Nigerian professionals in Europe urge EU to restrain Trump, call for strategic security support

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) has appealed to leaders of the European Union (EU) to restrain US President Donald Trump following his recent threats of military action against Nigeria and his decision to redesignate the country as a “country of particular concern” over alleged religious persecution.

In an electronic statement issued from Paris on Thursday, the association urged the EU to adopt a balanced diplomatic posture and to strengthen its partnership with Nigeria through strategic support in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of insecurity.

The group described Trump’s remarks as “provocative and dangerous,” warning that such rhetoric could inflame tensions, embolden extremist groups, and undermine the steady progress Nigeria has made in counterterrorism and economic reform.

A statement signed by Dr. Livinus Chukwuemeka Nwosu, ANPE President, and Mrs Aisha M. Bello, a security expert and secretary of the group, urged European leaders to “act with wisdom and restraint” by discouraging any unilateral US action that could destabilise the West African region.

“We call on the European Union, as a global voice of balance and diplomacy, to restrain President Trump from any hostile action or policy escalation against Nigeria. Our country needs constructive engagement, not coercion. The international community should be supporting Nigeria’s security and democratic consolidation, not threatening it,” the statement reads.

The association emphasised that Nigeria’s religious diversity has long been a source of cultural richness, not division, and that framing the country’s security challenges as religious persecution was both misleading and counterproductive.

According to ANPE, terrorism, insurgency, and banditry in Nigeria have affected Muslims and Christians alike, particularly in the country’s northern and central regions.

“The lives of every Nigerian, regardless of faith or ethnicity, are sacred. We reject any narrative that weaponises religion to justify foreign hostility or intervention,” the statement added.

The group urged the EU to back Nigeria’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign through arms supply, intelligence sharing, and joint training programmes that would help strengthen local security institutions.

ANPE said such cooperation should be guided by mutual respect and a shared commitment to peace, while avoiding any direct interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs.

The statement also highlighted positive developments in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, which the group said reflected the country’s resilience and reform-driven progress.

ANPE assured European investors that their interests remain secure, pointing to increased transparency in the regulatory environment and renewed investor confidence under the current administration.

“European partners investing in Nigeria’s energy sector should have no fear. The government is consolidating reforms to enhance accountability, strengthen local content, and attract long-term investment. Nigeria’s economic revival depends on stable global partnerships, not geopolitical tension,” the association said.

ANPE described Trump’s recent designation and threats as an “unhelpful distraction” that risks reversing hard-won gains in regional peacebuilding and counterinsurgency.

It noted that Nigeria has been working closely with its neighbours, including Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, to suppress terrorism across the Lake Chad Basin, while maintaining robust diplomatic relations with Western allies.

The association commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for maintaining focus on national security, infrastructure, and energy development despite global pressures, urging Nigerians not to be swayed by external provocations.

“We have a duty to defend our sovereignty and dignity. President Tinubu’s government is building institutions that can protect citizens and restore lasting peace,” the group added.

The statement concluded with a call for the EU to engage both Washington and Abuja in sustained dialogue to prevent escalation and to channel global cooperation toward stabilising West Africa.

“Europe has always been a trusted partner to Nigeria. We are confident that the EU’s leadership will help ensure that diplomacy, not division, guides the global response to Nigeria’s internal challenges. Together, we can defeat terrorism and preserve peace — but only through respect, dialogue, and partnership,” the association said.

Stronger systems, partnerships needed for women’s financial empowerment’

Founder of Kudimata Nigeria Limited, Kathleen Erhimu, has called for stronger systems and partnerships to deepen women’s financial empowerment across Nigeria.

‎She described financial literacy as a “lifeline, not a luxury.”

‎She spoke at the 25th National Council on Women Affairs held in Benin City, Edo State.

The theme was: “Strengthening systems and deepening social impact: Advancing the Renewed Hope Social Agenda for women, children, the family, and vulnerable groups.”

‎Erhimu commended the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, FSI, for her visionary leadership in repositioning the ministry and driving a results-oriented agenda for women and families.

‎“Under the visionary leadership of the Honourable Minister, we have seen an intentional drive to move from programs to impact, and from talk to transformation.

‎”She has redefined what it means to lead with compassion, precision, and purpose,” she said.

‎Highlighting Kudimata’s mission and achievements, Erhimu noted that the organisation has trained over 1.4 million women and youths in financial literacy and business fundamentals.

‎These include 250,000 women through the EmpowerHER Initiative, 30,000 certified entrepreneurs, and 7,800 professionals equipped with leadership and management skills.

‎Kudimata has also facilitated the registration of over 30,000 small businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) at a 50 per cent discount, empowered 1,800 startups with funds and equipment, and introduced financial education in more than 12 schools across Nigeria.

‎According to Erhimu, such initiatives are central to the vision of inclusive development championed by the Ministry of Women Affairs.

‎“When women are financially included, families are stronger, communities are safer, and nations are richer,” she stated.

‎‎She urged stakeholders to view women’s empowerment not as charity, but as capacity-building, which is a critical tool for sustainable development and national progress.

‎“The real social impact begins when every woman, no matter her background, can look at her life and say, ‘I am not just surviving; I am thriving,’” she added.

‎Erhimu reaffirmed Kudimata’s commitment to advancing the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Social Agenda through strategic collaborations that expand access to financial education, entrepreneurship support, and social inclusion.

FG pays N18bn insurance to boost troops’ welfare

The federal government has intensified welfare reforms for serving and retired military personnel, with the payment of ₦18 billion in Group Life Insurance benefits and the establishment of a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre.

Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru announced this during a press conference on the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Badaru said the welfare initiatives formed part of the government’s “Soldier First” policy, aimed at improving morale, living conditions, and medical care for personnel and their families.

“Those who defend our nation deserve not only our gratitude but our concrete support,” he said.

According to him, the new veterans’ data bank would ensure efficient management of veteran affairs, while the call centre would provide direct support to retired officers and families of fallen heroes.

He also announced plans to review the Nigerian Legion Act to create a Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) that would unify veterans’ welfare and advocacy efforts nationwide.

Gridlock: CCECC commences remedial work on Effurun–Sapele road

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has commenced remedial works on the Effurun–Sapele section of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Highway, currently under reconstruction by the Delta state government.

The intervention follows a directive by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and a follow-up inspection visit by the State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, on Monday.

Izeze’s visit came in response to mounting complaints from motorists and residents over the traffic congestion and hardship caused by the ongoing reconstruction.

Speaking during the inspection tour, which covered the stretch from Effurun Roundabout through Mercy Land to Ohore Junction, the Commissioner said the remedial work was aimed at easing traffic flow and providing temporary relief to commuters while construction continues.

“This administration, under Governor Oborevwori, is determined to address the pains of our people promptly. Even as we work toward a permanent fix, we are taking immediate steps to make the road motorable again,” Izeze stated.

He explained that the temporary intervention aligned with the governor’s MORE Agenda and the broader Renewed Hope vision of the state administration, which prioritises infrastructural renewal and citizen welfare.

The Commissioner acknowledged the difficulties faced by road users in recent years, assuring them that the completed project would significantly improve mobility, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic activities across the region.

According to him, the 10-kilometre project spanning five kilometres on each lane features an 8.8-metre-wide carriageway, an upgrade from the standard 7.3 metres.

He noted that the project is expected to be completed within 12 months.

“When completed, this will stand as another landmark achievement for the state, enhancing trade, transportation, and community life,” he added.

Governor Oborevwori had earlier, on October 14, 2025, officially flagged off the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Highway, a route long described by residents and transporters as a nightmare due to its deteriorated state.

The commencement of remedial work by CCECC has been widely welcomed by motorists, signalling the government’s responsiveness to public concerns.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Works has pledged to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the temporary measures effectively reduce gridlock while full reconstruction progresses.

Tacha said, “We faced a nine-hour storm that disrupted everything. The rain poured so heavily that our screens, monitors, and branding fell apart. The wind scattered the setup, and we had to rebuild the venue from scratch mid-event.

“On top of that, we experienced multiple power outages during the 24-hour attempt. The lights went off three or four times, but I refused to stop. My team turned on their phone flashlights, and I kept doing makeovers in the dark.

Oyetola lauds dockworkers’ role in maritime growth

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has lauded the invaluable contributions of Nigerian dockworkers to the nation’s maritime growth, pledging the Federal Government’s commitment to improving their welfare and ensuring safer working conditions across the ports.

Oyetola made the pledge in Lagos during the 2025 Day of the Dockworker celebration, organised by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC).

Themed “Safe Port, Safe Ship,” the event highlighted the importance of dockworkers to the sustainability of port operations and Nigeria’s expanding blue economy.

Represented by the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Oyetola described dockworkers as the backbone of the maritime industry whose efforts power the nation’s trade and economic activities.

According to him, “Today reminds us that our dockworkers are vital to creating a maritime industry where safety is assured and productivity increases. As dockworkers, you are the first link in the trade chain that fuels our economy and turns the potential of the blue economy into real national growth.”

The minister disclosed that the Federal Government, through NIMASA, has initiated several safety and capacity-building programmes, including the provision of modern protective equipment for dockworkers and riverine transport operators, enhanced safety training, and improved emergency response mechanisms.

“Through NIMASA, we are enhancing safety training, improving emergency response capabilities, and enhancing professional development schemes,” he added.

In his remarks, the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu, applauded the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and its agencies for their continuous commitment to dockworkers’ welfare.

He said, “It is a great honour to join all dockworkers in celebrating the 3rd edition of Dockworkers Day 2025. On behalf of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), I sincerely thank NIMASA, terminal operators, stevedores, and all maritime stakeholders for hosting this event and recognising the vital role of dockworkers in sustaining our nation’s maritime industry.”

Bunu further commended Oyetola for his “remarkable efforts in revitalising Nigeria’s maritime sector” and also appreciated the Minister of Labour and Employment for his “steadfast commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerian workers.”

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammadu Dingyadi, the Director of Productivity, Measurement and Labour Standards, Mr. Emmanuel Igbinosun, urged stakeholders to maintain a safe work environment and ensure fair remuneration for dockworkers in line with international labour standards.

“All stakeholders must remain committed to the ideals of a safe work environment and appropriate remuneration for dockworkers in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards,” he stated.

Representatives from the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Nigerian Association of Stevedoring Operators (NASO), and the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) also pledged continued collaboration towards ensuring safer and fairer working conditions for dockworkers.

Organised annually by NIMASA in collaboration with NPA and NSC, Dockworkers’ Day is an event dedicated to recognising the vital role of dockworkers in port operations and promoting awareness of their safety, rights, and welfare within Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Ships loaded with petrol, food, others arrive Lagos ports

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Wednesday said that 20 ships at the Lagos ports were discharging petroleum products and food items at Apapa, Tincan and Lekki Ports.

The NPA made this known in its publication, `Shipping Position’, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

It listed the contents of the ship as frozen fish, petrol, general cargo, containers, bulk sugar, buckwheat, bulk fertilizer, bulk urea, bulk gas and bulk gypsum.

The authority said that two other ships had arrived the ports, waiting to berth with bulk wheat and containers.

According to the NPA, 20 other ships with petroleum products, food items and other goods, are being expected at the Lagos ports complex, from Nov. 12 to Nov. 14.

  • Reps to investigate diversion of containers, excise duty leakages

Reps to investigate diversion of containers, excise duty leakages

The House of Representatives said it would investigate infractions and the diversion of containers, excise duties leakages, temporary importation irregularities and misuse of quota on importation of essential commodities in the country, leading to loss of revenue by the Nigerian government.

Adopting a motion sponsored by the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, Hassan Shehu Hussain (NNPP, Kano), the House directed the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service to beam the agency’s searchlight on Customs officers involved in the transfers and escorting of containers on Bond through the use of technology to ensure every container’s duty is collected and accounted for to its final destination.

Hussain told the parliament that the creation of Bonded Terminals and Fast-track Warehouses was aimed at decongesting the ports and facilitating trade, thereby making the ports more user-friendly and boosting revenue for the Federal Government.

According to him, activities of some unscrupulous Bonded Terminals/Warehouses across the country have been detrimental to the economy and pose a security threat to the nation.

He alleged that containers meant to be transferred from mother ports under Nigeria Customs Service escorts with bond coverage for the value of the said containers are diverted before reaching their final destination, as the contents of such containers are unknown, and may contain dangerous drugs, such as tramadol, or arms and ammunition that could destroy the nation.

He stressed that it is the policy of the Nigerian Government to grant tax or excise duty holidays to newly established factories and industries, typically for a three-year grace period before excise duties are collected.

He maintained that some of these factories and industries abuse this largesse and continually evade paying excise duties, while in some cases, the collection of excise duties is done manually, leading to improper assessments and inadequate collections.

He said, “Another source of substantial revenue loss to the Federation account is through Temporal Importation (TI), an arrangement that supports investors to bring in vessels, aircraft, and other major equipment for a specified period without paying customs duties, provided a cash-backed bond with banks for the duration applied for is deposited.

“Unfortunately, many organisations with TI have exceeded their bond periods, and these bonds remain undischarged into the Federal Government’s account, resulting in unpaid duties.

“Another cause of revenue losses is due to the overshooting of import quotas for sugar and other essential commodities to supplement local production shortfalls, which were doubled without proper government approval. Additionally, the repeated recycling of these quotas has resulted in losses amounting to billions of Naira that should have accrued into the Federation account.

  • Why effective port state control critical to global maritime safety, by NIMASA

Why effective port state control critical to global maritime safety, by NIMASA

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reiterated that effective Port State Control (PSC) remains one of the strongest mechanisms for ensuring global maritime safety, eliminating substandard vessels, and maintaining environmental protection standards across international waters.

NIMASA’s Director-General, Dayo Mobereola, stated this in Lagos at a five-day Regional Train-the-Trainer Workshop on Port State Control for Member States of the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), supported by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Mobereola, who was represented by the agency’s Executive Director, Operations, Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi emphasised that the success of Port State Control depends largely on the quality and professionalism of those who implement it.

He said, “Effective Port State Control is one of the most potent tools for ensuring global safety and maintaining environmental standards in shipping.

“Your presence here demonstrates our collective resolve to strengthen efficient maritime governance, improve safety standards, and enhance environmental protection across West and Central Africa.”

The NIMASA boss noted that the workshop reflects Africa’s shared commitment to safer, cleaner, and more efficient shipping, commending the IMO, Abuja MoU Secretariat, and other technical partners for their continued support in building capacity and promoting regional cooperation.

Delivering a goodwill message, Captain Ahmed Sewelam, the representative of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), reaffirmed the organisation’s strong commitment to supporting member states through its technical cooperation programmes to strengthen effective and harmonised Port State Control regimes globally.

“Effective regional cooperation and harmonised PSC practices are essential to eliminate substandard shipping and promote consistency across the region,” he said.

He explained that the workshop provides an opportunity for delegates to enhance their collective capacity as Port States, with discussions covering inspection procedures, reporting, and performance improvement strategies.

“Together, we can strengthen Port State Control implementation and advance maritime safety and sustainability in the region,” he added.

Also speaking, the Secretary-General of the Abuja MoU, Captain Sunday Umoren, reiterated that capacity building remains a top priority of the organisation, noting that effective Flag State control directly influences the quality of Port State Control operations.

“We must continue to build capacity, strengthen cooperation, and share experiences to ensure that our region maintains high standards of maritime safety and compliance,” Umoren stated.

The five-day workshop, which brought together delegates from 22 countries across West and Central Africa, seeks to deepen regional capacity, harmonise inspection procedures, and improve compliance with international maritime conventions under the Abuja MoU framework.

The initiative represents another milestone in NIMASA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime safety, promote environmental protection, and consolidate the country’s leadership role in advancing regional maritime development.
