UN Security Council adopts Trump’s plan for Gaza

The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution that endorsed a peace plan for Gaza put forward by United States President Donald Trump and a temporary international force in the enclave following two years of war.

Resolution 2803 (2025) received 13 votes in favour and none against, with permanent members China and Russia abstaining.

The text of the resolution welcomes the Comprehensive Plan announced by Trump on September 29.

The first phase of the 20-point plan led to the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel days later.

The resolution also welcomes the establishment of a Board of Peace (BoP) “as a transitional administration” in Gaza that will coordinate reconstruction efforts.

It authorizes the BoP to establish a temporary International Stabilisation Force (ISF) in Gaza “to deploy under unified command acceptable to the BoP”.

Countries will contribute personnel to the force “in close consultation and cooperation” with Egypt and Israel.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, after the vote said,

“Thank you for joining us in charting a new course in the Middle East for Israelis and Palestinians and all the people of the region alike”.

“Today’s resolution represents another significant step towards a stable Gaza that will be able to prosper and an environment that will allow Israel to live in security.”

He said the ISF “will stabilise the security environment, support the demilitarisation of Gaza, dismantle terrorist infrastructure, decommission weapons and maintain the safety of Palestinian civilians.”

Algerian Ambassador Amar Bendjama acknowledged the efforts undertaken by President Trump in advancing peace worldwide.

Bendjama, however, stressed that genuine peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved “without justice for the Palestinian people who have waited for decades for the establishment of their independent State.”

He noted that the text has received the support of Arab and Muslim countries and that “the Palestinian Authority at the highest level has openly welcomed the initiative”.

In explaining Russia’s decision to abstain, Amb. Vasily Nebenzya said the Council was in essence “giving its blessing to a U.S. initiative on the basis of Washington’s promises”.

The Russian diplomat added that the Council was “giving complete control over the Gaza Strip to the Board of Peace and the ISF, the modalities of which we know nothing about so far.”

  • Osun 2026: INEC urges political parties to conduct lawful primaries

Osun 2026: INEC urges political parties to conduct lawful primaries

Dr Mutiu Agboke, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun, has urged political parties in the state to conduct their primaries in accordance with the law.

Agboke, in a statement by INEC Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa, on Monday in Osogbo, said the conduct of party primaries in line with the law was important ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC has fixed Aug. 8, 2026 for the governorship election in the state.

The REC appealed to all registered political parties in the state to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Commission’s Guidelines and Regulations for the conduct of their primaries.

“The Commission emphasises the need for the conduct of free, fair and peaceful primary elections that reflect the will of the party members as a panacea for the reduction of pre-election litigations.

“We observed that primary elections have often been a source of pre-election litigations which can be avoided if parties follow the laid-down procedures and guidelines.

“INEC, therefore, urges all political parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in a transparent, democratic, and peaceful manner.

”All aspirants should be given equal opportunities to participate,” he said.

Agboke said that in line with the guidelines released by INEC National Headquarters, political parties’ primaries for the 2026 governorship election in the state are scheduled to hold between Nov. 24 and Dec. 15.

He said the Commission was prepared to provide necessary support and guidance to parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in accordance with the law.

“We call on all stakeholders, including security agencies, to support the Commission in its efforts to ensure peaceful and credible party primaries.

“INEC will continue to monitor the activities of political parties and take appropriate actions within the ambit of the law against any party that fails to comply with the electoral laws and regulations,” he said.

  • APC’s broadening coalition reflects Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity, unity – Shettima

APC’s broadening coalition reflects Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity, unity – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s broadening coalition reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity, competence and national unity.

Shettima made this known in Lokoja, when he formally received former governor of Kogi, Alhaji Idris Wada and other prominent politicians into the APC.

He said the decision of the “elder statesman and partner in building a stronger Nigeria,” to join the party was driven by national interest rather than personal interest.

“This is not a victory of one ego over another. What we are witnessing is an alignment with a broader national vision and a platform of stability,” he said.

The vice president described the APC as a political home where progressives converge to build a renewed nation.

Shettima, therefore, urged new entrants to see the party as a platform for service and development, particularly in Kogi State, where he pledged sustained peace and accelerated growth.

” We shall deepen peace in Kogi. We shall expand development in Kogi State. We shall uphold the promise of a renewed Nigeria.

” Because you have shown that when leaders choose peace, the people reap progress. The APC does not take your trust for granted,” the Vice-President said.

He also described the defection of former Kogi  governor,  Idris Wada, and other notable political figures into the APC as a confluence of progressives and a triumph of reason.

He hailed Tinubu for his deliberate and committed effort to build an inclusive and trustworthy political platform capable of attracting credible leaders from across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Shettima drew a symbolic connection between the city where the Niger and Benue Rivers meet and what he said was a merging of convictions for national renewal.

According to him, the movement reflects a growing shift toward political stability, unity and national alignment under the leadership of President Tinubu.

He commended Gov. Usman Ododo of Kogi for providing a calm strength, continuity and people-driven governance.

The Vice-President also commended the former Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi for ensuring a dignified and exemplary democratic transition.

“The joy of every democracy is the genuine cooperation between a predecessor and a successor. It is a relationship that must be built on patience and trust.

‘ Kogi has shown that this is possible even when it is most difficult,” Shettima said.

He stated that the cooperation between the two leaders in the confluence state stands as “a reassuring national example of political maturity.”

Earlier, governor Ododo, described the new members as men of value, character and integrity, who have joined the progressives family to serve the people.

He thanked President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their support at all times, pointing out that within two years of his administration, the President has visited the state three times.

“Sir, I believe that you will not be tired of our invitation. We are welcoming you, and we are behind you and to let you know that what is happening today, with the coming of our leader, His Excellency Capt. Idris Wada and others.

“Today, we are here not only to receive and welcome the decampees to the progressives family but to, once again, express our gratitude and appreciation to Mr. President for his leadership,  commitment to the unity, peace and prosperity of our dear nation, particularly, Kogi State.

“We are here again to appreciate our leaders and every other critical stakeholder of our dear state, who laid the foundation for us to continue with their good job.

‘ We are here again to appreciate all our progressives who support good governance and have resolved to join us today to ensure that we move Kogi State forward.”

Also, the National Chairman of APC, Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, said the National Working Committee of APC was in confluence state to rescue the state from the sinking People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“We are here to give a platform and to give a life jacket inside the ocean for people who are stranded inside the ocean in that ship called PDP.

‘Your Excellency, I’m pleased to present to you the former Governor of Kogi , His Excellency, retired Capt. Idris Wada, who is moving from the sinking ship to become a progressive.

“I also have Chief Sam Ranti Abenemi,  Imam Alfa, Idowu Ibekunle and the rest who have joined the progressive family today. I welcome you to the family of progressives.

”You have taken the wise choice in your political life,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors , Wada, said his decision to joined the APC was motivated by President Tinubu’s performance in areas of infrastructure development, economic reforms and social investment.

“The reasons for crossing over are numerous but there is no time for me to explain them to you.  APC is a progressives party and is leading Nigeria in the right direction. Mr President made a very bold decision in removing fuel subsidy.

“Initially, we all felt all kinds of pains but now, fuel price is dropping almost every month,  the exchange rate, which the President unified, has stabilised our currency.

‘ The naira is appreciating on a regular basis in the foreign exchange market, ” Wada said.

Other dignitaries who attended the grand reception include the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu; former Minister of State for FCT, Dr Ramatu Aliyu; Senator Smart Adeyemi;  Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative, Benjamin Kalu; Alhaji Ali Dalori  among others.

  • Delight, as food prices drop in Ogun, Oyo, Kwara

Delight, as food prices drop in Ogun, Oyo, Kwara

Food and agriculture stakeholders in Ogun, Oyo, and Kwara States have expressed delight at the drop in food prices, praising the Federal Government (FG) for its policies and interventions.

In Tuesday’s survey of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the respondents, however, cautioned that some loose ends needed to be tidied up to sustain the price reductions across the board.

At the Lafenwa, Kuto, and Olomore markets in Abeokuta, the survey revealed a significant drop in the prices of rice, beans, garri, groundnut oil, and yams.

It also showed that the prices of perishable items like peppers, onions, and tomatoes had dropped.

According to the survey, a ‘kongo’ of garri now sells for N500 as against N1,800 in August, while a bag of the commodity now costs N28,000, compared to N40,000 in August.

A 50kg bag of rice now sells for N53,000 from N68,000, while ‘Oloyin’ beans dropped from N70,000 to N60,000.

A 5-litre gallon of groundnut oil, which was sold for N16,000, now costs N13,000, while a 25-litre keg of King’s oil reduced from N70,000 to N66,000.

A medium basket of onions has dropped from N20,000 to N12,000, while a small basket of the same commodity has reduced from N10,000 to N5,000.

Similarly, a big bag of scotch bonnet pepper now goes for between N35,000 and N40,000, dropping from N60,000 and N65,000, respectively.

The small bucket of bonnet pepper, which previously sold for N15,000, now costs N6,000, just as a bag of tomatoes dropped from N70,000 to N50,000.

Meanwhile, six big tubers of yams, earlier sold between N17,000 and N20,000, now sell for N12,000, while medium sizes are sold between N4,000 and N6,000.

Some of the traders attributed the reduction to the recent decline in the exchange rate and reopening of land borders.

This, according to Mrs Sikirat Soyeye, a grain seller at Lafenwa market, has eased importation and improved the availability of food items, especially rice and groundnut oil.

“Our businesses have improved; since food items are now cheaper, people are now buying more.

“The reduction in the dollar rate and border reopening have really helped,” she said.

Soyeye, however, appealed to the government to sustain the stability of the naira, adding that traders now record higher sales and patronage.

At the Kuto Market, Mrs Tinuke Ayomide, a perishable goods seller, said the reduction in the prices of pepper and onions was due to the current harvest season of the items.

Ayomide, however, urged the government to strengthen security, particularly in the northern parts of the country where most food items originate, to ensure a steady reduction in commodity prices.

Similarly, a tomato seller at Olomore market, Mr Haruna Ibrahim, said the commodity recorded a slight price reduction, but compared with other items, it was still expensive.

Ibrahim also attributed the drop in perishable food prices to seasonal harvests.

A buyer, Mrs Ayomide Adedeji, expressed delight at the development, urging the government to sustain the trend through consistent policies.

“Food prices should not rise again, and the government must keep fuel prices stable.

“When the dollar comes down, things become cheaper, so the government must ensure exchange rate stability and continue to support local farmers,” she said.

The Ogun Secretary, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Abiodun Ogunjimi, said the current price reduction reflected a mix of seasonal harvests, reduced transport costs, and improved supply from farms and borders.

Ogunjimi, however, warned that without deliberate government policies, the gains might be temporary.

“To sustain this positive trend, the government should invest in local food production, reduce import duties on essential goods, and provide incentives for farmers.

“Our government should also look into improved storage facilities, rural infrastructure, and price monitoring systems to prevent future inflation and ensure food affordability for Nigerians,” Ogunjimi said.

Meanwhile, the Ogun Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Bolu Owotomo, said the reduction in food prices was due to effective government policies, even as the harvest season is ongoing.

According to Owotomo, the state government has intensified efforts to enhance food productivity and minimise post-harvest losses through various targeted initiatives and interventions.

He added that the state had done exceptionally well in the cassava industry and aquaculture sector, with thousands of farmers benefiting from capacity-building programmes.

The commissioner noted that the government had steadily expanded its input distribution to boost food productivity and was also still building processing facilities across the state.

“We’re not only stopping at providing processing centres, we are also linking our farmers to off-takers so that they won’t have to be the ones to be looking for markets themselves; we already have off-takers registered.

“It’s our joy that the government’s policies and interventions are having a positive impact on food prices in the state.

“Adequate state government interventions have really helped in the reduction of food prices,” said Owotomo.

In Ibadan, Prof. Alarudeen Aminu, a Reader in the Department of Economics, University of Ibadan, says the price reduction is largely driven by the nationwide harvest season.

He said food prices traditionally fall to their lowest during harvest periods across Nigeria’s agro-ecological zones.

“This year’s trend aligns with historical patterns, except in periods of drought, flood or other disruptions affecting food production,” he said.

He explained that increased local supply has forced imported food items to a downward readjustment.

“If there is excess supply, the price will fall to clear the market. That is what we are observing now,” he said.

The economist, however, stressed the need for coordinated government intervention to sustain the price reduction beyond the harvest period.

He said federal, state and local governments must invest more in domestic food production to stabilise prices.

According to him, expanding dry-season farming is critical as many farmers have already cultivated vegetables, tomatoes and early yam seedlings using FADAMA.

He urged governments to provide quality seedlings and launch radio and community campaigns to boost participation in off-season farming.

He also urged the governments to identify and support genuine farmers, particularly small-scale holders who supply the bulk of food consumed locally.

Aminu called for stronger rural security to encourage farmers who have abandoned farmlands due to attacks.

He emphasised that rural infrastructure, such as roads, bridges and basic amenities, must be prioritised, noting that such investment is largely the responsibility of the state and local governments.

He, therefore, recommended the revival of a structure similar to the defunct Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFFRI) and the Universal Basic Education model.

According to the economist, the structure is to be jointly funded by the federal and state governments.

However, a consumer, Mr Taiwo Ajebamidele, urged the FG to provide more storage and preservation facilities to help control post-harvest surplus and wastage.

“The government can also buy off the surplus harvest from farmers to save their loss now, and resell it off-season.

“Although foodstuffs, especially grains and cassava, are now surplus, the off-season time will come.

“However, with good storage and preservation, the preserved ones will be available for sale at cheap prices since they are from the government,” he said.

He also called on the government to reduce the pump price of petrol, which, in turn, would drop transportation costs.

The economy, he says, revolves around petrol.

A housewife, Mrs Mary Oguntade, said that while foodstuffs had become cheaper, people’s purchasing power was still weak.

According to Oguntade, though garri, beans, tomatoes and pepper are now selling at lower prices, they may still increase off-season.

She, however, said that the prices of fish, meat, eggs, chicken, palm oil and vegetable oil were still high.

Alhaja Aduke Adebimpe, a rice merchant at Bodija market, affirmed that the price of rice had crashed.

According to her, a bag of 50kg, which sold between N60,000 and N64,000 in October, now sells between N54,000 and N56,000 across various markets in Ibadan.

“The Indian rice flooded the Nigerian markets from the Benin Republic, pushing prices of both imported and local rice down sharply.

“Another factor in price reduction is the strengthening of the Naira against the Dollar and CFA, thus making dollar‑priced imports cheaper,” she said.

She advised that the duty waiver on the importation of rice be sustained to make rice sell as low as N10,000.

Read Also: Inflation eases further on declining food prices

A garri seller, Mrs Caroline Joseph, said the price of the commodity has dropped drastically as a bag of cassava, which sold between N10,000 and N15,000, now sells at N9,000.

Joseph said that a big bowl of garri, sold for N8,000, now sells at N4,000.

She, however, cautioned that the price reduction was seasonal, explaining that with the incoming dry season, the price of garri and cassava flour would increase again.

A consumer, Mr Kabir Alebiosu, said that while the prices of rice, beans, and garri had reduced, there was no money to buy other necessary things to cook the foodstuffs.

Alebiosu said that the people’s purchasing power was still low; therefore, urging the government to do more to improve economic policies.

This, he said, would help the civil servants to, at least, feed their families.

In Ilorin, the Iyaloja-General of Kwara, Alhaja Muhibat Olumon, while commending the government, pledged continuous support to the FG for stabilising the prices of food commodities.

She explained that, as the leader of marketers in Kwara, her team hold regular meetings with middlemen across the state to prevent the inflation of food commodities.

According to her, the market must be sanitised of traders who take advantage of people by inflating prices and coming around to blame the government.

She pledged, on behalf of other traders, to be faithful in their businesses and to remain their brothers’ keeper.

The Public Relations Officer, Tomatoes Dealers Association in Kwara, Mr Nurudeen Alowonle, told NAN that a bag of tomatoes sells between N9,000 and N10,000.

According to him, a 25kg bag of bell pepper (atarodo) now sells between N7,000 and N10,000 in Ilorin.

The survey revealed that a bag of rice has dropped from N70,000 in October to N54,000.

A bag of Elubo (New), which sold for N140,000 in the last two months, now sells for N120,000, while the (Old) Elubo sells for N160,000.

Whether you’re after playful chats or deeper intimacy, you should ensure you have a detailed profile outlining your interests and intentions to avoid mismatches.

    Start Conversations Softly

  • Council raises concerns over MAN conversion to university

Council raises concerns over MAN conversion to university

The Governing Council of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, has cautioned that the ongoing push to convert the institution into a university could derail decades of specialised maritime capacity development it offers the industry and jeopardise its statutory five per cent funding from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The council chairman, MAN, Kehinde Akinola, at a media parley, said the proposal threatens the Academy’s international standing, stressing that MAN’s specialised mandate remains critical to the Federal Government’s Marine and Blue Economy agenda.

Akinola warned that replacing the Academy with the proposed University of Maritime Studies would “distort its specialised mandate,” weaken its regimented cadet training system and threaten long-standing international collaborations.

Besides, he argued that such a conversion would immediately strip MAN of access to the statutory five per cent NIMASA revenue allocation, since the NIMASA Act recognises only the Maritime Academy of Nigeria as a beneficiary.

“This would create serious operational challenges for an institution that relies heavily on these funds to maintain its extensive training facilities and infrastructure,” the Council chairman warned.

Recall that MAN Oron, established in 1977 with technical support from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), was designed as a specialised maritime training institution for cadets, shipboard officers and maritime managers.

Akinola further explained that the institution’s enabling Act—Cap M3 LFN 2010, already empowers the Academy to run advanced programmes “without limitation on the type or level of certificates awarded,” aligning it with global maritime training standards.

While acknowledging that youths from Oron Local Government have the right to seek development for the community, Akinola said the calls for a university should not come at the cost of destabilising a national institution serving the entire maritime sector. He argued that national maritime priorities must take precedence over local interests.

He also expressed concern over recent actions by the Oron Youth Movement (OYOM), noting that protests, tensions and escalating hostility around the conversion debate were affecting the Academy’s stability, warning that such activities “pose risks to the Academy’s smooth operations and the policy direction of the Federal Government.”

Highlighting progress under the current administration, Akinola said President Bola Tinubu has positioned MAN as a key driver of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry’s manpower development agenda.

Since the Governing Council’s inauguration in October 2024, he said the Academy has developed a “five-year strategic plan” aligned with national blue economy goals and secured approval for a Conditions of Service document—its first in 48 years.

He disclosed that a bill amending the UMSO Act to reaffirm MAN’s status and empower it to award degrees, similar to the Nigerian Defence Academy and the Police Academy, has already passed its first reading at the National Assembly.

Akinola also referenced MAN’s recent support to host communities, including restoring electricity to Oron after eight years and installing solar-powered streetlights as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

Citing global examples, he pointed to specialised maritime academies such as the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, and Kenya’s Bandari Maritime Academy, all of which award degrees while maintaining regimented training systems—proof, he said, that the Academy does not need to be converted into a university to attain degree-awarding status.

“We will not be intimidated or cowed by any group attempting to appropriate a national asset for narrow interests,” he reiterated, insisting that the Governing Council remains committed to safeguarding the Academy’s mandate.

These concerns align with the position of the Alumni Association of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO), which in July 2025 wrote an open letter to President Bola Tinubu urging him to preserve the Academy’s specialised status.

In the letter signed by its President, Emmanuel Maiguwa, AMANO cautioned that converting MAN to a university under the Ministry of Education would violate IMO regulations and jeopardise Nigeria’s compliance with the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention.

“The Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN Oron, is a strategically vital institution, purpose-built to deliver specialised training in accordance with global maritime standards. We respectfully express concern over the proposed conversion of the Academy into a conventional university under the Ministry of Education. This move, while perhaps well-intentioned, poses significant risks,” the letter to President Tinubu read in part.

It listed the risks to include the loss of international accreditation, particularly under IMO and STCW requirements; the dilution of training quality, stressing that maritime education requires simulators, specialised facilities and technical expertise that a generalised university curriculum may be unable to sustain; reduced global competitiveness, as weakening MAN’s technical focus would likely disadvantage Nigerian cadets seeking international maritime placements and career opportunities and potential national security risks considering that maritime security and port operations require precision-trained personnel, which specialised institutions like MAN Oron are critical to sustaining such competencies.

They also noted that Nigeria already has a Maritime University in Okerenkoko, one that has struggled outside sector-specific oversight, and that several conventional universities already offer maritime-related degrees under the Ministry of Education.

The Oron community had celebrated in 2021 when both chambers of the National Assembly passed a bill upgrading MAN to a university, a victory after 40 years of agitation, later gazetted in May 2023.

  • How Lumberjack redefines Nigeria’s online entertainment scene

How Lumberjack redefines Nigeria’s online entertainment scene

In Nigeria’s fast-growing streaming scene, one creator continues to rise with a mix of humour, chaos, and unfiltered truth. Lumberjack has turned the spontaneity of everyday life into performance, building a devoted audience that sees both laughter and honesty in his world.

Born in Sagamu but raised in Warri, Lumberjack’s story begins in a city known for its sharp wit and fearless energy. “Warri shaped everything about me,” he says. “How I talk, how I see things, how I react. Growing up there teaches you to face life with no fear. We no dey fear for Warri. Even with all the wahala, peace must come.” That blend of resilience and community spirit became the foundation of his personality. In 2024, he moved to Lagos, ready for a bigger stage.

His content journey started long before the move. In 2020, he joined TikTok, testing out short videos that carried his signature “Warri talk.” “At first, I was just carrying a stick, talking about trending topics. I’d drag people playfully, talk about celebrities, and mix it with street slang. People loved it. They laughed, they shared, and it brought engagement.”

Over time, he realised there was more to explore. Streaming offered something different—a space to be himself in real time. “I transformed that energy into live streaming,” he says. “At first, it was rough. I’d just sit there mixing coconut and groundnut, eating bread and Coke, shouting, playing, and connecting with people. But that’s where I found my rhythm.”

What sets his streams apart is how he blends chaos with calm, humour with honesty. “Everything about me is entertainment,” he explains.

“Violence and peace. You’ll see drama, you’ll see jokes, you’ll see joy. I just bring vibes.” His process is natural, often unscripted.

“Sometimes I watch videos, and from there, something meaningful comes out. Something relatable, like something I’ve faced before.” This organic approach gives his content a raw, unpredictable edge that keeps people watching.

“Still, the work comes with pressure. “Pressure is the biggest challenge,” he admits. “People always compare you. They say, ‘See your mate.’ That thing gets to you sometimes.

“Then there’s bad network, hate, all of that. But I keep going.” Despite the noise, Lumberjack stays grounded in authenticity. “No difference,” he says.

“The way I am in real life is how I am online. Funny, angry, calm, all at once. I’m just real. I’m organic.”

Beyond the screen, he’s a lover of football and good energy, traits that mirror the personality his fans connect with. Looking ahead, his vision is clear. “Myself times ten,” he says with a grin. “Not just Lagos or Warri, but worldwide.” For Lumberjack, streaming is more than entertainment.

It is a mirror of his journey, a reflection of how laughter, honesty, and grit can turn everyday struggle into something worth watching.

  • German Chamber to export skilled Nigerians for training

German Chamber to export skilled Nigerians for training

The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Giessen-Friedberg, Germany, is set to migrate 18 young Nigerians for training in the hospitality sector.

Speaking with newsmen, the German Consul General, Lagos, Daniel Krull, described the selection as a reaffirmation of its commitment to expanding vocational training infrastructure and institutional partnerships across Nigeria in partnership with the federal government.

Krull said about 18 selected groups of young Nigerians were unveiled in Lagos after successfully passing the selection process for dual vocational training under the Africa Skills 4 Germany initiative.

He explained that the pilot project, African Skills 4 Germany (AS4G), funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), aims to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and apprentices in Germany in the long term.

Krull also said that there is a growing ageing population in Germany, underscoring the importance of opening the country’s doors for legal migration of young people to strengthen their workforce.

“Germany has a fast-ageing population, many people go on pension, and so there’s a growing need for a younger workforce. Nigeria, at the same time, has a fast-growing population, they’re a very young population that is very talented, ambitious, and seeking to find employment and having trouble doing so.

“So it is kind of natural to explore how these two countries can join forces and open new opportunities for legal migrations for Nigerians to Germany. It’s not only about skills development; it’s also about personality development that will decide on the future careers of these young Nigerians, who will later on work in Germany and Dubai and Lagos,” he said.

He explained that the selected young Nigerians will undergo language training and cultural education to prepare well before the trip to Germany by next summer.

“We have this pilot project running here where participants have been selected in a very serious process, and they now get their skills, language training, they get cultural onboarding, so they come well prepared to Germany next summer,” he said.

He added that the outcome of this pilot phase will determine the sustainability of the program, saying that the country might require skills in another area in the future.

The Project Lead for the African Skills for Germany project within the Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCI), Andreas Reckert, stated that over 350 applicants were screened to 18 who were selected, saying they scaled through the language aptitude, written test, and oral interview.

“So the students don’t pay anything for the language courses, for the cultural training, or for the hospitality-specific training. They only need to pay with their time, skills, and enthusiasm, and they have to cover the flight costs and the travel costs. But everything else will be covered by the German companies,” he said.

He stressed that the selected young Nigerians will be paid a salary that can cover their expenses, rent, and groceries during their training voyages.

“That is very specific to Germany, and that is why it’s so attractive for young Nigerians, because they don’t have to have a credit or outside support structures. Within the training, they earn money because they’re working hard, so they’re earning money.

“So at the beginning, it’s about 1,000 euros. And then once they are fully trained, of course, they are eligible for raises. And that, of course, depends on the specific companies; they are willing to raise it to 2,000 or 2,500 euros, which is an absolute possibility,” he said.

Human resource consultant and German language instructor, Bolade Niyi-Taiwo, said the candidates have completed the first phase and will finish the second phase of the training by the end of November.

“The candidates started their training on August 18, and the first stage of the program ended in October, where they all passed with flying colours. Now we are in the second stage of the program, which will end in November. This pilot project is going to set the stage for an excellent relationship between Germany and Nigeria,” she said.

One of the candidates, Afolashade Adedeji, a chemistry teacher, expressed delight at being selected, saying she will give her best to finish with a good performance.

“I was a chemistry teacher, and I got to know about this program online. I decided to take a leap of faith and try, and when I saw the instructions, I submitted and got shortlisted. I see myself as a way opener for others who are coming because my performance will determine those who will come next, so I am giving it my all,” she said.
