“Indeed, the issues raised by the category of personnel mentioned in the reports arose in 2011, which was 10 clear years before the current leadership of Brig. Gen. MB Marwa (Retd). However, in a determined bid to motivate the workforce, over 70% of the workforce, a number of who had been stagnated on one rank for 15-20 years, were promoted and their ranks harmonized in 2021 soon after Gen. Marwa assumed leadership of the Agency.

“Even though more than half of the category of personnel referred to in the reports had been promoted in the recent promotion exercises, the ongoing expansion of the Agency which creates more vacancies for officers and men to move up, no doubt provides the window for the few not yet affected to be elevated in another exercise underway for the junior ranks.

“Anyone not yet affected can rest assured that the Chairman/CEO considers their welfare paramount and central to the successes so far achieved by his leadership and will continue to pay attention to their career progression in the interest of the overall high productivity goal set for all Commands and formations of the Agency.”

Paris Club refund: Court insists on Emefiele’s appearance over $53m debt

A Federal High Court in Abuja has insisted that Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele must appear before it on July 19 in relation to a $ 53 million judgment debt arising from the Pars Club refund, which he allegedly declined to pay.

Justice Inyang Ekwo issued the order on Tuesday at the resumed hearing in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1193/2017 filed by a lawyer, Joe Agi (SAN) against a firm, Linas International Ltd and others.

Justice Ekwo insisted that his court will not entertain Emefiele’s motion for a stay until he appears.

The judge had, on October 20 last year, ordered the CBN governor to appear in court on January 18 over his alleged refusal to obey the order of the court for the payment of the judgment debt to AGI.

No major development happened in the case until Tuesday when plaintiff’s lawyer, Ayodele Arotiowa told the court that Emefiele was yet to comply with the order directing his appearance.

Lawyer to the CBN Governor, Audu Anuga (SAN) noted that the court had not sat since the order was made.

Anuga added: “There is an intervening circumstance, which we have brought to the attention of the court by filing of an affidavit of fact, which the judge demanded to know when it was filed.

Anuga said his client filed an appeal on October 28 last year, adding that aside from the appeal, he also filed a motion for stay.

He added that the affidavit of fact was filed to bring to the attention of the court that the appeal has been entered and given number.

Anuga said he also has a pending application to set aside other orders earlier made by the court.

Justice Ekwo noted that the appeal Emefiele filed was to frustrate the order directing his appearance.

The judge added: “That is exactly what you have done. So, we, the trial court cannot do our job? I am not going to hear you on any application until Mr Godwin Emefiele appears in court.

“Therefore, I am going to give a date for you to report to the court on the compliance with the order of the court.

“Upon being aware that the motion for stay of execution is a live matter in this court, this court shall not hear that application unless and until Mr Godwin Emefiele who has been ordered to appear in court appears in court,” Justice Ekwo said and adjourned till July 19 for report.

FG targets July completion for collapsed Ijora bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Government (FG) on Tuesday said ongoing rehabilitation of the Apapa-bound lane of the Marine Bridge near Ijora that collapsed in May would be completed in July.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the deck-on-pile bridge caved in and was shut on May 17 after investigations revealed that vandals had flared and removed steel components beneath the infrastructure.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs Olukorede Keisha told NAN on telephone that the contractor was already on site fixing five panels of the bridge damaged by the vandals.

Keisha said although only one panel collapsed, a total of five were distressed and currently being demolished and rehabilitated simultaneously on alternative stretches.

She explained that after panel one and three were demolished and replaced, two, four and five would be demolished and recast.

She said that method of reconstruction was being adopted to prevent total collapse of the bridge,

adding that, bridges are usually not continuous but cast in panels.

The Controller added that the repairs would  be completed in July.

“It was discovered after inspection that five panels are in critical condition. Work has started with demolition of alternate panels now. We will demolish panel one then we move to panel number three.

“When they cast one and three, they will come and demolish panel number one and two and four,” she said.

Panels are long stretches of the bridge deck connected by expansion joints.

Speaking on measures against future vandalism, she said a proposal had been made and submitted to dislodge all illegal occupants under bridges.

The Controller said the federal government was going to collaborate with the private sector on how to secure all open spaces underneath bridges to safeguard them.

Commenting on the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstruction/rehabilitation project, Keisha said work on the Otedola Bridge section would “be completed this weekend”.

She added that, the contractor would therefore move to the Ojodu Berger Section and complete repairs by end of July, all things being equal.
