All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State won the 462 seats across 30 local governments, 32 local council development areas and seven area councils during last Saturday’s local government election.
The poll, conducted by Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), which was opposed in court by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), witnessed low turnout. Governor Adegboyega Oyetola hailed the process.
OSIEC Chairman Segun Oladitan, speaking at the commission’s office in Osogbo yesterday, said at the close of deadline given for withdrawal of candidates, only one party, APC, obtained and submitted nomination forms for screening on behalf of its candidates in the local governments, local council development areas and area councils.

He said some people held divergent views about the ballot paper of the election carrying only ‘Yes or No’ on it, explaining that “the Electoral Act 2022 Section 106(1) A & B states that a candidate for an election to the office of the chairman shall be deemed to have been duly elected to the office where being the only candidate nominated for the election, he or she has majority of YES votes over NO votes cast at the election and not less than one-third of the votes cast at the election in each of at least two-thirds of
all the wards in the Area Council”.
Oladitan presented certificates of return to the 69 chairmen and 393 councillors after declaring them winners of the election.
PDP, through its Chairman, Adekunle Akindele, has said “impeachment threat on Osun governor-elect Ademola Adeleke can’t stop legal disbandment of the local government executives.”
He said: “The councils will be legally disbanded as soon as the new administration takes over the state.”
