Osun State Police Commissioner Fimihan Adeoye has said the arrest of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Fatai Diekola, has no political undertone.
Addressing reporters yesterday at Ila-Orangun, Adeoye said the arrest was part of the responsibilities of the police to ensure peace and stability across the state.
He said nobody, not even Governor Rauf Aregbesola, gave an order to arrest anyone, as being insinuated in some quarters.
Diekola was arrested on Monday with five others for alleged political violence before last Saturday’s Osun West senatorial by-election.
It was learnt Diekola honoured the police invitation two weeks after the command invited him for interrogation.
This reportedly led to his arrest on Monday when he showed up at the police command in Osogbo, the state capital.
Diekola, who stormed the state police headquarters with his loyalists, was arrested and detailed for constituting public nuisance.
The APC chieftain was charged with public disturbance and breach of peace.
Adeoye insisted that the arrest of the suspects was devoid of political undertone.
The police chief said Diekola and the others were arrested on the basis of facts gathered by the command on the suspects.
He added that the arrest was in accordance with the law.
