Appeal Court affirms Olaoye as Soun of Ogbomoso

Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye

The Court of Appeal in Ibadan, Oyo State, has dismissed the judgment of a High Court nullifying the selection and installation of Afolabi Olaoye as the Soun of Ogbomoso.

Yesterday, the appellate court ruled that the lower court had no jurisdiction to entertain the case.

In October 2023, the High Court in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, nullified the selection and installation of Afolabi as the new Soun of Ogbomoso.

K. A. Adedokun, the presiding judge, ruled that the nomination of Olaoye did not comply with legal provisions for selection of Soun.

The suit was filed by Kabir Olaoye, one of the contenders to the stool, and six others.

In September 2023, Olaoye, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), was installed as the new Soun of Ogbomoso.

He was installed by kingmakers led by Sobalaje Otolorin at the palace.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved the installation of Olaoye as the Soun. However, some members of the royal family opposed the installation.

The three-member panel led by Yargata Nimpar ruled that the respondents failed to comply with the administrative procedure of writing to the government about their dissatisfaction with the selection before approaching the lower court.

The court ruled in favour of Olaoye on all the 10 grounds of appeal.
