COPD: Experts seek improved community awareness, early diagnosis

Medical experts have raised the alarm over the rising burden of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in Nigeria and across Africa, calling for urgent policy reforms, increased community awareness, and improved access to diagnosis and treatment.

This was the focus at a pre-conference training workshop in Lagos ahead of the Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS) Annual Congress.

The Lagos workshop is part of RACE AFRICA and the NIHR UK funded EQUI-RESP-AFRICA project, a multinational programme raising COPD awareness and training healthcare workers across Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Cameroon.

Professor Obianuju Ozoh, pulmonologist at the University of Lagos, College of Medicine and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), described COPD as a chronic lung disease that causes persistent shortness of breath, cough, and sputum production.

She stressed that although common, preventable, and treatable, the disease remains largely under diagnosed in Nigeria.

Ozoh explained that risk factors begin even before birth, influenced by what pregnant mothers are exposed to, as well as early-life exposure to indoor smoke, air pollution, traffic fumes, and smoking.

She advocated strong national policies prioritising COPD, including access to spirometry equipment for early diagnosis and the affordability of inhalers.

“Lung function tests are available only in a few tertiary hospitals. Without diagnosis, we cannot treat. Policymakers must make inhalers available and affordable if we want to save lives,” she added.

As a member of the Board of Directors and Science Committee of the Global Initiative on Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), Prof. Ozoh said she is committed to advocating for COPD patients, many of whom are too ill to speak for themselves.“

Professor Jibril Mohamed, a respiratory physiotherapy specialist from Bayero University Kano, highlighted efforts to develop local, low-cost approaches to pulmonary rehabilitation for indigent patients.

“We are adapting pulmonary rehabilitation using local resources so that patients in poor communities can access care without expensive equipment,” he said.

He added that community health extension workers are also being trained to deliver COPD care at the primary healthcare level.

For many participants, the training offered fresh insight into managing COPD.

Zainab Olanyi, a physical therapist, described the seminar as “very enlightening,” noting that the knowledge would help clinicians better diagnose and manage COPD through structured pulmonary rehabilitation.

“We work to improve lung function and enhance the quality of life for patients. This training will help us provide better solutions,” she said.

Radda lauds NYSC for contribution to Kastina manpower, community development

Katsina Governor Dikko Radda has lauded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for posting members to the State to meet its manpower needs and community development.

Raadda added the State would not have achieved current level of development in key sectors without the meaningful contributions of NYSC members posted to the State.

The Governor was speaking at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Katsina, during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corp members deployed to the State.

Represented by the Youth and Sports Development Commissioner, Engineer Suraj Yazid; Radda identified the health and educational sectors as major areas where corp members had made meaningful contributions in the state.

He  said: “NYSC members have made much impact in the area of community development services, especially in the rural areas of the State.

“I wish to place on record our appreciation of the contributions of corp members in Community Development Service (CDS) projects and augmenting the manpower needs in our educational and health sectors”

“I challenge you therefore to line up to the standard already set by you predecessors to the progress and development of Katsina State and the nation in general.’

“Let me reiterate that during your stay in this camp and throughout your service year, you are to shun cultism, political as well as religious tolerance or any other form of anti-social behaviour.

“You are to be guided by the motto of the National Youth Service Corps’ scheme which is Service to Humanity bearing in mind the Oath of Allegiance you have sworn to uphold.”

Kastina NYSC coordinator, Ibrahim Saidu said s total of 1,195 corp members had registered for the orientation camp, with 695 of them males and 499 females.

Saidu said part of the three week camp would involve training on entrepreneurship skills for self-reliance and economic empowerment for the corp members.

He called on the corp members to ensure full participation in the camp’s activities, as doing so would make them prepared for the future ahead of them.

CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH Nigeria and Overseas

    PRESS RELEASE

Re: The terror attack on Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, Kwara State

It was with a heavy heart and a deep sense of sorrow that the Authorities of Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria and Overseas received the tragic news of the recent attack by terrorists, on an assembly of the Church located in Eruku, in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. Reports reveal that three members of the Church lost their lives during the incident, while the resident Pastor and several other members were abducted.

First and foremost, our hearts go out to the families of the departed. We share in your griefs and we pray that God will comfort you and give you the fortitude to bear your losses. We also continue to pray for those abducted, that they will be released quickly and unharmed, in Jesus’ precious Name.

Like similar sacrilegious attacks on places of worship in the past, the Authorities of the Church condemn this barbaric attack on the CAC Church at Eruku in its totality. It is inhuman and devilish,  and a direct assault on the collective humanity of all right thinking Nigerians.

The unfortunate attack further exposes the abysmal failure of the Federal Government to live up to one of its fundamental constitutional duties, which is the protection its citizens. The relentless wave of terrorist attacks on places of worship also confirms the fact that the Christian faith in Nigeria is under grave existential threat.

We consider it a collective shame on all of us as a nation and a dishonor to the souls of murdered victims of terrorist attacks, that the most reaction often received from our Government after such incidents, is mere condemnation in the media, after which the nation moves on and the Government continues with business as usual.

Another source of great disappointment is the role played (or not played) by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other Christian associations established to serve the interests of the Christian community. Perhaps there has been no other time than now, in recent history, when there has been a dire need for CAN to cry out on behalf of their own. In our humble opinion, the lamentations of Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo of Plateau State, which was a major factor that helped to direct global spotlight on the atrocities in Nigeria, were properly the duty and prerogative of CAN and other Christian associations, a duty in which CAN has unfortunately been failing.

With the utmost respect, the silence of CAN concerning the genocide on christians in Nigeria, has been too deafening. CAN has to rise up to its sacred responsibility and reclaim the confidence of Christians, as the umbrella body representing the interest of Christians and Christian organisations in Nigeria.

We also call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to rise up urgently to the challenge of the moment. The President needs to face the stark reality that our dear nation may presently be teetering on the brink of collapse as a failed state, unless fundamental actions are taken to address the growing menace of insecurity. Respectfully, merely directing the military to perform their statutory duty is not enough. It is very disturbing that even as this piece was being written,  we received a fresh report that about 50 students have been kidnapped from a Catholic secondary school in Niger State!

There is an urgent need for the declaration of a national state of emergency, coupled with deliberate strategic and persistent pushback on terror. War must be declared on terrorists and this has to take the front burner of Government policies and actions. Among other benefits,  such actions will also help to change the growing suspicion now prevalent in the public space, of Government’s complicity with the perpetrators of terror.

Although the terrorists’ attacks are mostly targeted at Christians, every law abiding and right thinking Nigerian is a victim or a potential victim, in one way or the other, irrespective of our religious and ethnic differences. We therefore also reach out to the Muslim community in Nigeria and urge them to cooperate with us in condemning and confronting this unfortunate evil of terrorism and wanton killings being perpetrated in the name of religion.

To our fellow members of Christ Apostolic Church, home and abroad, now is the time more than ever, to forget the trivial things that divide us, and unite to fight a common evil. Let us remember our enviable history and spiritual heritage of efficacious prayers and prophetic direction, for the sake of our precious members, not only in Eruku but all over the world. Moreover, Nigeria needs our prayers now more than ever,  but such effectual prayers can only avail in unity.

Finally, we urge all Christians across denominations to pay more attention to security in their assemblies, because the days are evil. We also need to rise up as one in persistent intercession to God, to be merciful and heal our land, in accordance with the prescription in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

May God hear our prayers and expose both sponsors and perpetrators of evil in Nigeria. May the dawn of a new and glorious Nigeria come in unity, peace and righteousness. Amen.

Pastor (Barrister) David Udofia, General Secretary

  • Palmer fractures toe by stubbing it on door

Palmer fractures toe by stubbing it on door

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer will be absent for another week because he fractured his toe when he stubbed it on a door on Wednesday night.

The England forward was set to resume first-team training this week after two months out with a groin injury.

But the 23-year-old will remain out for slightly longer because of the injury to the small toe on his favoured left foot.

He will miss the Blues’ next three fixtures – Saturday’s Premier League game at Burnley, Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Barcelona and next weekend’s match at home to Arsenal.

“He is probably not available for Saturday for sure, Barcelona for sure or Arsenal for sure,” said Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

“Unfortunately, he had an accident at home where he hit his toe. It is nothing important, but he won’t be back in the next week.

“I wake up many times during the night – I hit my head, my legs, my everything – so it can happen.”

Palmer’s most recent appearance was during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on 20 September.

The Blues have played 11 games in all competitions since then – winning eight and losing two – and sit third in the Premier League table.

“I think that his team-mates are better players with Cole playing,” added Maresca. “I feel much better when Cole is on the pitch, and we all want Cole on the pitch.

“At the same time, when Cole is not on the pitch, we need to find a solution. The team is doing very well but we are better with Cole. He was almost back with us.”

Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Benoit Badiashile are all available for the trip to Turf Moor.

Chelsea have Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi in their so-called ‘bomb squad’ and Maresca confirmed nothing has changed with the pair, despite the defender’s involvement with the Under-21s and first-team training during the international break.

“Axel and Raheem are Chelsea players,” he said. “Axel is helping the second team, he’s helping the younger players.

“During the international break we had just five, six players here, so we needed some second-team players. Axel was part of some sessions with second-team players, but I think it was just one session with us.”

‘No bandit invasion or closure of Tai Solarin Federal University’

Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, has refuted reports making the rounds on social media that it has shut down academic and non – academic businesses following purported invasion of its campus by bandits from the north.

The Management of TASFUED on Saturday said there was neither invasion of its campus by bandits nor was it closed, urging students, staff, parents, alumni, and the general public to ignore the malicious reports in circulation.

The management, in a statement by the Registrar & Secretary to Council, Dapo Oke, said the story was false, misleading and crafted to cause unnecessary panic in the University Community and the State.

It noted that the purveyors of the malicious and false narrative claimed the purported closure was due to the “recent invasion of Ijebu-Ode by bandits,” and urged all stakeholders to rely solely on the university’s official communication channels for any update.

It stated: “We wish to put it on record that at no time did the University Management order the closure of the institution, or issue any  directive to students to vacate their  hostels at Ijagun or Ijebu-Ode as a result of any form of ‘invasion’.

Why I don’t bath my newborn everyday – Toke Makinwa

Media personality Toke Makinwa has addressed new moms on the unconventional approach to bathing a newborn.

In a video message, Makinde disclosed that she doesn’t bath her baby daily, expressing concerns that frequent bathing may be detrimental to the infant’s sensitive skin.

She argued that babies, having spent nine months in the womb, are not inherently dirty and therefore don’t require daily cleansing.

“I know I’m a new mom, and I’m literally just learning as I go, but I really think excessive showering causes skin problems in babies. Babies are not dirty. They’ve been inside the womb for nine months, and inside your womb is not dirty,” she said.

As a first-time mom, she said she is embracing a learning curve, admitting she previously judged her sister for a similar approach with her niece.

However, after observing the positive impact on her niece’s skin health, she decided to adopt a less frequent bathing schedule for her own baby, Yaya.

According to her, she plans to gradually introduce daily baths when Yaya is between four to six-month-old.

Sokoto PDP youths, students reject expulsion of Bature

Sokoto Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youths and students stakeholders forum has rejected what it described as purported expulsion of the party’s National Organising Secretary, Hon. Umar Bature by a faction of the party saying ” the action is null, void and ineffective.”

It said the action lacked the constitutional backing , moral justification or political legitimacy emanating from an unverified factional convention that has no standing in the PDP.

The forum urged the public and PDP faithful to disregard with utmost passion what it described as lies being  circulated.

Bature with other top members of the party, including the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike were last week expelled from the party for alleged “anti party ” activities amidst factional crisis rocking  the opposition party.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Sokoto , Chairman of the forum, Comrade Bala Bello and Secretary , Comrade Nasiru Yakubu said the expulsion of Hon. Bature was unconstitutional and absolutely of no effect.

” The controversy emanates from an unverified and factional convention purportedly conducted by a splinter group claiming to act on behalf of the PDP,” they stated.

They noted that Bature remains a dependable political stabiliser to the party for dousing internal tensions and pathing for peaceful resolutions at critical moments, hence, remains an unshaken, fully, legally and unquestionable member of the PDP with unwavering commitment.

The forum added: “Attempt at labeling such a political stabiliser as ” anti party ” is not only false but shameful, stressing that those behind the decision we’re neither recognised nor sanctioned by the legitimate organs of the party.

While in solidarity with the former HoRs member, the forum described Bature  as a resilient and passionate politician who stood by the party at times of serious crisis to avoid plunging it into more deeper chaos.

  • Anambra Police recover three-year-old girl from suspected female child trafficker

Anambra Police recover three-year-old girl from suspected female child trafficker

Anambra Police Command has recovered a three-year-old girl allegedly stolen from her parents in Nnobi, Idemili South local government area of the State.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga who disclosed this on Saturday, said the suspect, an apprentice to the victim’s family escaped arrest in Calabar, Cross River State, where she sold the child to another suspect now at large.

He however said the baby had since been safely reunited her with her parents, while efforts were on to arrest suspects connected to the abduction and trafficking of the child.

According to Ikenga: We wish to inform the public that operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, in the early hours of November 21, 2025, successfully recovered a stolen 3-year-old girl following a case transferred from Ogbaru Division, Atani, involving conspiracy, child stealing, and harbouring.

“The Operatives through sustained and intelligence-driven operations, rescued the child at Nnobi, Idemili South LGA, Anambra State, and has since safely reunited her with her parents.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the child was stolen by one Miss Chioma Anioma, an apprentice to the victim’s family.

“Upon realising that operatives were closing in on her, the suspect allegedly escaped arrest in Calabar, Cross River State, where the child had been sold to another suspect now on the run.

“In a bid to evade further Police pressure, Chioma abandoned the child at Nnobi and later contacted the victim’s parents to disclose the location.

“Meanwhile, intensive efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest all suspects connected to the criminal syndicate responsible for the abduction and trafficking of the child.”

  • Abducted Niger Catholic pupils, teachers rise to 303

Abducted Niger Catholic pupils, teachers rise to 303

The Bishop of the Catholic Kontagora Diocese, Bulus Dauwa Yohanna has said that the total number of victims abducted by suspected terrorists from the St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri in Agwarra local government area of Niger state is now 303 students and 12 teachers.

Yohanna, who is also Niger Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said this update was done after a final verification exercise and census was carried out.

According to him: “After we left the school at Papiri, we decided to make calls, do verification exercise and do further enquiries on those we had thought escaped successfully, only to discover that 88 more students were also captured after they tried to escape.

“Our attention was drawn to when some parents whose children we had thought escaped from the attack also came asking of their children. We became curious and that was when we did census and discovered that they were abducted.

“This now makes it 303 students (male and female) including 12 teachers (4 females and 8 males) bringing the total to number of abducted persons to 315.”

The Bishop said that the government and security are trying to play propaganda by saying that they had issued prior warnings to the school through a circular to shut down its boarding facilities stressing that neither the school nor Catholic Diocese recieved such circular.

He asked the government to stop shifting blames and using the circular as a way to paint the school as disobedient to government directives.

“I have just got back to the village this night after I visited the school where I also met with parents of the children to assure them that we are working with the government and Security agencies to see that our children are rescued and brought back safely but was gritted with what I term “propaganda” that the school was given a prior warning by the government through a circular.

“That is not true, we did not receive any circular, it must be an after thought and a way to shift blame. In the past, around 2022 when we heard of rumours of security challenge, we do not hesitate, we shutdown immediately. Is it when there is a circular from the government asking us to shutdown that we will now not obey?

“The school is owned by the Catholic Diocese and not by any individual. None of the Reverend Sisters travelled to Abuja as they alleged. Whoever made that misleading statement should know that it is a false allegation and should withdraw such or provide the proofs and evidences.

“We have asked the Education Secretary if he received a circular he said no; or if he was asked to send any to us, he said no. We asked if he was verbally informed, he also said no. Let them tell the world who they gave the circular to, or through what channel did they send it.

“We also asked the National Association of Private Schools, they did not get any such circular. They claimed the school was shutdown and reopened few days ago, that is also not true, we are law abiding”, he noted.

Yohanna further assured everyone that the school and the Catholic Diocese will continue to actively collaborate with security operatives, community leaders, government and relevant authorities for the safe and quick return of all abductees.
