Abbas Tajudeen, on Saturday unveiled a fully funded scholarship scheme for about 250 students pursuing Higher National Diploma, Ordinary National Diploma, and National Diploma programmes in Leather Technology at the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Zaria.

The Speaker also performed the groundbreaking of six major developmental projects in the Zaria Federal Constituency. The projects include the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, a Sports Academy, a Technical and Vocational Training College, a Centre for Management Development, a Women’s Development Centre, and new male and female hostels at NILEST.

Speaking at the event held at the Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, Speaker Abbas said the initiatives marked the beginning of a new wave of growth and transformation for the constituency.

“It is a chapter built on vision. It is built on the collective hope of our people. It is rooted in the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. It is inspired by our shared belief that Zaria deserves the very best.”

Speaker Abbas said he facilitated the College of Agriculture and Animal Science because “Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy” adding that “With this institution, our youth will gain modern skills in crop production. They will learn livestock management. They will study agribusiness. They will become part of the future of food security in Nigeria.

“Agriculture is also linked to national security because hunger fuels instability. This college, therefore, contributes not only to the growth of our economy but also to the stability of our region.”

Speaking on the importance of the technical and vocational training college, the Speaker said it would provide the youth with the platform to acquire practical skills directly linked to technology, construction, the automotive industry, among others.

It will produce professionals who will support national growth. Leadership is critical to development, and this institution will help build the next generation of leaders.”

As for the Women’s Development Centre, the Speaker said it would provide training, support entrepreneurship, promote health awareness, and strengthen women’s capacity to participate fully in social and economic life because “empowered women raise empowered families, build stronger communities, and strengthen nations.”

He stated that the scholarships would “remove financial barriers, reward excellence, and encourage more young people to enter a sector with significant industrial potential. Leather technology is a global industry. Nigeria must not be left out. Zaria must not be left out.”

He said his vision is clear, which is to consolidate Zaria’s position as Nigeria’s premier centre of learning.

“We will also enhance its role as a hub of skills. We will build its capacity as a centre of enterprise. We will deepen its reputation as a haven of peace. • Enugu, EU deepen strategic ties, roll out new energy, education projects

Enugu, EU deepen strategic ties, roll out new energy, education projects

The Enugu State Government and the European Union (EU) have agreed to scale up their collaboration across key sectors, especially education, energy, health and youth empowerment.

This emerged at the weekend during a courtesy visit to Governor Peter Mbah by a high-level EU delegation at the Government House, Enugu.

The delegation, led by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, also included the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Pieter Leenknegt, and the Portuguese Ambassador, Mr. Paulos Martins dos Santos, among other senior diplomats.

Mignot said the EU was committed to strengthening cooperation in ways that align with Mbah’s ambitious reform agenda.

“The purpose of the visit is to meet you and talk about the partnership between the European Union and Enugu State, its potential, and your vision for the future,” he stated.

He highlighted ongoing EU-supported projects in the state, particularly in the energy and education sectors.

“On energy, Enugu is one of seven states benefiting from the Solar for Health Project, under which we will provide technical assistance and funding for 20 solar microgrids that will power 20 primary health centres and 124 SMEs,” he said.

The envoy also listed the Small Hydro Power for Agro-industrial Sectors Project, implemented by UNIDO, and the Nigeria Energy Support Programme executed by GIZ, which includes electrification support, capacity building and funding for three interconnected minigrids with a combined 1MW capacity for up to 1,000 beneficiaries.

On education, Mignot announced that Enugu is one of the beneficiary states in the EU-UNESCO programme, Education and Youth Empowerment in Nigeria, Expand, Integrate and Strengthen Systems (EISS), which will train teachers in Smart Green Schools until June 2028.

He further noted the EU’s partnership with the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival held annually in Enugu, saying the 2025 edition included grants and training for emerging filmmakers.

Belgian Ambassador Leenknegt underscored Belgium’s longstanding economic ties with Enugu, particularly through Emenite Limited, a Nigeria–Belgium joint venture established in 1961.

“They are delivering high-quality products and employing more than 300 people from the region. We will continue to foster this relationship,” he said.

Portugal’s Ambassador, Martins dos Santos, highlighted his country’s interests in energy, infrastructure and agriculture, noting that “the footprint of the European Union in this country is huge and multidimensional.”

Responding, Governor Mbah thanked the EU for its alignment with his administration’s developmental priorities, particularly in education, health and energy.

“I have seen a huge alliance between our vision and the aims of the EU, especially regarding your programmes across Africa,” he said, noting that Enugu’s decision to allocate over 33% of its budget to education was to secure the state’s future competitiveness.

Mbah invited EU member countries to explore new investment opportunities in aviation, gas and energy, disclosing that the state-owned carrier, Enugu Air, had been launched, and that the international wing of Akanu Ibiam International Airport would soon become fully operational.

“That means more international carriers will fly from Enugu. We encourage you to speak to your home carriers to consider Enugu,” he said.

He added that the state was working with the Federal Government to extend gas pipelines to Enugu to unlock economic opportunities in the gas subsector.

“We are open for business and will continue to ensure that investments and businesses thrive in Enugu State,” Mbah assured.

  • DESOPADEC renews anti-drug, anti-cult campaigns in Delta schools

DESOPADEC renews anti-drug, anti-cult campaigns in Delta schools

In a renewed effort to address the alarming rise in drug and substance abuse, as well as cult-related activities among teenagers, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has launched an intensified sensitization initiative across secondary schools in Ndokwa Nation of the state.

Spearheaded by Chief Festus Ochonogor, the Managing Director/CEO, this latest outreach is part of a broader strategy to protect adolescent well-being in oil-producing areas.

On November 28, 2025, the commission visited Ebologu Grammar School and St. Kizito College in Utagba-Uno.

During those sessions, students were provided with crucial, practical information regarding the dangers associated with drug misuse and the detrimental long-term effects of cultism.

The Community Development and Public Enlightenment Department of DESOPADEC emphasized that this campaign plays an essential role in the Commission’s youth development blueprint.

They highlighted the significant threats that drug abuse and cultism pose to education, community advancement, and the overall mental health of young people.

The outreach aims to foster awareness and encourage healthier lifestyle choices among the youth in the state.

Head of the Department, Mrs. Chinenye Ezonfade, explained that the sensitisation exercise aligned with the mandate of the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; DESOPADEC Board Chairman, Olorogun Obukowho John Nani; MD/CEO, Chief Festus Ochonogor; and the Executive Director, Social Services, Chief Favour Izoukumor.

She commended Comrade Esumike Harrison Nnamdi, Principal of Ebologu Grammar School, and Chief Ossai A. John, Vice Principal of St. Kizito College, for mobilising their students for the programme.

Delivering a goodwill message, Ochonogor urged students to take the campaigns seriously and stay vigilant against the lure of drugs and cultism.

He stated, “Drug abuse destroys potential. It weakens the mind, damages health, and cultism equally robs bright young people of the opportunity to become their best selves. But each of you carries a unique gift—your families, community, and our State are depending on you to rise and shine.”

Facilitators Ms. Elizabeth Odisu and Ms. Honeywell Eburajolor led interactive sessions addressing peer pressure, common entry points into drug abuse, cult influence, prostitution, emotional challenges, and the ripple effects of addiction on homes and society.

Students were encouraged to cultivate discipline, embrace positive peer influence, and pursue purposeful living as shields against destructive behaviours.

School authorities from both schools expressed appreciation to DESOPADEC for selecting their institutions for the sensitisation drive, describing the outreach as timely and impactful.

They appealed for the programme to be sustained for the benefit of younger generations.

Several students also shared their gratitude, noting that the sessions clarified issues they had either misunderstood or never deeply considered.

DESOPADEC reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining its school and community sensitisation efforts across its mandate areas, with the goal of nurturing healthier, more informed communities and empowering young people to make responsible life choices.

  • MKO Abiola’s ally Su-kazeem knocks Sanusi for criticising Tinubu’s economic reforms

MKO Abiola’s ally Su-kazeem knocks Sanusi for criticising Tinubu’s economic reforms

A close ally of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, popularly known as Su-Kazeem, has criticised former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, over his recent comments faulting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies.

Su-Kazeem said Sanusi should stop using ethnicity and religion to score cheap political points while attacking what he described as the giant strides of President Tinubu’s economic reforms.

In a statement, the Ibadan-based property merchant described Sanusi’s criticism as misinformed, insisting that the former CBN governor lacked the moral ground to advise the government.

He argued that Sanusi’s comments showed no genuine concern for Nigeria’s progress.

Expressing his support for President Tinubu’s economic measures, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, Su-Kazeem said the reforms have earned widespread endorsement from global economic experts and international institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF.

He said, “Firstly, let us recognise that President Tinubu has taken bold steps to correct decades of economic mismanagement.

“The removal of the fuel subsidy, while initially challenging, was a necessary move to free up resources for critical infrastructure and social investments, which has further helped mitigate its impact on the vulnerable populations.

“The unification of the exchange rate has also been widely praised by global financial institutions, including the World Bank and IMF, as a step toward long-term economic stability.

“Secondly, it is worth noting that these reforms have received widespread support from global economic experts. The World Bank has projected positive growth for Nigeria’s economy in the coming years, affirming that we are on a path to recovery.

“Evidently, the Tinubu administration is steering Nigeria in the right direction despite the temporary pains of adjustment. It is no news that President Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated its openness to dialogue with stakeholders with meaningful contributions across various sectors.

“This government has prioritized transparency and inclusivity, ensuring that the voices of ordinary Nigerians are heard in shaping policies that directly affect their lives.

“Additionally, efforts are underway to communicate these policies effectively in local languages, ensuring that all Nigerians understand the benefits of these reforms.

“Rather than acknowledging these efforts or contributing positive ideas to enhance their effectiveness, Sanusi opted for a cynical and self-serving narrative. In contrast, what has Sanusi offered? Criticisms that are devoid of actionable solutions and reflect a parrot-like analysis of Nigeria’s economic situation.”
