    Victony bags engineering degree

Singer Anthony Ebuka Victor aka Victony has bagged a degree in Petroleum Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Upon completion of his final examinations, the fast-rising act in a celebratory mood announced his educational feat.

He shared the news with his fans and followers with a photo of his passing-out shirt which had inscriptions and signatures of his colleagues and others that joined to celebrate his graduation.

    “Engineer ebelebe 1.” he tweeted.

While on his Instagram page, he stated: “Clear road for the latest engineer.”

The ‘Soweto’ crooner had updated fans about his final examinations in a tweet.

“Last papers today. Me & my niggas graduating a real big W,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, after announcing the completion of his degree examination, Victony shared a throwback photo with course mates during their freshman year. And another right after his accident that confined him to a wheelchair, with his colleagues in the lecture hall.

The songster captioned these photos: “Evidenceeeee.”

A few years ago, the singer-cum-engineer in an interview spoke about when he began his journey as a singer along with having to balance studies with his successful musical career.

“I started music professionally in 2016. I started off as a rapper on SoundCloud. Where I dropped freestyles and different mixes.

“In 2020, I put out my first body of work; ‘The Saturn’ EP. I came into the limelight in 2021 when I got featured on ‘Holy Father’ off the ‘Back In Office’ project by Mayorkun.

I’m currently studying for a degree in Petroleum Engineering at the Federal University of Technology Owerri.

“I feel like they’re really separate worlds. You have to be two different people. Doing both, being very active in both, has been a struggle, honestly, because sometimes I literally have to forget I am Victony just to put maximum focus into studying and tests, exams, and all that stuff.

“I don’t go to school as often as I used to, but once in a while, I have to go to school to do some stuff. Sometimes we have presentations. So I have to be present for stuff like that, but other than that, I’ve been doing everything from home,” he stated.

Subsidy removal: S’West pensioners demand N40,000 minimum pension

Pensioners in the South-West geo-political zone have demanded for N40,000 minimum pension from the governors in the zone.

The pensioners made the demand at the end of the meeting of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), South-West zone, held in Ibadan on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by union executives from Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos and Ogun states.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting, the NUP Public Relations Officer for the zone, Mr Olusegun Abatan, said that the plight of pensioners in the South-West in particular and Nigeria in general had remained static for years.

According to Abatan, some pensioners in the zone earn as low as N350 monthly pension, while the governors seem not to see anything wrong with it.

He said that many states in the zone last paid their pensioners’ gratuities between 2012 and 2014, describing it as criminal and unacceptable.

“Governors’ salaries have continued to increase while some of them still factor in life pensions for themselves after spending four to eight years, without thinking about the lives of pensioners as well as their gratuities and pensions.

“The South-West zone of NUP has decided at our meeting that we will not take anything less than N40,000 minimum pension.

“It is disheartening to tell you that while workers have minimum wage, there is no minimum pension,” Abatan said.

He said that the removal of petrol subsidy had not only affected the citizens of Nigeria, but had more effect on pensioners.

The NUP public relations officer said that pensioners now found it more difficult to attend to their medical expenses and other needs as a result of low pension.

Abatan said that the NUP in the zone would soon come out with its own scale of pension review that would be presented to all the states in the zone, adding that this might also be passed to other zones across the country.

“We know we don’t have the power to go on strike but we have other means to drive and achieve our demands,” he said.

Abatan called on Nigerians to stand up for their rights against both the state and federal governments.

  • In loving memory of Senator Annie Okonkwo

In loving memory of Senator Annie Okonkwo

    • By, Edward T. Dibiana and Uche Nworah

Many Nigerians may seemingly be familiar with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCON), a federal government agency that oversees the multidimensional engagements of Nigerians in the Diaspora, with the objective to protect their interest and also harness their potentials to ensure meaningful contributions to the development of the nation.

But what they may not likely know is that the initiative that birthed this increasingly impactful commission, headed by Hon. Abike Dabiri, came out from the fertile mind and foresight of the late Senator Annie Okonkwo, who represented Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Senate between 2007 and 2011.

As a business mogul and an experienced legislator, Senator Okonkwo had identified the socio-economic benefits of evolving a strategic policy thrust that would engender more productive synergy between the Nigerian government and Nigerians in the diaspora.

And in order to give life to this idea, Senator Okonkwo, sponsored a Bill entitled “Establishment of the Nigerians Citizens in Diaspora Commission”, which later came into existence as NiDCON.

His time at the Senate was evidently very eventful, as he served on different Senate Committees, such as Upstream Petroleum Resources, Police Affairs, Environment ( as vice-chairman) and Agriculture. He later contested for the governorship of Anambra state in February 2010, but lost to the then incumbent, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last general elections.

But apparently, either in victory or in defeat, Senator Okonkwo had always exhibited a remarkable sense of sportsmanship and commendable philosophical worldview that do not give oxygen to politics of acrimony or calumny, which some people may associate with happenings in some sections of the Anambra state political ecosystem.

Since his recent home calling, by his creator, those that had engaged him in the past, in political pugilism in his home state, Anambra, either in senatorial or governorship elections, have continued to underscore his positive  lifestyle, rooted in decency, love for family and community, sense of propriety, humaneness and unblemished character, that’s not tainted by vagaries of business or politics.

For instance, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC’s), Senator Chris Ngige, former Minister of Labour and Employment, who is one of Senator Okonkwo’s former political opponents, in his condolence message, hailed his political sportsmanship, as a man who detested politics of bitterness and showed good character in his conduct and utterances, in and outside public office.

Ngige described him as a strong and dogged politician with whom he fought many political battles and fierce contests, the most memorable being the three-dimensional fight for the Anambra Central Senate seat between himself, the late Senator and late Prof Dora Akunyili in 2011. And even though Ngige won the election, Senator Okonkwo didn’t hesitate to call to congratulate him in the spirit of laudable sportsmanship.

Also the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, who also contested Anambra state governorship election with Okonkwo in 2010, gave further insight into Okonkwo’s positive politics as he disclosed how the late Senator supported and contributed to his campaign before the presidential election, in spite of the fact that he wasn’t a member the of Labour Party.

According to Obi, “Distinguished Sen. Annie Okonkwo was a veteran of Nigerian politics. Despite not being a member of the Labour Party, he was one of the strongest pillars of support in our journey to a New Nigeria. He provided very invaluable advice and immeasurable support during our vigorous campaigns around the nation.

“He persuaded his son, Hon. Uchenna Okonkwo, who was in another party then, to join the Labour Party, where he contested and eventually won a seat at the House of Representatives. After the elections and the subsequent declarations, which we are challenging in court today.

“Sen. Annie Okonkwo did not relent but remained steadfast in his efforts and commitment towards a New Nigeria. When I heard that he was sick, I travelled to the United States to visit and spent time with him.” Obi disclosed.

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) leader and Governor of Anambra state, Charles Soludo, has also eulogised him as a prominent son of Anambra who has paid his dues serving the state with dignity.

Remarkably, the renowned philanthropy of the Ojoto, Idemili Local Government Area born business tycoon, Senator Okonkwo, deservedly earned him the traditional titles of ‘Okaka Ojoto’, and ‘Agunaechemba Idemili’ (strong man of Ojoto and the Lion that defends the land of Idemili, respectively).

If there is any minute regret the late Senator may be taking to his grave, it would likely be not living long enough to symbolically handover the baton of representative leadership to his son, Uchenna, who was recently inaugurated to represent Idemili North and South Federal Constituency of Anambra state in the House of Representatives.

But Uchenna would be consoled by the fact that his dear father had the grace to shepherd him into that leadership path to continue the legacy of service to his people, through a well deserved electoral victory in the last National Assembly election.

Hon. Okonkwo described his late father as a leader with tireless efforts and passion for creating positive change, who would forever be remembered and cherished by those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

“His kindness and generosity touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on our community.

“His legacy will live on through the countless lives he impacted and the causes he fervently championed,” he said.

He said further that his father dedicated his life to public service, championing the rights of the people he represented with unwavering commitment and integrity.

According to him, Sen. Okonkwo was an accomplished politician, a loving husband, father, and a grandfather who left a legacy of service, leadership, and love.

Late Senator Okonkwo, who bestrode Nigeria’s business and political circles like a colossus, was a loving husband to his wife, Chief Mrs Chinyelu Okonkwo (Ugoagu) and caring father to his children.

From a small family business in Aba, in the old Imo state, trading in cosmetics and other items, he built a conglomerate, that employed over 7,000 people. His firms include, Reliance Telecomm, Clemco Industries, Modern Communications (satellite TV Network), MacClemm Marketing Communications, Sunflower Nigeria and Pentagon Oil.

The amiable Agunechemba will be laid to rest on August 30 in his country home in Ojoto.

I swore to die if I didn’t blow in 2020 – Burna Boy’s producer, Telz

Multiple award-winning record producer, Alli Odunayo aka Telz, has recalled predicting his demise to friends should he fail to become successful with his craft by 2020.

But seven days after his vow, Telz got a breakthrough that shot him to the limelight among the Afrobeats music giants as he met Grammy-winning singer, Burna Boy through BNXN, formerly known as Buju.

Having been offered such a rare opportunity, Telz took the bulls by the horn, revealing on the same day he met ‘Odogwu’, he produced the singer’s hit song ‘Naughty by Nature’ right there in his apartment.

Chatting on the latest episode of the All-Nighter podcast, the 26-year-old music producer said: “The first day of January 2020, something happened. I went to pick my friends up… not like I went to church. I came back and I was like, ‘Yo guys if I don’t blow this year, I will die.’

“They said, ‘Guy, why would you say that?’ Seven days after, we were at this Ijoya camp, and then Buju [BNXN] was like, ‘Yo Telz, I’m going to Burna Boy’s house, do you want to follow me?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, sure’.

“We went there. It was me, him and Tomiwa his manager and then Sess the producer.

“Obviously, Sess was the main producer and me, I’m just Buju’s guy who is a producer.

“Normally, when you go and see celebrities, they come out maybe like one or hours after, but as we opened the door, Burna was smoking. And I was like, wow! Burna Boy.

“From there, him (Burna Boy) and Sess were working on some stuff. Then me, I was just there. I would take opportunities when they come.

“They wanted to get some food. So, Buju and Sess they left. Me, I was just there. He (Burna Boy) now said, ‘Guy, you be producer?’ I said yes, I have some beats. I played these beats, we did ‘Naughty by Nature’ that day.”

Telz is known for primarily producing Burna Boy’s Grammy award-winning album Twice As Tall and Patoranking’s 2020 commercially acclaimed hit song “Abule”.

In 2020, Burna Boy’s “Twice As Tall” album had Telz as the principal producer with P Diddy serving as executive producer.

The album also featured Timbaland’s creations which later won the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album category, making him a Grammy-winning producer.

Two-time winners Germany knocked out of World Cup

Two-time champions Germany were sent crashing out of the Women’s World Cup group stages in the biggest shock of the tournament thanks to a draw with South Korea.

It is the first time in Germany’s history they have failed to reach the knockout stages.

One of the pre-tournament favourites, Germany knew they needed to better Morocco’s result against Colombia to progress in Group H, but that match finished 1-0 to Morocco.

An early goal by South Korea’s Cho So-hyun shook the Euro 2022 finalists in Brisbane, but captain Alexandra Popp netted her fourth goal in three matches to equalise shortly before half-time.

Germany were heading through as group runners-up as they went off the pitch for the break, but Morocco stunned Colombia to score minutes later in Perth, meaning Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side had to win.

Popp was their best hope of scoring again and she almost did, thumping a header off the crossbar minutes after she had bundled it over the line, only for the video assistant referee to confirm it was offside.

The Wolfsburg striker came close again later when she sent a free header wide of the post, roaring in frustration as the minutes ticked away for Germany.

During stoppage time Germany sent countless crosses into South Korea’s box to no avail as substitute Sydney Lohmann struck wide and sent another effort inches over the bar.

Germany’s players fell to the ground at full-time and were in tears as they were consoled by staff members.

South Korea finish bottom of the group, having lost their first two matches.

Colombia face Jamaica on Tuesday at 09:00 BST in the last 16, while Morocco take on France at 12:00.
