The Police boss who briefed journalists after the operation at the command headquarters in Lokoja, said the criminal gang opened fire on the security forces upon sighting them.

    Five Chelsea strikers who misfired

Chelsea football club has had many strikers who didn’t live up to expectations in recent times. Here are five of them that misfired.

    1. Romelu Lukaku

Topping the list is Belgian striker and Serie A goal poacher, Romelu Lukaku. He made his return to England in the 2021/22 season regaining his form at Inter Milan, scoring 64 goals in 95 games to win the Scudetto for Milan that season.

However, his return didn’t prove to be as his thoughts because he was only able to record 15 goals in 44 matches.

    2. Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres’ Chelsea career wasn’t a good one from the start. His debut was a defeat to old teammates at Liverpool. He failed to score in his first 13 games, even playing with Didier Drogba, he still wasn’t able to pick form.

Managers from Carlo Ancelotti to Jose Mourinho struggled to accommodate him.

    3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Despite his blistering performance at Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang He joined Barcelona in a bid to continue his good goal-scoring and ease himself from the troubles that led to his exit from the England side.

However, he left Barcelona and joined Chelsea to have more playing time and re-unite with former coach Thomas Tuchel, but unfortunately for him, Tuchel was sacked before he could get to his full potential and he has since then been under the shadows in Chelsea recording just 3-goals in 22-apps across all competitions.

    4. Alvaro Morata

A return of 24 goals in 48 starts looks great and was up to the task. However, he missed a penalty on his debut that cost Chelsea the Community Shield. He didn’t perform to expectations as he got more cards than goals in the second half of last season and tge biggest disappointment for him was losing his place to Frenchman Oliver Giroud.

    5. Kai Havertz

Yes, he won them a Champions League final and the claims are that he wasn’t a real striker but a converted nine but the bones of contention are he has always played as a striker.

Considering the huge amount of money he was bought for by Chelsea, (£72m) the English side had high hopes of him delivering up to their expectations, but it has not been like that.

Kai Havertz was only able to register 32 goals in 139 matches for Chelsea and is on the verge of joining Arsenal this transfer window.

Apparently, Kai Havertz is also considered as one of Chelseas’ strikers who underperformed.

NLC urges FG to shelve electricity tariff hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the shelving of the proposed plan of electricity tariff hike by July 1 for the collective good and safety of Nigerians.

Mr Joe Ajaero, NLC President, said this in a statement titled “Shelve this tariff hike” and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Ajaero, the plan to increase electricity tariff by 40 per cent by July 1 would further compound the current hardship of ordinary Nigerians.

“The massive increase is explained away as a response to the over 100 per cent increase in the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS).

“Details reveal a movement in inflation from 16.9 per cent to 22.41 (threatening to needle 30), and a shift  in exchange rate from  N441 to N750. We believe not even these figures are a justification for this proposed tariff increase.

“The issue of capacity to pay and quality of service delivery are not only  germane but superior to any rationalisation by market logic. The service providers in spite of sundry support have not been able to meet the threshold of 5,000 megawatts,” he said.

The NLC president said that the proposed hike would lead to a ripple effect by other product or service providers in the country.

He noted that the ordinary Nigerians needed to be protected from these economic vagaries that is suddenly thrust on them.

“We would want to advise apostles of the Market who have called NLC all sorts of names to check their conscience. The rate at which they are going is highly combative and combustible,” Ajaero said.

He called for more novel interventions to cushion the effect of these tariff hikes on majority of Nigerians.

“In light of this, our  advice is that this proposed tariff  hike should be shelved for our collective safety.”

AbdulRazaq asks NASS to revisit gender inclusion in constitution

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Chairman Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has promised to champion a national advocacy for a constitutional amendment to deepen gender inclusion in the Nigerian laws.

That emerged as women rights activists acknowledged the profound impacts Kwara gender policy is having on the country and its implications for women development.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the University of Ilorin chapter of the National Association of Political Science Students on Wednesday, the Governor urged the National Assembly to revisit the proposed gender parity legislation for a more inclusive society.

The Governor, whose surprise attendance at the students’ event drew a standing ovation in the school, spoke on the theme: ‘Breaking barriers to women participation in politics and governance in Nigeria: Kwara as a case study’.

Dozens of students, top academics, activists, and public intellectuals, including representative of the First Lady and Permanent Secretary Ministry of Tertiary Education Hajiya Habibat Salman Saidu; Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor I.P. Ifabiyi; former Dean of the Faculty Professor Hassan Saliu; Head of Department of Political Science Dr. Adebola Bakare; Professor Adedoyin Jolade Omede; Dr Abdulwasiu Olayinka Tejidini; youths development advocate Barrister Temitope Titilope Anifowoshe; President of National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS) at the University of Ilorin Raheem Azeez Arisekola; and Azeezat Adekanye of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife attended the event.

The Governor recalled his decision to give voice to women, including signing a legislation to make it a permanent feature of the political space, was to ensure that women are not shut out of the decision-making process in the state.

“We will try our best to push that agenda going forward. We will encourage other states to go along this time through constitutional amendment,” AbdulRazaq told newsmen on the sideline of the public lecture and launching of Classic Magazine of the National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS), University of Ilorin chapter.

“It is a good thing that the National Association of Political Science Students puts this lecture together. It is part of deepening SDG 5. We are able to pass a (Gender Composition) law. We will make sure that in the 10th assembly, it is tabled again for amendment to make sure that SDG 5 is attained.

“The passion for gender parity in governance is for the administration to be more committed to what we are doing. If you look at 2019, especially in Kwara, there was no single female elected member at both national and state assemblies from here. Today, we can say that we have been able to push that agenda, and the people of Kwara State have elected five women into the state assembly. That is very good, coming from zero to five.”

He added that a major boost for gender inclusion would be for development partners to introduce some programmes-for results, which reward any governments that prioritize women political empowerment

Other speakers commended the Governor for making the state a reference point in gender mainstreaming, adding that the society must support women to attain their full potential.

Becoming a mom most incredible thing I’ve ever done – Simi

Singer Simisola Kosoko has revelled in motherhood, describing it as the most incredible thing she’s ever done.

Despite being a remarkable achievement for her, Simi admitted to being vulnerable at some point, explaining she only began to notice herself again after her look-alike daughter, Adejare clocked two.

In an interview with Cool FM, the ‘Duduke’ crooner discussed the difficult yet gratifying moments of motherhood and the compromises one must necessarily to reap its dividends.

The host asked: “How’s your little baby? You got a little carbon copy of yourself that is one of the most interesting people already. What’s that like?”

Jare’s mom replied: “Oh my god, she is [one of the most interesting people already]. It is a lot of things at the same time and I feel like the more time I spend as a mom, my feelings about it evolve. And I remember…she’s 3 now, she just turned 3 last month…and I remember that I just started to find myself again last year. Just right after she turned 2.

“It’s almost like… I don’t know, I guess everybody experiences it differently, but for me, it’s like in your world, few things are dimmer to you but certain things are clearer to you. It’s like your brain just hones in to this whole mothering thing, that’s how it was for me.

“2 years later after I had my child, I feel like I started to see myself a little more. When I say see myself, I mean notice myself, like oh you’re still there. I don’t know how to explain it, it’s like the tunnel vision became a little bit wider, and I was just able to see and experience myself a little bit more.

“And so it can make you really vulnerable, but it’s such a beautiful thing. I feel like that’s the most incredible thing I have ever done and every day, I am grateful to have that opportunity. But it’s not easy.

“One thing I always say is before you do it, people say you can have it all, you can do it all, you can but you cannot do it all at the same time.

“Certain things have to give way, and that’s just the way, that’s just the nature of things. You have to compromise on some things depending on how important it is to you.”

Lawyer lands in police cell after woman visits hotel room

A lawyer-cum-activist Ayo Sogunro has narrated how a visit to his hotel room by a married female acquaintance landed him in an Abuja police cell.

Sogunro, in a lengthy thread on Twitter, detailed how policemen in Abuja forced their way into his hotel room, harassed and arrested him on Friday evening.

His tweet reads in part: “I had come to Abuja to facilitate a human rights meeting with several NGOs, and my accommodation was also booked at the hotel where the meeting would be taking place.

“Soon as I landed, I sent messages to my friends in Abuja confirming that I was around.

“As always, whenever I am in Nigeria, my friends would come to welcome me at my accommodation, share a drink or two, and generally gist. This time was no different.

“One of them promised to stop by on her way home from work, also in the area.

“Of the people I texted, she was the first to get to my place. I checked into the hotel around 6.20 pm, and she got there around 6.40 pm. Barely 15 minutes later, three police officers came to my door.

“When the police arrived at my door, they asked to be let inside. I denied them entrance and told them they had no authority to enter a private space without a warrant or a clear just cause. Instead, they just pushed me aside and made their way in.

“On seeing my friend, they asked her to come with them. We both asked why. The police replied that because my friend was a married woman, she should not have been in the hotel with me.

“I said this was ridiculous. She was a citizen of Nigeria and had a right to meet with anyone. The officers insisted that she must come with them and so must I for ‘questioning’.”

He stated more officers soon arrived at the scene, and there were six policemen around, while hotel staffs were also at the scene.

“Eventually, the officers got fed up with my refusal to voluntarily accompany them and then said they were putting me under arrest — still no clear allegation or reason,” Sogunro added.

“My friend and I then followed them out of the hotel where a van was waiting, and they took us to the station.

“Up to this point, I still had my phone on me. I wasn’t touched or cuffed or assaulted by the officers. Our interaction throughout was verbal only. I was able to use my phone to make calls and alert people about what was unfolding.”

He said they were taken to the station where he came face-to-face with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) who mentioned it was forbidden for a married woman to visit a man particularly according to the operational penal code of Northern Nigeria.

He said the police “got fed up with his sermon” and the DPO ordered he be booked and taken a cell.

However, the next day which was Saturday, Sogunro noted he wrote a statement, made peace with the police and was released.

With his recent experience, Sogunro expressed there were “systemic issues in the policing process that needed to be addressed,” and he worried about how the less-privileged citizens might be unable to stand up for themselves.

Paris summit: Financial institutions, political support key for reforms — Adesina

President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina has stated that financial institutions play key contributions to global financial stability.

Adesina spoke on Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) and the role of multilateral network of institutions and helping vulnerable countries at the New Global Financing Pact summit, Palais Brongniart in Paris.

He emphasised that to solve the numerous challenges across the world today, there’s need for immense political support.

Adesina spoke alongside Edouard Ngirente, Prime Minister of Rwanda; Kaiser Saïed, President of the Tunisian Republic; Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, President of the Republic of Chad; Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka; Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at the session moderated by First Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, Nadia Calvino.

Adesina said: “I think what this panel just shows you is that if you are going to solve the problem that we face today, we need great political support for the reforms that are going to be needed.

“We also need financial institutions. We need the global financial architecture to work much better, all the way from IMF, and fiscal stability, to multilateral development banks that have the knowledge, skills, experience and the instrument to drive investment in water, sanitation, agriculture, energy and all of that. How we work as a system is very important.”

Speaking further, Adesina said: “In the whole issue of debt treatment and debt resolution, sometimes I feel it is like a patient that goes to a doctor and the doctor keeps saying come back tomorrow, keep making it more complicated and by the time the patient is supposed to be treated, he is dead, it becomes a post-modern kind of a thing.

“If you check the case of Africa, like in the 90s, it was such a protracted process. It was not transparent. We had a lost African decade in that period. It is a great thing to have a common framework.”
