  • Tinubu re-states VIP police guards withdrawal order

Tinubu re-states VIP police guards withdrawal order

…orders engagement of NSCDC to replace police on VIP guard duties

…seeks conversion of grazing reserves to ranches

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday reaffirmed his directive that police officers currently attached to VIPs be withdrawn and redeployed to conflict-prone areas, insisting that the nation cannot afford to keep essential security manpower away from pressing security theatres.

The President restated the order just before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, tasking relevant security agencies to immediately implement the directive to strengthen the ongoing fight against terrorism, kidnapping, and violent criminal activity across the country.

“I honestly believe in what I said, and I called the IGP… If you have any security problems because of the nature of the assignment, please contact the IGP and get my clearance,” President Tinubu said, pointing out that exceptional cases would be treated with approval.

He directed that the Ministry of Interior liaise with the Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to replace police personnel withdrawn from VIP protection duties.

“The Minister of Interior should liaise with the IGP and Civil Defence structure to replace those police officers who are on special security duties, so that you don’t leave people exposed,” he said.

The President further instructed the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to form a committee to review the structure and ensure full implementation of the redeployment plan.

“NSA and DSS to provide further information and form themselves into a committee and review the structure. It should be effected,” he said.

Expressing concern over the rising incidents of kidnapping and terrorism, President Tinubu stressed that all available manpower must be channelled to areas of need.

“We face challenges here and there of kidnapping and terrorism; we need all the forces that we can utilise,” he stated.

While acknowledging that special circumstances may require security considerations for some individuals, the President insisted that other armed formations must take up such responsibilities.

“I know some of our people are exposed… civil defence are equally armed and I want to know from the NSA to arm our forest guards too. Take it very seriously,” he added.

On the livestock sector, President Tinubu instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to begin, through the National Economic Council (NEC), the process of identifying grazing reserves that can be rehabilitated into ranches or livestock settlements, describing the reform as a crucial step in ending perennial herder–farmer conflicts.

“Again, especially livestock reform, I think the Vice President should get the NEC first of all to see which villages or grazing reserves can be salvaged or rehabilitated into ranches, livestock settlement.” he said.

The President stressed that converting grazing areas into viable agricultural and commercial hubs would create jobs, expand economic opportunities, and end conflict cycles.

“We must eliminate the possibility of conflicts and turn the livestock reform into economically viable development. The opportunity is there, let’s utilise it,” he noted.

He reminded state governments of their constitutional authority over land and urged them to cooperate in the process.

“If we emphasize the constitutional requirement which says the land belongs to the states… whichever one they can salvage, convert to a livestock village or herders’ village. Let us stop this conflict area and turn it into economic opportunities and prosperity,” the President said.

The renewed directive comes amid the administration’s ongoing security overhaul and the push to modernise Nigeria’s livestock industry as part of broader agricultural reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

FG assures indigenous contractors of patronage in infrastructure development

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has expressed the federal government’s resolve to engage reputable indigenous contractors in the execution of critical infrastructure projects.

He made this disclosure during an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction of the Abuja-Keffi Road.

The minister expressed satisfaction over the quality of the works on the road, which was awarded for reconstruction in October 2025 to an indigenous contractor, JRB Construction Company Limited.

The Abuja-Keffi dual carriageway project is a critical infrastructure development that aims to improve road connectivity and reduce travel time between the nation’s capital and Nasarawa State, where most of the federal civil servants working in Abuja reside.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.

C9mmending the project as top notch, the Minister said, “This is the kind of organisation that will grow this country. Be assured that Mr President is aware of what you are doing. And you are going to be paid to the last kobo.”

Umahi reiterated the federal government’s commitment to continue to support and empower indigenous companies that have demonstrated exceptional performance and patriotism in their work.

He added, “We want to see more indigenous companies like JRB Construction Company Limited, which have demonstrated exceptional performance and patriotism in their work.

“We will continue to support and empower indigenous companies that have the capacity to deliver high-standard projects and contribute to the growth and development of the country.”

“The recognition of JRB Construction Company Limited by the federal government is a testament to the company’s exceptional performance and commitment to delivering high-standard projects.

“The company’s reputation as one of the top indigenous construction companies in Nigeria has been reinforced, and it is expected to continue to play a critical role in the development of infrastructure in the country.”

  • Why technical, applied science education are key to Nigeria’s development – AATU VC

Why technical, applied science education are key to Nigeria’s development – AATU VC

The Vice-Chancellor, Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, Professor Adesola Ajayi, has called for the strengthening of technical and applied science education, saying they remain central to Nigeria’s development.

This is as he also said, universities must become hubs of practical innovation rather than mere centres of theory.

He spoke while fielding questions from reporters at a press conference, as part of activities marking the convocation week of the University.

He noted that the mandate of the institution as a technology-focused university is to produce graduates who are technically grounded, entrepreneurially prepared, and globally competitive.

Speaking on the graduation statistics, he said no fewer than 50 students bagged First Class Honours out of a total of 183 students who will be bagging degrees from various departments of the institution at the coming fifth convocation ceremonies.

He recalled that the emphasis on technical education formed the backdrop to the university’s training.

Giving the breakdown of the graduands, the Vice-Chancellor said that 75 graduands emerge from the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, 86 are from Engineering and Technology, and 22 from the newly established Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

While highlighting the significant infrastructural and academic progress made by the institution, Prof. Ajayi acknowledged support from both the federal and Oyo state governments, noting that the state government has allocated N2.5 billion as a capital project in this year’s budget, alongside other direct infrastructural interventions.

He added that the university has benefitted considerably from TETFund, which has committed about N4 billion towards various projects across the campus.

According to him, Infrastructural upgrades included internal road construction, a completed workshop, an ongoing staff office complex, and a 200-bed hostel built through a PPP arrangement, now approximately 90 per cent completed.

On the large number of First-Class graduates, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated the institution’s reputation for academic rigour, saying, “We have a very rigorous system not only for students but for staff. Nobody gets any form of discretion to make a First Class; it is merit-based.

“In the sciences, the answers are clear; either you get them right, or you don’t. Naturally, even in federal universities, there is a preponderance of First Class and Second Class Upper graduates in the sciences, and we are a major science institution.”

He disclosed that on security, the university has introduced proactive measures to protect students, adding that Amotekun operatives have been specially deployed to the institution, while a full perimeter fence has been completed.

“Our security staff have also undergone government-facilitated training to strengthen campus safety,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to staff development through continuous training and retraining, aimed at enhancing performance and welfare.

He added that this year’s convocation is particularly significant as it coincides with the university’s 13th Founders’ Week.

“Although the institution received its licence in 2012, academic activities formally began in January 2018. Since then, the university has grown “steadily, purposefully and responsibly.

“This year’s graduating set includes the first cohorts from Science Laboratory Technology, Civil Engineering, Industrial and Production Engineering, and all six programmes within the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

“The celebrations began with a Thanksgiving Service on 7 December, while a Jumat Service will hold on Friday, ahead of the Convocation ceremony on Saturday, which Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to attend.”

“A distinguishing feature of the university is that every student graduates with three certificates: a Bachelor’s degree, a Diploma in Entrepreneurship, and a Diploma in French.

“This tripartite certification reflects the institution’s vision to produce graduates who are academically grounded, entrepreneurially equipped, and linguistically empowered”, he said

He added that when the pioneer First-Class graduates completed their studies, each received a scholarship, and those who opted to work at the university were employed at a monthly salary of N150,000 and sponsored for postgraduate degrees, support which now extends to their PhD programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor further stressed that as a technology institution, the university is committed to research that solves real problems.

“The Research Committee has adopted Ibadan metropolis as its research laboratory, with final-year projects tied to observed community needs. Examples include a smart device for detecting adulterated fuel, engineering solutions for domestic electrical faults, and prototypes addressing urban and environmental challenges.

“The university’s entrepreneurship programme helps students refine these innovations, pitch ideas, and receive mentorship, resulting in graduates who excel globally, with some now working as academics abroad.”

Professor Ajayi said the institution maintained strong partnerships with industries, private companies, and professional bodies to provide students with internships, industry exposure, and employment opportunities.

He added that the university’s governance structure is rooted in transparency, merit, and clearly defined succession plans guided by established laws, with recruitment based on measurable performance indicators.

The tournament drew an impressive turnout, with several top schools fielding their brightest young athletes in a contest for medals, trophies, and supremacy.

Organiser of the event, Coach Henry Shedrack, expressed satisfaction with the success of this year’s outing.

He said that the next edition would be upgraded into a week-long tennis festival to provide deeper engagement and more development opportunities for young players.

He underscored the importance of grassroots tournaments such as the International Tennis Classic in keeping young athletes competitive, fit, and mentally ready for higher levels of the sport.

He called on corporate organisations to emulate the efforts of the Italian School in supporting grassroots tennis development.

He also urged increased investment in youth tennis initiatives nationwide, noting that such support is key to strengthening the sport’s future.

  • Ningi faults withdrawal of police orderly, insists presidential security directive be enforced evenly

Ningi faults withdrawal of police orderly, insists presidential security directive be enforced evenly

A mild drama unfolded in the Senate on Wednesday as Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) protested the withdrawal of his only police orderly, insisting that the directive ordering the removal of police escorts from VIPs must be applied across the board and not targeted at lawmakers.

Raising a point of order during plenary, Ningi described the action as discriminatory, alleging that ministers, business executives, children of top officials, and even entertainers still move around with heavy police escorts despite the nationwide directive issued by the President and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

He argued that withdrawing his single orderly while others retain full security cover violates the principles of fairness and equity.

“Mr President, I saw two convoys of ministers with plenty of security personnel,” he said. “I have seen Chinese business concerns with their compliments of orderlies. I have seen sons and daughters of political office holders with full security cover. I have even seen singers with orderlies.

“But a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who has been here for a very long time, had only one orderly, and he has been withdrawn.

“Let it be done across the board. Let me not see governors, ministers, and business concerns being covered while Senators are made scapegoats. This is unheard of in any democracy.”

Ningi urged the Senate President to direct the Committee on Police Affairs to investigate why the presidential directive on withdrawal of policemen from VIPs was allegedly being flouted.

“You cannot put the National Assembly as a scapegoat while others enjoy the privilege of security cover,” he said.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, assured the lawmaker that the Senate leadership had already taken up the matter and expected feedback from the authorities.

Barau disclosed that the issue was discussed at the Senate leadership meeting on Tuesday and that steps had been initiated to address the selective withdrawal of police orderlies.

“We are on top of the situation,” he said. “The Chairman of the Police Affairs Committee will investigate why the presidential directive is being flouted by some categories of persons, singers, businessmen, and others, who still have policemen attached to them.”

Barau emphasised that President Bola Tinubu’s directive was issued in good faith to strengthen internal security by freeing police personnel from VIP duties.

He added that the Senate leadership agreed that Ningi’s police orderly should be restored, in line with international parliamentary practice.

“We have a listening President,” Barau said. “By the grace of God, he will attend to this matter. The Senate stands with the President in his effort to tackle security challenges. But your protection is important, and the leadership has taken it seriously.”

He thanked Ningi for raising the concern and assured senators that the matter “has been addressed.”

Ex-Aviation Minister Stella Oduah arraigned with former aide over alleged N5b fraud

A former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, has been arraigned before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Maitama on a five-count charge, in which she is accused, among other things, of misappropriating about N5 billion in public funds.

Oduah was arraigned along with one of her ex-aides, Gloria Odita, on the charge marked: CR/606/2025 filed on October 14 by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

The ex-minister and her co-defendant were alleged to have committed the offences contained in the charge between January and February 2014, while she was in office.

The two defendants pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them on Wednesday.

Shortly after their arraignment, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), who appeared for the ex-minister, and Wale Balogun (SAN), for the second defendant, applied for bail.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who led the prosecuting team, did not oppose the defendants’ bail applications.

Fagbemi urged the court to order the defendants to deposit their travel documents with the court to ensure that they are available for trial.

Ruling, Justice Hamza Muazu granted both defendants bail on self-recognition and ordered Oduah to submit her international passport, which she must only retrieve with the permission of the court.

Justice Muazu said since Odita’s passport was being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in relation to another case, the document should not be released under the conclusion of that case, following which it should be transferred to his court.
