  • Defeated politicians, subsidy thieves after Tinubu’s administration – Arisekola

Defeated politicians, subsidy thieves after Tinubu’s administration – Arisekola

Publisher of Street Journal, Mogaji Wole Arisekola, has alleged defeated politicians and subsidy thieves were inciting Organised Labour to embark on strike.

He appealed to Labour to consider workers in the private sector who are yet to recover from COVID-19 and naira redesign disruptions in the quest to embark on protest over removal of fuel subsidy.

Arisekola, who is the President of the Association of Online Media Practitioners of Nigeria (AMPON), added that private companies are the largest employers of workers in the country and it has not been easy to continue to be in the business judging from the socio-economic situation.

He appealed to Labour leaders to negotiate with government instead of considering strike actions.

In a chat with some selected journalists at a breakfast meeting on Monday, the Ibadan-born publisher expressed dissatisfaction on the way things are in the country.

He lamented how some public and civil servants are handling sensitive matters, which he said is making the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu look bad in the eye of the public.

He said: “It is unfortunate that the country has come to this level that some defeated politicians and frustrated subsidy thieves are inciting people against the government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kassim Shettima.

“Labour Unions proposed strike will just make life more difficult for Nigerians. This government has to be careful, the politicians are not helping the president at all with their selfishness, childish and incendiary statements in public.

“The unilateral announcement of N617 naira of PMS per liter has caused unnecessary panic throughout the country. This government must tread with caution and not give room for sycophants, propagandists, political jobbers and disgruntled civil servants whose candidates lost out in the last general election to make the current government under the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to lose touch of its renewed hope agenda of putting Nigeria back on track to prosperity.

“President Tinubu needs to jettison some moles around him who obviously and not helping him in the areas of policy direction, especially  with the way they are publicly mocking the underdogs, with no modicum of sensitivity, dignity or decency.

“The infamous joke of letting the poor breathe in the National Assembly has been grossly misinterpreted and has sent wrong message to the public, giving room for the fifth columnists to make political gains out of it at the expense of the current government that truly mean well for the poor masses.

“The circulation of living an opulent lifestyle by politicians did not portray this government in good faith with the citizenry. The National Assembly’s N70 billion must be properly and justifiably explained to the masses before the opposition hijacks the conscience of the masses and turn it against the APC led government. Our politicians must be circumspect, they need to change the narrative and win people to their side, through policy formulation and implemention that are masses-friendly, timely and sustainable.”

Arisekola added: “People make mistakes. It is inevitable that government makes mistakes, after all, people constitute government. When situation forces the government to make hard but beneficial long term choices, criticisms must be expected.

“What is unexpected and outrightly untenable is when decisions, mistakes and missteps are underscored by contempt and arrogance from elected officials or government appointees in response to frustration expressed by citizens.

“Nigeria is a broken nation. Nigerians understand that their country was raped and pillaged by previous administrations. Just two months a ago, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was formally sworn-in to office.

“We elected him to perform miracles? Nigerians want miracles, and quick results and no one should blame them for seeking immediate relief after so much suffering. That there is no relief yet does not bode well for this administration.

“Nigerians are justifiably impatient and a bit angry that the change they were promised and voted for is excruciatingly slow. The government and those who are the face of it should come to the understanding that the people’s sentiments are crucial. They should appreciate the feelings of bewilderment of Tinubu’s supporters, which are increasingly compounded by a strong sense of mistrust and betrayal.

“If this government must stave off industrial action by the organized labour and angry Nigerians, they must find a way to calm the anger and frustration in the country exacerbated by power cuts, and an atmosphere of general discontent. It is painful to bear the burden of a problem one did not cause. The vast majority of Nigerians are nursing the wounds of plunder and sustained financial exploitation that was visited on them. The masses of our people have for years lived on pittance and wages they barely subsist on.

“The cost of living has outstretched their incomes farther than bearable. Inflation is galloping. Power supply is epileptic. Many have no idea where the next meal will come from. Our communities need roads, water, modern health facilities and better schools. Many parents cannot afford a decent meal for themselves and their children. Nigeria has the dubious distinction of having the highest number of out of school children in the world.

“Permit me to reiterate my stand further that the government of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is well intentioned to bring back the lost fortunes and hope of Nigeria, but Mr. President should not for any reason give chances to individuals who are not in sync with his principles and ideologies of advancing socio-economic growth and development for our nation.”

  • Breastfeeding can save 100,000 children in Nigeria – UNICEF

Breastfeeding can save 100,000 children in Nigeria – UNICEF

UNICEF says improved breastfeeding practices can save more than 100,000 children each year in Nigeria and 22 million dollars in health care treatment costs related to inadequate breastfeeding.

Ms Cristian Munduate, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria Country Representative, said this in a statement on the occasion of the World Breastfeeding Week, on Tuesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every Aug. 1 to Aug.7 across the world.

The theme for WBW 2023, “Enable Breastfeeding, making a Difference for Working Parents”, focuses on creating more awareness on breastfeeding support in workspaces.

Munduate said that it could also generate an additional 21 billion dollars for the economy over children’s productive years by increasing cognitive capacity and preventing premature mortality in the early years.

“There is evidence today that every N1,000 invested in supporting breastfeeding can yield an estimated N35,000 in economic returns for Nigeria.

“While I acknowledge significant strides made in the past two decades in Nigeria to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates, it remains evident that more needs to be done.

“Presently, only seven out of 36 states provide six months fully paid maternity leave and only 34 per cent of children aged zero to six months are exclusively breastfed as recommended by UNICEF.

“Nigeria is still far from reaching the World Health Assembly 70 per cent target by 2030,’’she added.

She added that global analysis reveals that elevating rates of exclusive breastfeeding could save the lives of 820,000 children under the age of five annually, generating an additional income of 302 billion dollars.

According to her, breastmilk holds significant importance for the health and well-being of children, mothers, and society at large.

“Breastmilk is the first vaccine and the first food that every child receives at birth.

“Breastfeeding stands as a crucial pillar in safeguarding infants against life-threatening infections, supporting optimal brain development in children and reducing the incidence of chronic childhood and maternal illnesses, ultimately lowering healthcare costs.”

Munduate said that breastmilk was not just a super-food and vaccine, but also a smart investment.

She, therefore, called on the government at all levels and employers to take decisive actions to ensure a supportive breastfeeding environment for all working mothers, including those in the formal and informal sector.

The UN scribe said that presently, women make up 20 million out of the 46 million workforce in Nigeria, with 95 per cent within the informal sector, while the formal sector only employs five per cent.

“Shockingly, only nine per cent of organisations have a workplace breastfeeding policy, with only 1.5 per cent in the public sector. Women in the informal sector have nearly no support for breastfeeding.’’

To facilitate progress, she said it was essential for governments and businesses to play their part by providing the necessary support to mothers and caregivers.

She added that it was important to have policies that support breastfeeding, such as paid maternity leave for six months, as well as paid paternity leave, flexible return-to-work options and regular lactation breaks during working hours.

Munduate also advocated for adequate facilities that enable mothers to continue exclusively breastfeeding for six months, followed by age-appropriate complementary feeding while breastfeeding continued to two years and beyond.

“In conclusion, investing in breastfeeding support policies and programs in all settings, especially during crises and in food-insecure regions, is crucial to ensure the well-being of our children and the progress of our society.

“Let us collectively work towards a future where breastfeeding is supported and embraced by all, resulting in healthier generations and a thriving Nigerian workforce.”

Stunning James helps England power into last 16

Lauren James produced a sensational individual performance as England entertained to sweep aside China and book their place in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup as group winners.

It was a display worthy of their status as European champions and James once again lit the stage alight in Adelaide with two sensational goals and two assists.

The 13,497 in attendance were treated to a masterclass from Chelsea’s James, who announced her arrival at the World Cup with the match-winner against Denmark on Friday.

She helped England get off to the perfect start when she teed up Alessia Russo for the opener, and later slipped it through to Lauren Hemp to coolly place it into the bottom corner.

It was largely one-way traffic as England dominated and overwhelmed, James striking it first time into the corner from the edge of the box to make it 3-0 before another stunning finish was ruled out by video assistant referee (VAR) for offside in the build-up.

China knew they were heading out of the tournament unless they responded, so they came out with more aggression in the second half, unnerving England slightly when Shuang Wang scored from the penalty spot after VAR picked up a handball by defender Lucy Bronze.

But James was not done yet – she volleyed Jess Carter’s deep cross past helpless goalkeeper Yu Zhu for England’s fourth before substitute Chloe Kelly and striker Rachel Daly joined the party.

England, who had quietly gone about their business in the group stages, will have raised eyebrows with this performance before their last-16 match against Nigeria on Monday.

Avoid engaging in drug abuse, cybercrime, Bago warns corps members

Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger has urged corps members to avoid the temptation of indulging in drug abuse, trafficking, cybercrime and other negative acts capable of portraying the scheme in bad  light.

Bago stated this during the closing of the 2023 Batch B, Stream One orientation course for corps members deployed in the state and those dislodged from FCT, at Paiko Local Government Area of the state.

The governor, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, advised the corps members to be good ambassadors of the scheme.

“You must remember that being a corps member does not confer on you immunity from the legal consequences of any wrongdoing.

“I, therefore, enjoin you to be law abiding and serve as role model to younger ones in the communities you are posted to for your primary assignment,” he said.

Bago cautioned the corps against the use of social media for ethnic prejudices, rumor peddling and hate speech, adding that they should rather use it to promote unity and peace in the country.
