Reps minority caucus calls for suspension of new tax laws pending investigation

The minority caucus of the House of Representatives has called for the suspension of the implementation of four tax reform Acts passed by the National Assembly and signed by the President, pending the conclusion of investigations by the House.

The call followed controversies over alleged alterations to the laws as passed by the National Assembly.

The issue was raised as a matter of privilege at plenary by Abdulsamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto), who alleged that the tax laws gazetted and currently being circulated by the Ministry of Information differ from the versions passed by the legislature and assented to by the President.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minority leadership urged Nigerians to reject any tax law that does not bear the signatures of the President and the Clerk to the National Assembly, noting that these are the two mandatory signatories required to validate any law passed by the lawmakers.

The statement was signed by the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda; Minority Whip, Ali Isa J.C.; Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Sani Madaki; and Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi.

The statement read, “We have noted with great consternation and an overwhelming sense of disappointment the current storm brewing over the Tax Reform laws that were duly passed by the National Assembly and properly signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“Ordinarily, the controversy will have been dismissed as needless, but the gravity of the cause of the controversy is an issue of great concern to all Nigerians, especially since it borders on the accusations of unlawful alterations to the laws as passed by both Chambers of the National Assembly and subsequently signed by the President.

“We are also aware that this issue has been raised by a member of the House of Representatives during one of our recent plenaries, following which the House inaugurated a high-powered committee to investigate the allegations made by the member that the tax laws have been fraudulently altered,  gazetted and the altered copy circulated to the public.

“As such, we want to assure Nigerians that the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, will stand with the entire House to see that the circumstances surrounding this illegality is exposed and the culprits brought to book in the interest of justice for all Nigerians.

“We are aware of the legitimate procedures towards the gazetting of laws, and it starts with the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA) transmitting the actual copies of the laws to the relevant federal agency that gazettes all government documents, which means, the National Assembly is always the custodian of the genuine documents of the laws of the federation that have been passed, and, therefore, we will always make sure that it is the truth that prevails in moments of controversy such as this.

“We therefore call on Nigerians to disregard any purported tax laws being circulated without the signature of the CNA and the President and Commander in Chief, such did not originate from the National Assembly, and neither do they reflect the true character of what were actually passed by the Legislature and signed by the President.

“Any attempt to foist fake laws on Nigerians is an attack on the independence and constitutional role of the National Assembly in safeguarding our democracy, and the  caucus  will unconditionally protect the independence of the Legislature and our democracy.

“Consequently,  we call on the government to suspend the implementation  of the tax laws until investigations are concluded and there is clarity and certainty of the law to be implemented.

“Moreover, Nigerians and the business community are entitled to copies  of the laws that they are expected.”

The gang leader,  Patrick Essien Etim, 23, and his accomplice, Bassey Antiha Asuquo, 40, were apprehended at  a medical facility in Cross River State  while planning to kidnap another medical bigwig on December 27.

According to the source, the DSS had been tracking the  kidnap ring since Ephraim’s killing in July 2023, when gunmen posing as patients abducted her.

The duo confessed to the crime, admitting that they killed the professor  after collecting multiple ransom payments from her family.

The medical association had embarked on an indefinite strike, which crippled the health sector for over a week to prevail on government to rescue the Professor.

EPL: Wirtz gets his first goal as Liverpool beat Wolves

Florian Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal as they held out to beat Wolves on an emotional afternoon at Anfield as Diogo Jota was remembered by both sets of fans.

Arne Slot’s side scored twice in two minutes through Ryan Gravenberch and Wirtz in the first half and though Wolves pulled one back through Santiago Bueno, Liverpool made it three Premier League wins in a row. Wolves remain winless in the top flight this season.

Dinis and Duarte, Jota’s sons, were mascots for the game and came out on to the pitch alongside Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Jota, who played for Liverpool and Wolves, during his time in England, was remembered again when both sets of fans sang his song in the 20th minute. Liverpool retired his shirt number ’20’ following his death in a car crash in July.

Rob Edwards’ Wolves held firm for most of the first half until Gravenberch broke the deadlock in the 41st minute as he finished from Jeremie Frimpong’s ball.

A minute later, Wirtz got on the end of Hugo Ektike’s delivery and slotted past Jose Sa to double Liverpool’s lead.

The visitors had a glimmer of hope six minutes into the second half, as Bueno scored the rebound after Alisson saved Tolu Arokodare’s header from a Wolves corner.

Edwards made three changes just after the hour mark as his side hunted for an equaliser and they came close when Arokodare headed over but Liverpool held firm to make it seven games unbeaten in all competitions.

Delta monarchs to citizens: don’t expect govt to do everything for you

The Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof) Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has emphasised the importance of active participation from the citizens of Asaba, Delta State, in driving economic development.

The monarch spoke yesterday at the Asaba Economic Summit 2025, wherein he urged the community to take initiative rather than solely relying on the government for development solutions.

This message was conveyed during an event organised by the Sub-Committee on Summit/Exhibition, led by former Commissioner for Information, Ogbueshi (Barr.) Chike Ogeah. The summit, backed by the Palace of the Asagba of Asaba, took place at Ogwa Ukwu Ahaba, highlighting the collective responsibility of the community in fostering economic progress.

He stated, “The question, action plan that is where I want to challenge Oganihu Asaba. A lot has been said, but let this not be a talk show. Let us walk the talk; let us distil all the salient points to see how we can breath life and vitality to some of those major points.

”Investment is very crucial to us. As I always say, the population of Asaba is youthful; almost 70% youthful population. If we don’t find a way of engaging them, then we are in trouble, and the trouble is already there.

“So, whatever we can do; and let us not think that government will do everything for us. I have always said that you don’t expect government to do everything for you.

“There are certain things we must do for ourselves, and I’m happy that we are already doing so much for ourselves and we should be proud of the much we have been doing, including this summit, because it has been a resounding success.

“I have already started looking ahead. Early 2026, I have already put together the concept paper where I want to engage with Corporate Nigeria in Lagos, titled, ‘Asagba Ahaba: An Evening with Corporate Nigeria’, and it’s for purposes of investment.

“We must speak to who is who, it has never happened anywhere. But these are the kind of things I like doing; I will dare and it’s going to succeed.”

Earlier, the Chairman, Committee on Driving Investment in Asaba, Chief Afam Obiago, said the event was the visionary initiative of the incumbent Asagba which took place on the heels of the 2025 Asaba Day.

Chief Obiago who holds the title of Oganihu recalled that the 26-man committee was set up early this year by the monarch with a charge to attract investments to Asaba.

He said the Asagba had to break down the terms of reference into workable and actionable mandates, including to ensure that Asaba is investment-friendly and that existing investors are doing business in Asaba without unnecessary bottlenecks.

He added that Sub-Committees populated by subject specialists were created to take charge of Data and Research, Infrastructure and Urban Council, Land Bank, Liaison with Government Agencies, Summit/Exhibition, as well as Finance and Banking.

Obiago said the four subject specialists who made presentations were chosen to navigate the audience through various topical issues of our time.

Obiago, a renowned economist and economic consultant to the Delta State Government commended the Asagba for his vision of making Asaba an investment destination and assured him and the people that the Committee under his watch would deliver on its mandate.
