Chelsea agree to sell Ziyech to Galatasaray

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sell winger Hakim Ziyech to Galatasaray.

The Morocco international is now expected to undergo a medical with the Turkish Super Lig club.

The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and has previously seen moves to Paris St-Germain and Saudi Pro League club, Al Nassr, fall through.

Ziyech has made 107 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions since joining them in 2020 for £33.3m.

The former Ajax player was an unused substitute during the Blues Champions League triumph in 2021 and was a key member of the Morocco side that became the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals at Qatar 2022.

However, he has become a peripheral figure at Chelsea amid a significant outlay on players totalling around £900m since American investor Todd Boehly and his Clearlake consortium took over in May 2022.

Ziyech was not involved in Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA earlier this summer and he was also absent from their matchday squad for their 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the weekend, having not been given a squad number for the new Premier League season.

England reach first Women’s World Cup final

England reached the Women’s World Cup final for the first time as they spoiled co-hosts Australia’s party on a historic evening in Sydney.

Silencing a sell-out crowd at Stadium Australia, the Lionesses became the first English side since 1966 to reach the final on the world stage.

It caps a sensational two years under manager Sarina Wiegman as England, crowned European champions for the first time last year on home soil, showed their superiority and know-how to see off an Australia side spurred on by a nation who have been inspired by the Matildas’ success.

Ella Toone gave England the lead in the first half with a superb first-time strike which sailed into the top corner.

The Lionesses controlled proceedings until the second half when Australia threw everything at them and star striker Sam Kerr – starting her first match of the tournament – struck a 25-yard stunner over goalkeeper Mary Earps’ head to make it 1-1.

But England, as they so often do, found a way back into the game when Lauren Hemp pounced on a defensive error to restore their lead, before Alessia Russo made sure of victory late on to set up a final with Spain on Sunday.

UNICAL VC seeks more police collaboration on campus security

Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar (UNICAL), has appealed to the Cross River Police Command for more collaboration for effective policing of the institution.

Obi made the appeal when she led UNICAL’s management team on a courtesy visit to CP Gyogen Grima,  Commissioner of Police, Cross River Command in his office.

The vice-chancellor said the security partnership that existed between the University and the State Police Command had been vibrant, fruitful, and rewarding, but she would like it taken to a higher level.

“While I acknowledge that the command is already overtaxed and working very hard, I implore it through the office of the commissioner of police to do all within its reach to ensure that the bond is not broken.

“I also wish to thank the command that has, over the years, worked tirelessly in collaboration with the Internal Security Unit of the institution to enforce peace and maintain order on campus,” Obi added.

Noting that his men were not sleeping but working very hard, the commissioner of police called on members of the public with valuable information on criminal activities and hideouts in the state, not to hesitate to approach the Command.

  • Flood disaster: Over 25,000 birds perish in Anambra multi-million naira farm

Flood disaster: Over 25,000 birds perish in Anambra multi-million naira farm

No fewer than 25, 000 birds have been destroyed at a multi-million naira automated Matucci Farms Limited located at Agbobo Umuoga Ossomala community in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra state, following flash flood disaster which affected the property.

The disaster, which resulted in shutting down the company, also adversely affected potato farms, fish worth several millions of naira in the ponds and other crop sections.

The proprietor of Matuuci Farms Limited, Dr Patrick Sule-Ugboma, who took newsmen around some of the facility on Wednesday, said no fewer than 400 workers in the company have been directed to stop work.

Communities in the Ogbaru area of Anambra living along the River Niger coastline often experience flooding.

Sule-Ugboma said his company has lost a fortune due to the flood disaster that affected the farm sitting on 20 hectares of land.

He said: “We have lost more than 25,000 poultry birds, and fish in our ponds worth several millions of naira and numerous other properties worth several millions of naira were destroyed by the flood.”

According to Sule-Ugboma, the flood has equally affected some bridges on the Onitsha-Ndoni road, especially the bridge at Umunnakwo.

It would be recalled that the collapse of the same Umunnakwo Bridge in 2022 resulted in a boat mishap which claimed many lives.

Sule-Ugboma noted that the collapse of bridges on Ogbaru-Ndoni road poses a serious danger to residents and other road users travelling from Ogwuikpele to neighbouring communities who now resort to crossing the river by wooden boats.

He used the medium to appeal to both Anambra and Federal governments to urgently come to the rescue of Ogbaru communities.

He said: “I am calling on Governor Charles Soludo to look into the plights of our people especially with the menace of perennial flooding hitting Ogbaru communities again.

”I also called on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to consider the construction of the Onitsha-Ndoni road now in a deplorable state.”

Sule-Ugboma regretted that in spite of enormous agricultural and other economic activities in the area, enough was yet to be done in the provision of road infrastructure in the Ogbaru, Delta, Imo and Rivers corridors.

Sule-Ugboma said: “Agriculture is the mainstay of Ogbaru communities as well as communities in Delta, Imo and Rivers and inspires their contributions to our economy the people have been subjected to unduly neglect by successive state and Federal Governments.”

Tricyclist arrested for assaulting 8-year-old daughter in Anambra

A commercial tricyclist has been arrested for allegedly beating his 8-year-old daughter to a coma in Ifite, Awka South local government area of Anambra state.

The suspect, Chinedu Adim from Lokpa in Abia state, a father of two kids and reportedly abandoned by his wife, was said to have used hard substances to beat the daughter.

He, however, denied the allegations during interrogation, describing the daughter’s condition as spiritual.

Chinedu said: “I was formerly a member of Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) before I started driving Keke. We married twelve years ago with 2 kids, a girl and a boy, 8 and 6 years old.

“My wife left me 8 years ago after my shop got burnt. My kids were suffering in the village and I had to pick them up five years ago.

He further stated: “My daughter woke up one morning and I observed Injuries all over her body while I was bathing her. I asked her and she said she woke up to see lines on her body. I took her to the hospital where she was treated.

“The second time, she said she fell on the tiles and sustained injuries on the head. Some things she does appear strange to me. Sometimes I wake up at midnight and won’t see her. I said this is not ordinary and took her to church for deliverance.

“The third time I came back to drop food for her, I was told she was rushed to the hospital. She was in a coma throughout yesterday.”

Reacting to the incident, the state commissioner for women and social welfare, Ify Obinabo said the report she got said the suspect beat the victim to a coma, describing his narration as folk tales.

She said, “The girl has been in the hospital since yesterday. The father beat her to a stupor, claiming she was beaten in the dream. He had thought she would die so as to cover his actions.

“You know when men are abandoned by their wives, they tend to transfer aggression on their innocent children and forget that their blood is running in them.

“We’re not saying that parents should not flog their kids as a way of correcting them. But you beat them according to their age. That’s why the adage says, “use one hand and beat a child and use the other to draw him back.”

While assuring adequate medical attention for the victim to ensure she survived, Obinabo said the suspect would be handed over to the police for further interrogation and prosecution.
