The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, has awarded scholarships worth N1.1 million to 11 indigent students of the institution for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The initiative, aimed at supporting underprivileged students, helping them stay focused, and boosting academic performance, followed a rigorous selection process.
Over 100 students applied, but only 11 were selected after screening and interviews conducted by the committee.
Under the scholarship scheme, Two students received N200,000 on behalf of the National ASUU.
Five students were awarded N100,000 each by the University of Ibadan Branch (ASUU-UI).
Four students received N50,000 each, donated by Professor Tajudeen Akanji, a member of the ASUU-UI branch, in support of the Union’s efforts.
Speaking on the gesture, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, Chairman of ASUU, UI Chapter, said the Union remains committed to the future of brilliant Nigerian youths.
He emphasised that, despite the Union’s ongoing challenges—including delayed salaries and the federal government’s hesitation to sign a new agreement—education must not be denied to promising students due to financial constraints.
According to Dr Afolabi, “ASUU sees investing in the future of indigent students as a way of inculcating the values of support and empathy in the beneficiaries so that they will give back to society in the future.”
While presenting some of the awards, the Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan, Professor Abiodun Olaniran, represented by Chairman, ASUU LAUTECH, Olujimi Dada, maintained that the Union is selfless and not selfish in the pursuit of her members’ welfare alone.
He advised members of ASUU not to be tired of putting pressure on the government to do the needful to improve their welfare and the conditions of learning across all public universities.
The presentation of the Scholarship Award to selected Students of the University of Ibadan, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, took place at the Union’s Secretariat, Olajuwon Olayide Extension, Ajibode.
Among the beneficiaries are: Omotola Bello (Pharmacy), Alan Success Opeyemi (Economics), Moshood Opeyemi (Medicine and Surgery), Adegoke Adeseun Oladayo (Medicine and Surgery), Ogunlowo Tayo (Pharmacy), Bello Ayomide (Medicine and Surgery) and Adewumi Mary (Nursing), among others
