Oloworo of Oworoshoki felicitates residents, prays for Renewed Hope in 2026

The Oloworo of Oworoshoki, His Royal Majesty, Oba Babatunde Saliu, Elebo II, has extended warm New Year felicitations to the people of Oworoshoki community and Lagos State at large as they step into the year 2026.

In his New Year message, the revered monarch expressed gratitude to God for the gift of life and preservation through the outgoing year, noting that the grace of God has remained sufficient for the people despite the economic and social challenges experienced in recent times.

Oba Saliu prayed that 2026 will usher in a season of divine grace, peace, good health, prosperity and uncommon breakthroughs for residents of Oworoshoki, Lagos State, and Nigeria as a whole.

He called on God to bless families, strengthen businesses, protect the youths, and grant elders long life and sound mind.

The traditional ruler urged residents to remain hopeful, law-abiding and united, stressing that development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and cooperation.

He encouraged the people to continue to support government policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

The Oloworo specifically called on residents to believe in the Lagos State Government and the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms and infrastructural development would yield positive results for the state and the nation in the new year.

According to the monarch, “With patience, prayers and collective support for constituted authorities, Nigeria will witness greater progress and stability. The future is bright, and together we shall overcome our challenges.”

Oba Babatunde Saliu, Elebo II, further prayed for continued peace in Oworoshoki land, wisdom for leaders at all levels, and God’s protection over Lagos State and Nigeria throughout the year 2026 and beyond.

CAN backs FG’s tax reform policy

    … calls for fairness, restraint

… urges govt to tackle insecurity

Following the commencement of the tax reform policy, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Thursday advised the federal government to ensure wisdom, fairness, and restraint.

Economic decisions, CAN said must not, “deepen hardship for those already struggling”.

CAN president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh in his new year message, advised that, “Small businesses, low-income earners, and rural communities require protection and deliberate support if recovery is to be meaningful and inclusive.”

Okoh pleaded with government to continue to tackle insecurity and reduce it to the bearest minimum.

He said, “We acknowledge God’s mercy in preserving lives and sustaining our nation through another year marked by serious trials and testing moments.

“The year behind us was a difficult one for many Nigerians. Economic hardship, rising living costs, insecurity, and uncertainty placed enormous strain on families and communities. These realities cannot be ignored or explained away. The quiet endurance of our people is not a sign that all is well; rather, it is a reminder of how much healing, relief, and justice our nation still needs.

“As fiscal, tax, and other policy reforms continue, CAN calls for wisdom, fairness, and restraint. As the nation continues to speak about reforms, recovery, and growth, CAN affirms that progress must translate into lived realities. Economic advancement must be evident in the daily lives of citizens—when food is affordable, healthcare is accessible, education is attainable, and meaningful work is available. Development that does not touch ordinary lives remains incomplete.

“Nigeria must become a place where families live with dignity, young people can plan for the future with confidence, and communities are no longer overwhelmed by fear. Public policies and leadership decisions must consistently reflect compassion, responsibility, and a genuine commitment to the common good, especially towards the poor and the vulnerable.

“The persistence of insecurity across the country remains a grave national concern. Terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and violent crime have uprooted communities and shattered lives. This reality demands decisive and sustained action. We hope that the government will deliver on its promises to reduce insecurity to the lowest levels in this new year.

“Furthermore, government at all levels must urgently present a clear, comprehensive, and time-bound plan for the resettlement of communities displaced for prolonged periods by violence and insecurity. It is unjust and unacceptable that citizens should remain indefinitely uprooted from their ancestral lands, homes, and livelihoods. Beyond temporary relief, the nation must pursue restoration. Security must be guaranteed, homes and infrastructure rebuilt, and displaced persons enabled to return safely and with dignity. A nation cannot claim healing while entire communities remain unsettled.

Okoh went further that Nigeria’s challenges are not only economic or structural, but also moral, adding that corruption, injustice, and division continue to weaken trust and erode national conscience.

He said urged that leadership at all levels must be guided by integrity, accountability, and a sincere commitment to serve rather than dominate.

“National renewal requires moral courage as much as technical competence. As the Church, we reaffirm our commitment to stand with the people, to speak truth with love, and to uphold hope in difficult times. We declare that Nigeria is not without a future. We affirm that justice, peace, and restoration are possible when leadership is responsible and citizens remain committed to righteousness and unity. As we journey through 2026, we look forward with sober hope, trusting that our nation can yet rise into better days marked by healing, stability, and shared progress”, Okoh added.

Tinubu hails Eze Ikonne at 97, 52 years on throne

    …celebrates Aba monarch’s enduring reign

…salutes role as custodian of culture, unity and peace

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated His Majesty Eze Isaac Ikonne, Enyi I of Aba, on his 97th birthday and the 52nd anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President extolled the long-reigning monarch’s decades of service to his people and the nation, describing him as a symbol of stability and continuity in traditional leadership.

President Tinubu noted that Eze Ikonne, a former chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, has remained a respected voice of wisdom and moderation throughout his reign, contributing significantly to peace and social cohesion in his domain and beyond.

Saluting the first-class monarch, the President said Eze Ikonne is “not only the custodian of the culture and traditions of the people of Aba but also an anchor for peace, unity, and progress in the nation.”

The President also acknowledged the monarch’s family, noting that Eze Ikonne is the father of Prince Paul Ikonne, a former chief executive of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority.

President Tinubu joined the Ikonne family, as well as the people and government of Abia State, in celebrating the traditional ruler on the dual milestone, praying for his continued strength and longevity.

  • JUST IN: Maresca leaves Chelsea after poor run of form in December

JUST IN: Maresca leaves Chelsea after poor run of form in December

Enzo Maresca has left his role as Chelsea manager with the club sitting fifth in the Premier League.

The Italian, 45, departs less than six months after winning the Club World Cup at the end of his first season at Stamford Bridge.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track,” Chelsea said.

The Blues have won just one of their past seven league matches and took only six points from six games in December to fall 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

But results are only a small part of the story.

Maresca, who had a contract due to run to 2029, delighted key figures at Stamford Bridge – including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, and influential co-owner Behdad Eghbali – by steering Chelsea to a top-four finish and winning the Uefa Conference League and Club World Cup last year.

Yet success soon turned to sourness in his relationship with the hierarchy.

Maresca stunned even members of his own staff when – after beating Everton 2-0 for Chelsea‘s solitary Premier League win in December – he said “many people” had made it his “worst 48 hours” since joining the club.

The former Leicester manager has also switched agents – from the Wasserman agency to Jorge Mendes – and has been talked of as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, which Maresca has dismissed.

  • Federal Civil Service completes historic shift to digital operations

Federal Civil Service completes historic shift to digital operations

Nigeria’s Federal Civil Service has officially completed its transition to a fully paperless system, a historic milestone in public sector reform.

‎The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoS), Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced on Wednesday that all 38 federal Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments (MEMDs) became paperless at the close of business on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, in line with presidential and administrative directives.

‎Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Walson-Jack described the achievement as a major step toward a modern, accountable, and digitally enabled civil service.

‎She noted that the reform builds on a multi-year digitalisation journey that began in 2017 under the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP), which introduced the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system.

‎The initiative was expanded under FCSSIP 2021–2025, focusing on digital workflows, decision tracking, and service delivery.

‎When she assumed office in August 2024, only three MEMDs had partial paperless operations.

‎That number has now risen to 38, including 33 ministries and five key extra-ministerial departments, such as the State House, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service, the Federal Civil Service Commission, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

‎A significant part of the reform was the expansion of official government email accounts.

‎Walson-Jack revealed that fewer than 20,000 email addresses existed for civil servants in August 2024. Today, over 100,000 GovMail accounts have been issued, enabling secure, auditable communication across the service and saving billions of naira annually.

‎The HoS also announced that all MEMDs will no longer accept paper submissions through physical registries. Citizens can now submit scanned documents via email and track their correspondence using the newly launched Federal Civil Service Paperless Portal.

‎“This milestone ensures faster response times, better transparency, and a more reliable audit trail for government correspondenc. This reform aligns with Nigeria’s national development priorities and global best practices,” she said.

‎Walson-Jack commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, for ensuring whole-of-government alignment. She also recognised ministers, permanent secretaries, civil servants, and key partners, including the National Information Technology Development Agency and Galaxy Backbone Limited, for their roles in achieving the December 31 deadline.

‎She expressed confidence that the Office of the Head of the Civil Service will sustain the reform through ongoing training, post-implementation optimisation, compliance monitoring, and cybersecurity enhancement, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Oba Ewuare II: Edo PDP chieftains disown social critic

Two members of the State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State have dissociated themselves from a social media critic, Albert Obazee, following comments attributed to him about the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II.

The party officials are the Edo PDP Organising Secretary, Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, and the Publicity Secretary, Daniel Osa-Ogbegie.

In a statement, Osa-Ogbegie said he was distancing himself from any posts, comments or narratives considered malicious, disparaging, disrespectful or irreverent towards the Benin Monarch, the Benin Kingdom, or anything regarded as sacred, historical, cultural or institutional to Benin.

He urged members of the public to refrain from tagging, sending, associating or linking his name, image or platform with such content, either directly or indirectly.

Osa-Ogbegie described himself as a proud son of Benin, noting that he remains bound by history, identity and conscience to the Benin Kingdom.

He added that his commitment to Benin remains unwavering, stressing his deep respect and reverence for all that is connected to the Kingdom and its rich heritage.

“My loyalty is, and shall always remain, to the Oba of Benin, who stands as the living personification of Edo in all its glory, dignity, continuity, and civilisation. Any attempt to suggest otherwise, or to drag my name into narratives hostile to the Benin throne or institution, is false, misleading, and unacceptable and would be treated as an act of war.

“Let this serve as a clear notice to all concerned. Respect for Benin and the Oba of Benin is non-negotiable.”

Ifaluyi-Isibor advised Obazee to be more circumspect in his words.

He said Obazee would now be measured by his utterances even as he cautioned him to apply more decorum even when expressing anger.

“I watched a snippet from his video where some unsavory comments were made and I think it was utterly wrong and unnecessary to make such comments at anyone much less the Monarch. We will hold our Monarch in high esteem and treat the throne with the respect it deserves. This is not optional.”

Why I avoid road trips in Nigeria – Shaffy Bello

Nollywood actress Shaffy Bello has said she prefers air and water transportation to road travel in Nigeria, citing concerns about infrastructure and security.

In a recent interview with VJ Adams, Bello explained that she avoids road trips in the country, especially journeys beyond the Lagos–Ibadan axis, due to the condition of roads and the challenges associated with long-distance travel.

According to her, the situation has affected her social life, as it limits her ability to attend events or visit people who are not very close to her.

The actress noted that her travel choices are largely influenced by safety and convenience, adding that these factors play a major role in how she navigates movement within the country.

“I prefer water and air transportation. I don’t like road trips. I can do road trips abroad but in Nigeria, no, thank you,” she said.

Bello added, “I can only consider road trips in Nigeria only if the person I am going to see is extremely dear to me. And everybody knows me now, they go, ‘Don’t invite her, she won’t come.’ Once it is farther than Ibadan, count me out”, she said.

  • I won’t dump Labour Party after Obi’s exit, says Otti

I won’t dump Labour Party after Obi’s exit, says Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured residents of the state and his supporters that he has no intention of defecting from the Labour Party (LP), despite reports linking the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, with a planned move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi defected to ADC on Wednesday, December 31,from Labour Party. He made his decision known in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

Speaking during the December edition of his monthly media chat with journalists at the State Banquet Hall, Government House, Umuahia, Governor Otti said Obi personally informed him of his decision before taking steps to leave the Labour Party for another platform.

The governor, however, made it clear that he remains committed to the Labour Party, stressing that he has no plans to exit the party that provided him the platform to become governor.

Otti explained that his decision to stay in the Labour Party is driven by his resolve to continue efforts aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the party.

According to him, leaving the party would only be considered if all attempts to redeem and reposition it fail.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and assured supporters that his focus remains on governance in Abia State and sustaining the political ideals that brought his administration to power.

“I joined Labour Party before Peter Obi. I didn’t join the Labour Party with him. He has communicated me that he was leaving Labour Party and I gave him my blessings, but I remain in Labour Party.

“I told him that I will have to continue the struggle to rescue Labour Party. That’s the party that brought me to power.

“If we fight and get to the end and we can’t retrieve Labour Party, then, we can now discuss options. But for now, I am not defecting with him.

Responding to the call by the Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urging him to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), Otti while dismissing Kalu said, “I want to thank the Deputy Speaker for heeding the call that I made in my Christmas message, calling on our people who have the means to extend consideration to the less privileged, particularly at this season. So, seeing that he heeded that call and distributed rice and some money to vulnerable people, I thank him.

“But then, I have also taken the principal decision not to dignify all the comments that he made with any response. I am sure that you know a man that they called Winston Churchill, he was a two time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and lived for 90 years. He was a profound thinker and writer. There was a comment that he made. He said that you will never get to your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.

“So, we remain focused on our job, we don’t want to be distracted, that will be my response.”

Responding to question on whether he has plans to run for the second tenure, Otti said, “I have also resisted the urge to begin to make predictions of what will happen in the future because I don’t have that anointing. But if God gives us life, it’s His Will that will be done, not man’s will.

“Let’s not speak when the Lord has not spoken. But we can always have our wish to say this is what we want to do, but at the end of the day, everything is in God’s hands.”

Giving a breakdown on what his administration has achieved over the last one month and also intended to do in the coming days, Gov. Otti disclosed that as part of the state government’s plans to ease off transportation stress from Abians, his administration would soon receive the delivery of more 20 electric buses, adding that another 60 of the buses were expected in the state to make up the number of the Electric Buses to 100, plying different routes in the state.

The governor also announced that the Umuahia bus terminal would be commissioned early January with construction work to begin in Aba bus terminal few months ahead.

While attributing the recent acquisitions of some of the moribun companies by the state government, Gov reinstated the commitment of his government to address the level of unemployment among the teeming youths in the state.

He added that work would soon resume at the Abia Mega City village as part of plans by the state to end medical tourism by Nigerians and exportation of health workers to the overseas.
