Emeka Rollas warns actors against social media ‘courtrooms’

The outgoing national president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas has issued a stern warning to Nollywood actors, cautioning against using social media as a platform for airing grievances and engaging in online disputes.

In an official notice on Instagram, Rollas emphasised that the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) will penalise members who indulge in such behavior, in line with the Guild’s constitution and disciplinary procedures.

Rollas stressed that social media trials do not bring justice and instead tarnish the image of Nollywood, and urged actors to respect recognised channels for addressing grievances.

He appealed to actors to support the incoming leadership by demonstrating good conduct, restraint, and professionalism, both online and offline.

“Official notice to all actors in Nollywood (Especially members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria – AGN)

“It has become necessary to once again address a growing and damaging practice within our industry the use of social media as a courtroom.

“Let it be clearly stated that the Actors Guild of Nigeria has already issued notices last year and we are here again that any member found calling out individuals, dragging colleagues, or prosecuting matters online will be penalized in line with the Guild’s constitution and disciplinary procedures.

“Social media trials do not bring justice. Instead, they deepen divisions, spread misinformation, and continue to tarnish the image and integrity of Nollywood, an industry we all depend on and are proud to belong to.

“As I round off my tenure and prepare to hand over to the newly elected executives, officially on Thursday 29th January 2026, it is my earnest desire that the new Executives do not inherit this culture of online drags, public accusations, and indiscipline. The Guild has recognized channels, committees, and processes for addressing grievances, and these channels must be respected.

“Be assured that justice will be served through the right channels. I therefore appeal to every actor and AGN member to support the incoming leadership by demonstrating good conduct, restraint, and professionalism, both online and offline.

“Let us protect the image of our industry, respect due process, and handle our differences with maturity and dignity. The show must go on but with discipline, respect, and unity”.

Why I have never prayed in my life – Seun Kuti

Afrobeat musician and activist Seun Kuti has declared that he has never prayed in his life, expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of prayer.

In a video, he criticised public displays of worship, describing them as childish and emphasising that true spirituality is reflected in one’s actions and values.

According to Kuti, being a good person is the essence of prayer, and outward rituals pale in comparison to living a virtuous life.

“I have never prayed before in my life, I don’t believe it works. All this eye service wey Una dey do, wey Una go go kneel down for ground, dey roll for ground, dey shout, they’re all childishness. Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is the prayer.”

Tinubu celebrates ex-Ogun deputy governor, Adesegun, at 70

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Prince Segun Adesegun, on his 70th birthday, praising his decades-long commitment to democratic ideals, progressive politics and public service.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, the President joined family, friends and political associates in celebrating Adesegun, describing him as a dependable party stalwart and patriot whose contributions to Ogun State and the nation span student activism, legislative service and executive responsibilities.

Tinubu noted that the celebrant, who is currently an ambassador-designate, previously served Ogun State twice as Commissioner for Works and Housing and also as a legislator, before rising to the position of Deputy Governor, where he played a key role in governance and infrastructure development.

The President recalled Adesegun’s early leadership roots as a student leader in the 1970s at Obafemi Awolowo University, then known as the University of Ife, and said he had remained consistent in his political convictions since emerging as a frontline political actor in the 1990s.

Tinubu particularly highlighted Adesegun’s role in the pro-democracy struggle following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late MKO Abiola, noting that the Ogun-born politician risked his life alongside other progressives to defend the sanctity of the mandate.

“Ambassador-designate Adesegun’s patriotism and commitment to democracy were clearly on display when he defied all odds, along with some of us, to fight for the sanctity of the June 12 mandate of the late MKO Abiola,” the President said, adding that the former deputy governor had since remained steadfast in his pursuit of progressive and accountable governance.

The President further acknowledged Adesegun’s role in strengthening the All Progressives Congress, saying he contributed significantly to the party’s electoral successes in Ogun State and beyond since 2015.

Tinubu prayed for continued good health and long life for the former deputy governor and his family, wishing him more years of meaningful service to the nation.

The First Lady also expressed gratitude to God for His faithfulness to the country and offered prayers for peace and security nationwide, emphasising the importance of harmony among Christians, Muslims and adherents of other faiths.

She wished Nigerians a peaceful and joyful holiday season, while expressing optimism that the coming year would bring greater unity, renewed hope and shared prosperity for the nation.

  • Nigeria scores global first as WHO names Emeje co-chair on traditional medicine governance

Nigeria scores global first as WHO names Emeje co-chair on traditional medicine governance

Nigeria has reached a significant global milestone in the governance of natural medicine, following the appointment of the Director General of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), Professor Martins Emeje, as Co-Chair of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) newly established Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine.

The appointment places Emeje at the centre of the WHO’s efforts to strengthen health systems worldwide through evidence-based traditional and integrative medicine, under its Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025.

Emeje was named Co-Chair alongside Dr Susan Wieland, Director at Cochrane Complementary Medicine, following the formal unveiling of the 19-member advisory group by the WHO.

The group is expected to provide high-level technical and strategic guidance on policy frameworks, research priorities, standards, and best practices for the safe and effective integration of traditional medicine into national health systems.

Announcing the creation of the group, the WHO described it as “a decisive step in applying a scientific response to traditional medicine,” noting that the rapid global expansion of traditional and complementary medicine had outpaced the development of strong evidence, standards, and regulatory systems.

At the inaugural meeting of the advisory group, held alongside the Second WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit in New Delhi, India, the organisation’s Assistant Director General for Health Systems, Access and Data, Dr Yukiko Nakatani, said the moment marked a turning point for traditional medicine globally.

“This is a pivotal moment for traditional medicine as it embodies cultural heritage, national health identities, and a vital component of policy healthcare strategies,” Nakatani said.

She noted that the advisory group would help the WHO and its member states move from fragmented approaches to a more coordinated, science-driven framework that recognises both the cultural relevance and public health potential of traditional medicine.

The WHO’s Chief Scientist, Dr Sylvie Briand, underscored the urgency of the initiative, warning that the sector’s rapid growth had not been matched by appropriate safeguards.

“The situation whereby the rapid growth of traditional medicine has not been matched by strong evidence, standards, regulatory frameworks, or sustainable governance underscores the urgency of this initiative,” Briand said.

Emeje’s appointment is widely seen as a recognition of Nigeria’s expanding role in research, innovation, and regulation of natural medicines.

As Director General of the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency, he has led efforts to promote the scientific validation, regulation, and commercialisation of natural medicine products, while pushing for stronger quality assurance and evidence-based practice in the sector.

His emergence as Co-Chair of the WHO advisory group signals growing confidence in Nigeria’s institutional capacity to contribute meaningfully to global health policy discussions, particularly in areas where traditional knowledge intersects with modern science.

The Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine is expected to advise the WHO on integrating traditional medicine into national health systems without compromising safety, efficacy, and quality.

Its work will include guidance on research methodologies, regulatory standards, innovation pathways, and governance models that align traditional practices with contemporary public health goals.

According to the WHO, the establishment of the group is a core component of its Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025, which seeks to harness the benefits of traditional medicine while addressing long-standing concerns around unverified claims, inconsistent standards, and weak oversight.

Observers say Emeje’s role as Co-Chair positions Nigeria to influence global conversations on how traditional medicine can be responsibly integrated into healthcare delivery, especially in low and middle-income countries where such practices remain a primary source of care for millions of people.

The appointment also reinforces calls for African countries to move beyond informal use of traditional medicine towards structured systems backed by research, regulation, and innovation.

With the advisory group now formally inaugurated, expectations are high that its work will help bridge the gap between cultural heritage and scientific validation, ensuring that traditional medicine contributes meaningfully to universal health coverage and sustainable health systems worldwide.

Northern Elders Forum calls for unity, peace in Christmas message

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has invoked teachings from both the Holy Qur’an and the Holy Bible in its Christmas message, urging Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and mutual understanding.

The forum extended warm Christmas greetings to Christians in Northern Nigeria and across the country, while also conveying goodwill to all Nigerians as the year draws to a close and a New Year begins.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NEF Spokesperson Professor Abubakar Jiddere described Christmas as a season of reflection, renewal of faith, and reaffirmation of the values of love, peace, and sacrifice.

“It is a moment that calls on individuals and nations alike to pause, look inward, and recommit to the higher ideals that sustain peaceful coexistence,” Jiddere said.

“As the Holy Bible reminds us, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men’” (Luke 2:14). This timeless message speaks directly to our shared aspiration for harmony and mutual respect in Nigeria.

“In the same spirit, the Holy Qur’an teaches, “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you” (Qur’an 49:13).

“This profound guidance underscores the sanctity of human dignity and affirms that our diversity, religious, ethnic, and cultural, is a divine trust that must be preserved through tolerance and understanding.

The elders urged Nigerians to use the festive season for sincere national reflection, stressing that the country is at a critical juncture where unity, love, and shared responsibility are essential.

Jiddere called on citizens, leaders, institutions, and communities to rise above division, reject hate, and recommit to peaceful dialogue and collective progress.

He said, “As families travel to celebrate the season with loved ones, the Forum places strong emphasis on safety and the preservation of life. We appeal to all road users to exercise caution, patience, and responsibility, and we urge security agencies and community leaders to remain vigilant in safeguarding lives and property throughout the festive period. No celebration is complete if human life is lost or endangered.

“Looking ahead to the New Year, the Northern Elders Forum expresses hope for a Nigeria guided by wisdom, justice, and compassion. We believe that with sincere leadership and responsible citizenship, our nation can overcome its challenges and move steadily toward peace, stability, and shared prosperity.”

The forum prayed that Christmas would bring comfort to every home and that the New Year would usher in renewed hope, national healing, and a stronger sense of brotherhood among Nigerians.

Governor Otti hosts Abia-born Super Falcons after 2024 WAFCON triumph

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has hosted three victorious Super Falcons of Abia origin who helped Nigeria lift the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy in Morocco, defeating the host nation in Rabat to secure a record 10th title.

The players hosted include Miracle Useni Ofem of the state-owned Abia Angels, Christy Ucheibe (represented by her father) of Portugal’s Benfica FC, and Esther Okoronkwo of AFC Toronto, Canada.

Governor Otti congratulated the players, expressing pride in their achievement and the honour they brought to Abia State and Nigeria.

“I just want to thank you for bringing honour and pride to this State and Nation. We are very happy that you emerged as champions. Of course, Abia State is a State of champions,” he said.

The Governor explained that the visit had been planned earlier but could not take place due to the players’ tight schedules. He emphasized that his administration celebrates excellence to inspire others.

“We like to celebrate people who have done well so that others would emulate them and even want to do better than them. As you perform better, be assured that we are also going to celebrate you,” Gov. Otti added.

A special reward package for the victorious Falcons will be delivered through the Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, who also thanked Governor Otti for his continuous support of sports and youth development in the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Abia Angels, Mr. Johnson Nwosu, praised the Governor’s backing, noting that the team has evolved from being a player-supply club to one of Nigeria’s elite teams. “If you cannot perform under this administration, go and look for something else; something is wrong. The name of the State is now a visa for the players,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of the players, Miracle Useni expressed gratitude to Governor Otti, saying, “Being received by His Excellency is a big honour and a privilege for me. I would say, thank you to His Excellency and thank you to Abia State as a whole.”

  • 2027: Tinubu will win Oyo convincingly, Ex-Oyo chief whip slams Makinde

2027: Tinubu will win Oyo convincingly, Ex-Oyo chief whip slams Makinde

A former Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Adigun-Hammed, has predicted a landslide victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Oyo State in the 2027 elections.

Adigun-Hammed described as “unthinkable” the idea that President Tinubu would entrust the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State to Governor Seyi Makinde.

His comments came in reaction to statements attributed to Makinde during a media chat on Tuesday, in which the governor allegedly claimed that former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike offered to deliver Oyo State to Tinubu—a proposal Makinde purportedly declined.

In a statement, Adigun-Hammed dismissed Makinde’s claim as false, asserting that the governor could not be trusted with any political arrangement. He cited Makinde’s alleged betrayals of former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, Senator Sarafadeen Alli, and other political stakeholders who supported him in 2019, warning that such behavior could extend to anyone.

The former lawmaker also raised questions about a contract Makinde said he was awarded in 1997, reportedly valued at $1 million, urging Nigerians to seek clarity on its execution.

Adigun-Hammed further claimed that the APC was gaining momentum in Oyo State, arguing that residents were beginning to see through what he called Makinde’s “pretence and political games.”

“Makinde has proved to be a serial liar and pretender. How can his ally ask President Tinubu to give Oyo State to ‘arrange’ for us, when we have three senators, nine House of Representatives members, three former deputy governors, ex-ministers, and experienced politicians? Such a claim is a lie from the pit of hell,” he said.

He also accused Makinde of failing to acknowledge the support he received from the President and other stakeholders during his re-election bid in 2023, instead repaying them with falsehoods.

Looking ahead to 2027, Adigun-Hammed expressed full confidence that President Tinubu would defeat Governor Makinde—and any candidate Makinde supports—predicting a decisive victory for the APC in Oyo State.

Tinubu names speaker Abbas to chair APC reconciliation committee in Benue

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has constituted a reconciliation committee for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State and appointed the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, as chairman.

This marks the second time President Tinubu has entrusted the Speaker with such an assignment, following his appointment as chairman of the APC reconciliation committee for Bauchi State about four months ago.

The Benue APC reconciliation committee is mandated to address and resolve the internal crises currently affecting the party in the state.

Its terms of reference include investigating the root causes of factionalism and disunity within the Benue APC; engaging key stakeholders and party organs to foster reconciliation; proposing structural, procedural, and strategic reforms to ensure sustainable peace and political cohesion; and submitting a comprehensive report with recommendations for the President’s consideration.

Members of the committee include the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni; Senator Abdulaziz Yari; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Masari.

The Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Prof. Jake Dan-Azumi, will serve as secretary to the committee, while the Chief of Staff to the Yobe State Governor, Abdullahi Gashua, will be part of the secretariat.

The committee is expected to commence work immediately, engaging all relevant stakeholders in a bid to restore unity within the party.

In August this year, President Tinubu appointed Speaker Abbas to chair the APC reconciliation committee for Bauchi State, which has since concluded its assignment.
