Imo State yesterday produced its first All Progressives Congress (APC) senator-elect from the Southeast in Mr. Ben Uwajimogu.
Uwajimogu won the Imo North senatorial re-run election with 56,076 votes ahead of his closest rival, Peoples Democratic Party’s Chief Athan Achonu, who polled 43,815 votes following the final round of voting on Thursday.
The winner was declared by the Returning Officer, Professor Arinze Agbaogu, at the central collation centre in Okigwe Local Government Headquarters early yesterday.
He said the result was the total votes scored by both candidates in the July 23 and 28 exercises.
Uwajumogu had scored 48,921 on July 23, while Achonu of the PDP scored 40, 142 votes.
INEC, however, declared that particular rerun inconclusive on account of some discrepancies.
The APC candidate in the Oru East State constituency, Nkenna Nzeruo and that of Isiala Mbano, Chiji Collins also won their re-run elections into the state house of assembly following the conclusion of voting on Thursday.
Uwajumogu told journalists in Owerri that he was highly elated over the victory, adding “my gratitude goes more to Governor Rochas Okorocha whose structure helped me to win this senatorial election.’’
