Niger Delta deserves senate presidency- Nabena
Ahead of Tuesday’s election of presiding officers of the 10th Assembly, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Hon. Yekini Nabena, has further advanced reasons why the Niger Delta should produce the next Senate President.
Commending the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on Sunday evening that led to the withdrawal from the race of two major contenders for the position of Speaker in the 10th Assembly, Nabena stressed the need for religious harmony for the peace and progress of the country.
In a statement on Monday in Abuja, Nabena said: “For the sake of equity, justice and fairness, I will appeal to all the Senators-elect to rally around Akpabio to emerge the next President.

“This has become necessary because the two major contenders in the race for the position of Speaker have withdrawn and declared their support for Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, which means that the road is almost clear for the emergence of another Muslim from the North as number four citizen.
“Therefore, there is a need for religious balancing in government and for the fact that only South-south will be left out of the equation if the position of Senate President eludes the region, hence the more reason Senators-elect should rally support for Senator Godshill Akpabio as the next Senate President.
” As it stands today, the South-west has produced the President, the North-east has the Vice President, the North-west is about to produce the Speaker, (Note that the three of them are Muslims), the North-central has the SGF and the South-east to produce the Deputy Speaker. So, where is the South-south?”
The former APC spokesman also appealed to the North “to forgive Senator Akpabio if he has done anything wrong in the past for the sake of unity and religion harmony by allowing the former Akwa Ibom Governor to emerge the next Senate President.

10th NASS: Step down for Akpabio, APC chieftain urges Yari, Kalu
Ahead of Tuesday’s inauguration of the 10th National Assembly, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Ekiti State, Dr. Olusegun Agbalajobi, has urged Senators Orji Kalu and Abdulazeez Yari to shelve their ambition for Godwill Akpabio to emerge as the new Senate President.
Agbalajobi urged all the aspirants for the senate presidency to support the preferred candidate of the APC for leadership of the 10th National Assembly in the overall interest of the country.
The APC chieftain who made the appeal in a statement on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, said the party came up with the choice of Akpabio in the interest of the stability of the country.
He contended that since President Bola Tinubu and the Vice President, Kashim Shettima are Muslims, the country could not afford to have another Muslim as Senate President.

The former governorship aspirant said that it was only fair and natural that the position of the Senate president should be ceded to christian dominated zones, especially South South.
According to him: “It is imperative to stress that the last time someone from the present South-South states occupied the office of senate president was during the 2nd Republic (1979/1983), when the late Distinguished Senator Joseph Wayas, from Cross River State, was elected, first in October 1979 and; again, in October 1983, before that Republic was truncated on 31st December 1983.
“So, there is a patriotic need for Senator Orji Kalu, Abdulazeez Yari and to shelve their and support the choice of the APC for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly.
” All the aspirants vying for the senate presidency position are competent and qualified to occupy the plum legislative seat. But, I must say that Akpabio stands tall considering his leadership qualities, vast experience and patriotic posture.
“Akpabio’s emergence to pilot the affairs of the 10th Assembly would restore the glory of the country’s apex legislative institution and would further deepen democratic rule and the delivery of good governance to the people of Nigeria.
“I, hereby, urge all other APC senators to step down for Akpabio in the collective interest of APC and the country at large for unparalleled legislative advancement, democratic stability and actualisation of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu”.
