Artist’s car plunges into river

Graphic Artist  Durojaiye Babayemi, narrowly escaped death on Monday, when his vehicle, a red Volkswagen saloon car somersaulted and plunged into the Majidun River between Itowolo and Asolo Bus Stop, Ikorodu.

The accident occurred  about 8am.

Babayemi said he was on his way to submit his daughter’s admission documents to the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, when the accident happened.

“I was trying to avoid an Ikorodu-bound Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus which was trying to re-enter the BRT lane when I lost control. My vehicle hit the kerb and somersaulted before landing in the river.

“I left my house around 7:30am to submit my child’s admission letter in LASPOTECH, Ikorodu. As I got past Majidun, a BRT was by my right and I was on the left; then I saw a symbol of BRT Lane so I decided to give way so that the BRT can go. As I tried to turn, the tyre  hit the road demarcation, threw me up, summersaulted and landed in a river. Fortunately, the part of the river I landed was close to the land, so I was able to swim out myself. I managed to remove the seat belt, open the door and got out.

“While the car was summersaulting, my heart just remained intact. When I came out, people had rushed towards me to pull me out. It was divine intervention that I was alive.”
