market is growing,” he said.

On what is next for him, Ibejii said: “Ibejii is going to continue doing what he has always done, I have a new project coming out early February next year ‘Yellow Vanilla’ and we are very excited about it, it is my first strictly love project.”
