Women to watch football games in Iranian stadia

Women in Iran will be allowed to watch football matches in stadiums in the future, the head of the country’s football association said on Friday.

Until now, women in Iran have only been allowed in the stands in a few exceptions, most recently at the friendly match against Russia.

When and under what conditions women will be allowed to watch matches in stadiums was initially unclear.

“Fortunately, the country’s Security Council has approved this issue and set up a working group to decide on its implementation,” Iranian Football Federation chief Mehdi Taj said on the sidelines of an event.

The country’s arch-conservative clergy argued that women had no business in stadiums with fanatical male fans.

Under pressure from world governing body FIFA, the ban has been relaxed somewhat in recent years.

Iran’s powerful Security Council, which is above the parliament, deals with defence issues and the protection of the Islamic Revolution.

Its decisions are final after they are approved by the religious leader.

  • IPMAN denies plan to hike petrol to N700 per litre

IPMAN denies plan to hike petrol to N700 per litre

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has denied the alleged plan by the association to increase pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol to N700 per litre nationwide.

The Chairman of IPMAN Southwest Zone, Alhaji Dele Tajudeen,  stated this  in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Friday

The chairman, therefore, urged Nigerians to disregard the speculation and not to engage in panic buying.

Tajudeen stressed that the price of the product would not be more that what is being sold presently.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for removing the subsidy on petrol adding that it was long overdue.

“Even in PIA bill, it has been clearly stated that the subsidy must be removed,

”So, I want to commend him for removing the subsidy and I want to say that we are in support totally. This is because the subsidy was a scam.”

He said the slight increase in pump price was because of the transportation cost and that Nigerians should be at rest as the commodity will not be out of reach for the masses.

“I want to disabuse the mind of the people that they should not panic about it, there is no cause for alarm, we are in control and there is nothing like that.

“So, people should be rest assured that there is no way they can buy petrol more than the price it is being sold now.

“If we look at the price from NNPC retail limited, which is an integral part of NNPC limited, they have more advantages than independent marketers and major marketers.

”So, it was the retail price that they announced they had never given a specific price to the independent marketers.

“However, I have read what somebody put into the paper, it is just speculation it is not a reality. Nothing like that I want to assure the masses.

“” There is no how the price can go to N700 as we speak, because even if the FX is N700 or N800 that has not nothing to take the price of petroleum from N500 to N700,” Tajudeen said.

He noted that the product had been deregulated, hence the differential in prices was due to transportation as it is related to location.

”If you are moving products within Lagos the price may not be more than N300,000 but if you are moving up to Ibadan or there about it could be as much as N500,000.

”And if you are going to Ilorin, it could be as high as N700,000 that would account for differential in prices.

“I want to say with all sense of authority that as of today within Lagos metropolis nobody should sell more than N515 to N520 per litre.

”Though NNPC has given us the price but the reality of it is that what we buy from the market; because NNPC limited is not the only source for our product, we get from private depots.

“So, whatever we buy is what we put our own margin and sell.

”But as of today, the highest you can get anywhere should be around N550; Lagos N510 per litre; Ogun State between N500 and N520,” Tajudeen said.

Meanwhile, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) had vowed to resist the alleged planned increase  in pump price of petrol

They made their position known in a statement jointly signed by the Convener, Dr Basil  Musa; and Co-Convener, Malam Haruna Maigida, in Abuja on behalf of others.

They vowed to resist by picketing IPMAN members’ filling stations across the country.

They accused the IPMAN of running a parallel government and inflicting pains on ordinary Nigerians by their unilateral adjustment of price of petroleum.

They described the planned increment as unacceptable and called on the Federal Government to stop IPMAN from its alleged profiteering at the expense of ordinary Nigerians.

The CSOs said the move was an economic sabotage, coming at a time Nigerians are still trying to come out of the “price shock”, occasioned by the increment on May 29.

  • Oyo state creates another ministry out of Information, Culture and Tourism ministry

Oyo state creates another ministry out of Information, Culture and Tourism ministry

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says his government will create out of the present Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism a separate ministry for Culture and Tourism.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Ibadan.

He stated that Makinde said creating the Culture and Tourism Ministry would help his government focus on tourism as one of the key sectors that would drive the state’s economy.

“The Ministry of Information will be headed by one commissioner, while another commissioner will head the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

“This will bring the number of ministries in the state to 18 as against the 17 that existed during my first tenure,” Makinde said.

He explained that the decision was likely to set tongues wagging as to why government was adding more to its financial obligations at this point in time.

”Some may think that we should be reducing rather than increasing the number of ministries, departments and agencies at this time in order to reduce the cost of governance.

“But, after due consideration, we believe that the benefits of these adjustments far outweigh the costs, and Oyo State will be better for it.

“With this, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism will be better able to oversee the Tourism Board and extract the value trapped in the agency.

“On the other hand, the Commissioner for Information will focus on communicating the activities of government to the people through the various channels we have made available,” the governor said.

Makinde further disclosed that he would put his cabinet in place in the next two weeks.

“Names of the other commissioner-nominees will soon be sent to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.”

He charged all residents of Oyo state to keep praying for the state and the entire country, saying he has the belief that Nigerians will overcome the trying times.

  • Court strikes out PDP’s suit challenging Gov Nwifuru’s nomination

Court strikes out PDP’s suit challenging Gov Nwifuru’s nomination

A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Capital, has granted the request by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to withdraw a suit it instituted against Ebonyi Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, challenging his nomination as governorship candidate by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 general elections.

The PDP in a suit no. FHC/AI/CS/7/2023 challenged the validity of the nomination of Nwifuru by the APC on the ground that he was still a member of the People’s Democratic Party and couldn’t had been nominated by the APC as its 2023 governorship candidate in Ebonyi State.

The Court presided by Justice Fatun Riman on February 4,2023 struck out the case on the ground that it was statute-barred.

The decision followed a notice of preliminary objection filed by the 1st and 2nd Defendants (Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and the APC) against the PDP’s suit.

Dissatisfied by the Court’s decision, the Plaintiff (PDP) through its Counsel, Chief Mudi Erhenede in a motion on notice dated 15th day of May 2023, asked the Court to set aside its judgment delivered FHC/AI/CS/7/2023 on 14th February 2023 on the ground that the Plaintiff was not served with the preliminary objection filed by the Defendants that led to the dismissal of the case.

Erhenede argued that hearing the notice of preliminary objection by the Court without being served has denied the Plaintiff fair hearing, hence, the motion before the Court to set aside the said ruling.

“The purported notice of preliminary objection upon which the Honourable Court based its ruling of 14th of February 2023 was not served on the plaintiff before the said hearing/decision and has still not been served on the plaintiff till the time of this application,” he argued.

Delivering his judgement, on Thursday June 22, Hon Justice Hyeladzira  Ajiya Nganjiwa, nullified the judgement saying it was done without jurisdiction, and declared it, null and void.

Among other orders, Justice Nganjiwa also directed that the case be relisted back on the Court’s case list for fresh trial.

“That the suit No. FHC/AI/CS/7/2023 struck out on the 14th day of February 2023 be relisted back on the Court’s case list forthwith for same to he heard and determined on its merit,” Justice Nganjiwa ordered.

However, having lost interest in the case since it  was already part of its suit pending at the Ebonyi Governorship tribunal sitting in Abuja, the PDP, through a motion on notice applied for leave for discontinuance of the case.

When the motion on notice came up for hearing on Tuesday, June, 27, 2023, Counsel to the Plaintiff, Barrister Adams Uzuakpunwa Oboke, told the Court that the plaintiff voluntarily applied for the withdrawal the case and urged that the case be struck out.

Both the lead Counsel to the 1st and 2nd defendants, Barrister Ejike Anwu and that of 3rd Defendant, Barrister Ibrahim Obiahu, did not oppose the motion.

Ruling on the motion, Justice Hyeladzira Ajiya Nganjiwa, consequently struck out the case.

“The Motion by the plaintiff for the leave to discontinue this suit which is not opposed , it is granted as prayed,” the Court ruled. END//

Arsenal agree £105m deal to sign West Ham’s Rice

Arsenal have agreed a deal worth £105m to sign West Ham’s England midfielder Declan Rice.

Talks are continuing between the clubs over how the deal will be structured for the 24-year-old.

It follows a third bid from the Gunners, having previously had two bids rejected after falling short of the £100m West Ham want.

Earlier, Manchester City, who had a £90m offer for Rice rejected on Tuesday, withdrew from the running.

Hammers captain Rice has been at the club since joining their academy from Chelsea in 2014.

Earlier this month he led them to Europa Conference League victory, their first major trophy in 43 years.

His contract at London Stadium was due to expire in 2024.

Arsenal’s bid is comprised of an initial £100m plus £5m in add-ons. The initial fee equals the British record Manchester City paid for midfielder Jack Grealish.

Earlier this month, England midfielder Jude Bellingham signed for Real Madrid for an initial £88.5m, although that deal could reach £115m if add-ons are activated.

The Premier League’s most expensive signing is the 121m euro (£107m) transfer fee that Chelsea paid Benfica for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January.
