Economic model under Tinubu to drive higher GDP, says IMPI

The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) has said that the new economic model deployed by the President Bola Tinubu administration will drive the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) higher in 2026 and beyond.

In a policy statement signed by its Chairman, Dr Omoniyi Akinsiju, the institute projected that the economy would hit 5.5% in 2026, higher than the forecast of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

It reads, “We made it clear in that statement that the Nigerian economy under the current administration had engendered a paradigm shift from perennial dependency on crude oil earnings to policy-driven economic facilitation.

“This refers to the deliberate use of governmental policies, regulations, and institutional frameworks to reduce obstacles, lower costs, and speed up economic activities, particularly in trade and investment.

“The facilitation, in this context, aims to foster sustainable, inclusive growth by improving efficiency and reducing red tape.

“Seven months after that questionable projection by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), we have seen a volte-face.  In an epiphany-like realisation, the IMF now speaks of a resurgent Nigerian economy as reflected in the global multilateral institution’s revised Nigerian economic outlook to a projected 4.4 per cent economic growth for 2026.

“This is the highest GDP growth projection by the IMF over the last 17 years, a real expression of confidence in the Nigerian economy.”

The think tank also referenced the general consensus on Nigeria’s growth prospects which it attributed to the economic model adopted by the President Bola Tinubu administration.

The statement added, “Beyond the IMF’s new GDP projection, we have observed a consensus around a higher than four per cent economic growth performance expectation of the Nigerian economy by virtually all known individual and public economic commentators.

“While the Nigerian Government projected 4.68 percent growth in 2026, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) projected a massive 7 percent, 1.5 percent higher than the Nigeria Economic Summit Group’s 5.5 percent for the year.

“PwC sustained the conservative threshold by projecting a 4.3 percent growth conditioned on higher oil price while the World Bank also revised its earlier 3.7 percent projection to 4.4 percent.

“The agglomeration of these positive economic growth outlooks by domestic and global institutional players points to an emerging economic paradigm that emphasizes increased production and productivity momentum, foreign exchange stability, dis-inflation, galvanized foreign direct investment and inflow, and unobtrusive regulatory environment, anchored in policy-driven economic facilitation.”

Awujale selection: Osugbo demands fresh council of Afobajes

Members of the Osugbo Society in Ijebu-Ode have called on Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to reconstitute the Council of Afobajes (kingmakers) to ensure transparency and credibility in the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

The call was made on Tuesday during the society’s first meeting of 2026, held in Ijebu-Ode, where members expressed displeasure over the involvement of individuals in the selection process without proper background checks.

Speaking at the meeting, the Oluwo Osugbo of Ijebu-Ode, Oluwo Omobolanle Bakare, condemned the exclusion of the Osugbo Society from the selection process despite its position as third in the traditional hierarchy, as stipulated in the 1957 constitution.

According to him, allegations of financial inducement among kingmakers would not have arisen if individuals of proven integrity had been appointed.

“I want the government to investigate and verify the conduct of those who will serve as kingmakers. They should not appoint just anybody, but people with integrity. Those currently selected are not faithful at all,” he said.

The Oluwo further appealed to the governor to recognise the Osugbo Society as part of the Council of Afobajes, noting that the 1957 constitution clearly stipulates that the Oluwo of Ijebu-Ode is a member of the council.

“In the 1957 constitution, the Osugbo was placed in the third class. We have written to the governor this morning to consider us as part of the Afobajes. The constitution already recognises the Oluwo of Ijebu-Ode as part and parcel of the council, but some people do not like it. That was why we protested,” he explained.

He commended the Ogun State Government for suspending the selection process, stating that rising agitations from different quarters could have disrupted peace in the town.

“I see the governor’s action as a good one because without it, everything would have turned upside down,” he said.

The Oluwo also questioned the large number of individuals reportedly shortlisted, describing it as abnormal.

“I cannot understand how 95 people were presented for the Awujale selection. They should have picked two, three, or four candidates and presented them to Ifa. Once the Osugbo is not involved, the process is incomplete. Without the Osugbo, there is no Council of Afobajes,” he added.

Also speaking, the Otu-Erelu Osugbo of Ijebu-Ode and Iyalorisa General of Akile Ijebu, Chief (Mrs.) Osoteku Alawiye commended Governor Abiodun for dissolving the committee earlier saddled with the responsibility of selecting the new Awujale, describing the group as unfit for such a sensitive assignment.

She urged the governor to constitute a fresh set of kingmakers that would include all relevant traditional institutions, including the Osugbo Society, in order to ensure an inclusive, credible, and crisis-free selection process.

Chief Alawiye described Ijebu-Ode as a town of great historical importance, stressing that the selection of its monarch must strictly follow due process and traditional rites to guarantee peace and progress in the land.

Lawyer, tech expert develop apps to simplify legal case studies for Nigerians

Legal practitioner Precious Ekong and software engineer Stay Njokede are developing Lawexa, a platform aimed at making Nigerian law understandable and actionable for everyone, not just lawyers.

The idea emerged after a personal experience that deeply affected Precious – a young man was arrested on the night of his wedding, detained for several days, and his family had to pay bail to secure his release.

Precious wondered whether he had been informed of his rights or knew he could request a lawyer or ask for the reason for his arrest.

“That’s when it really hit me,” Precious recalls. “It isn’t that the law doesn’t exist. It’s that most people can’t even access it.”

This gap in legal knowledge surfaces across everyday life—from contract disputes and tenancy issues to unfair dismissals—situations where the law could protect citizens, but they do not know what to do or where to turn.

Lawexa was built to bridge that gap. Unlike typical legal information sites, the platform connects users directly to actionable legal guidance. It answers questions, flags urgent situations, and helps users connect with qualified lawyers when immediate support is needed.

The founders’ vision goes beyond technology. “I want a Nigeria where legal literacy is normal, where people make decisions with legal clarity, not ignorance,” says Precious.

Njokede added, “The law already exists to protect Nigerians. We’re just making sure people know what it says and can act on it before it’s too late.”

Fed govt honours 12 teachers with N350m

…First Lady hails teachers’ sacrifice, urges excellence, innovation

The Federal Government has awarded 12 outstanding teachers across the six geopolitical zones with N350,000,000 in recognition of their dedication, innovation, and impact on Nigeria’s education sector.

The awards were presented on Tuesday by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, at the Nigeria Teachers’ Summit 2026 in Abuja, with the theme: “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National Agenda for Education Transformation and Sustainability.”

During the summit, Alausa stated that the government would sustain reforms aimed at empowering teachers and restoring dignity to the profession.

Giving a breakdown, the minister said the 12 best-performing teachers were selected from both basic and senior secondary education levels across the six geopolitical zones.

Alausa explained that the selection process was transparent and merit-based, with three teachers nominated from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory at both the basic and senior secondary school levels.

He said that each of the selected teachers would receive N25,000,000, while the overall best-performing teacher nationwide would receive N50,000,000.

The minister described the awardees as exemplifying professionalism, integrity, innovation, and dedication to learners, noting that they represent the best of the teaching profession in the country.

“This is more than a reward. It is a national signal that teaching is a noble, respected, and valued profession in Nigeria,” he said.

The minister said the recognition of the teachers reflected the government’s broader education reform agenda under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Alausa said, “Teachers are the foundation of education, and education is the foundation of national development. No nation can rise above the quality of its teachers.

“No reform, no matter how well designed, can succeed unless teachers are empowered, motivated, supported, and respected.”

He pledged that the government would continue to invest in teachers through structured training, improved career pathways, and fair rewards, noting that education remained central to national development.

Beyond the Federal Government’s awards, the Governor of Kebbi State also promised N5 million each to all the awardees, amongst other gifts from others.

The summit was designed to strengthen the teaching profession and advance sustainable education reforms, while fostering dialogue that will shape national education policy and inform future reform initiatives.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, paid glowing tribute to teachers across the country, describing them as the quiet architects of nation-building.

She urged them to pursue excellence, embrace innovation and uphold integrity in shaping future generations.

The First Lady commended the Federal Ministry of Education for convening the summit, noting that its theme was timely and strategic in addressing longstanding challenges within Nigeria’s education sector.

“I am delighted to join you today at this National Teachers’ Summit, a gathering of teachers and education professionals whose dedication, sacrifice and commitment lay the foundation for our nation’s future,” she said.

According to her, meaningful education and national progress can only be achieved when teachers are adequately equipped, motivated and supported.

Drawing from her background as an educationist and former classroom teacher, the First Lady said she understood first-hand the demands of the profession and the lasting impact teachers have on society.

“Teachers are the quiet architects of great nations. They shape young minds, instill values and nurture hope. Sustainable development begins with quality teaching and learning,” she stated.

Senator Tinubu reaffirmed the commitment of the Tinubu administration to education under the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that education remains a central pillar of national development.

She said the federal government was committed to sustained investment in teachers’ welfare, professional development, and the acquisition of skills required to prepare learners for a rapidly changing world.

She particularly lauded the launch of the EduRevamp Portal by the Federal Ministry of Education, describing it as a landmark initiative that would strengthen continuous professional development for teachers nationwide.

Also speaking, Minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Ahmad, emphasised that empowering teachers is central to national education reform.

The minister encouraged participants to engage actively and ensure that deliberations translate into tangible actions for a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready education system.

She said, “No education system can rise above the quality, motivation, and empowerment of its teacher. Empowering teachers is not an isolated intervention; it is the foundation upon which sustainable education reform is built.”

On his part, the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Amba, commended the federal government for organising the summit.

He emphasised the importance of recognising and professionalising teachers as key pillars in education, noting that effective education depends on motivated, supported, and professional teachers.

The NUT president also commended government funding for teacher development programs and encouraged sustained support to transform the education system.

“Education transmission can only be achieved if teachers are professionalised, friendly, motivated, and supported to guide the learning process.

“The teacher is always the teacher. We are proud to be here with our mother teachers of Nigeria. We commend the federal government for funding programmes that promote the professionalism of teachers in Nigeria,” he added.

The event also witnessed the launch of Edurevamp Online teacher professional development portal designed specifically for the continuous professional development of teachers.

Abia traditional rulers launch statewide drive to boost NIN, PVC registrations

The chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze Sir Linus Nto Mba, on Tuesday announced a statewide mobilisation initiative aimed at significantly increasing the number of residents registered for National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).

Eze Sir Linus made the announcement while presiding over a meeting of the Council, which included principal officers and chairmen of traditional rulers from the 17 Local Government Areas, held at his office in the JAAC Building, Umuahia.

The decision came amid concerns over Abia state’s relatively low registration figures despite its large population.

The chairman emphasized that traditional rulers, as custodians and fathers of the people, have resolved to take responsibility for mobilising eligible citizens, particularly those aged 18 and above who have yet to register.

“Our resolve is to ensure that Abia State records one of the highest numbers of registered citizens. This exercise is not for any individual or political interest, but purely in the interest of the state and its development,” he stated.

Eze Sir Linus explained that the mobilisation drive will adopt a grassroots approach, extending from the state level to zones, local governments, and autonomous communities to ensure no eligible citizen is left out.

The Council also plans to assess the availability of registration facilities, including equipment, personnel, and logistics, by visiting relevant offices where registrations are conducted.

The Chairman underscored that the initiative is non-political, noting the pivotal role of traditional rulers across Nigeria in grassroots mobilisation for national development.

“As true fathers of our communities and the state, we will not allow Abia to lag in this critical national exercise,” he added.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers to support government efforts aimed at strengthening civic participation and ensuring accurate population data for the overall progress of the state.

  • UNN warns against external attempts to spark unrest over sundry charges

UNN warns against external attempts to spark unrest over sundry charges

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has raised the alarm over alleged plots by external actors to incite unrest on campus under the pretext of protesting an increase in sundry charges, an issue the university says has already been amicably resolved with students.

In a statement on Tuesday, the acting public relations officer, Inya Agha Egwu, clarified that the matter of sundry charges for the 2025/2026 academic session was concluded following extensive consultations between the University Governing Council, Management, and the Students’ Union Government (SUG).

The statement noted that on January 16, 2026, the Governing Council approved a 60 per cent increment in sundry charges as requested by students, replacing the initially proposed 100 per cent increase. The decision was described as a fair compromise in the interest of both students and the university.

The agreement followed months of structured engagement, beginning with the 294th Council meeting in July 2025, which established a committee on sundry and accommodation charges.

The committee initially recommended a 100 per cent increase at the 297th meeting in December 2025, citing economic realities and the need to maintain critical infrastructure. After consultations with the SUG, students proposed increments of 25 and 30 per cent before finally agreeing to 60 per cent.

Examples provided by the university showed that first-year students in the Faculties of Medicine and Social Sciences will pay ₦189,240 and ₦173,640, respectively, down from ₦243,900 and ₦225,900.

Other students in these faculties will pay ₦172,200 and ₦156,200, reduced from ₦203,400 and ₦185,400. Sundry charges vary by faculty and level of study.

The approved schedules have been uploaded to the students’ portal, and payments are currently being made at the agreed rates. Additional concessions include the option to pay in two instalments and a freeze on accommodation fee increases for the 2025/2026 session to ease financial pressure on parents and guardians.

Despite the transparent process and peaceful resolution, UNN warned that some external individuals, dissatisfied with the outcome, are attempting to provoke a crisis on campus for ulterior motives.

“These merchants of unrest are bent on exploiting the issue to disrupt the peace and stability of the university,” the statement warned.

The university cautioned such individuals to desist from any attempt to disturb the orderly academic environment of UNN, stressing that anyone found engaging in violence, intimidation, or destruction of property across any of the university’s campuses will be treated as a criminal and dealt with in accordance with the law.

The university also appealed to students to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on their academic pursuits, urging them not to allow themselves to be misled by unscrupulous elements seeking to profit from chaos.

“The University of Nigeria is peaceful. Our staff and students are dutifully going about their academic and administrative activities. Troublemakers should stay away from our campuses,” the statement concluded.

APC Zamfara denies Bello Turji’s alleged membership

The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday disassociated itself from claims that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji had registered as a party member, describing the circulated membership slip as forged.

Social media platforms have been awash with images of a supposed APC membership card bearing Turji’s details over the past 48 hours, suggesting he had joined the ruling party.

In a statement, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, said the fake slip was a deliberate attempt by mischievous actors to tarnish the party’s image and undermine its ongoing electronic membership registration exercise across the state.

Gusau noted that the card displayed clear signs of forgery, including the use of a widely recognized photograph of the criminal known to security agencies and the public.

He further explained that no individual can be validly registered without a National Identification Number (NIN), a requirement Turji is unlikely to meet, rendering the purported membership slip invalid and exposing the efforts of those attempting to discredit the party.

According to Gusau, “The forgers forgot that before any person is enrolled by NIMC, he must fill a form that will contain his full information before he is captured, how then NIMC could capture him with a military uniform and gun on his shoulders, or are they blind or had forgotten that such features are not acceptable.

“Also, from our records of today’s (Tuesday) registration from Kware ward, we did not have the ID number with the initial ID code ’26’, which is for Niger state, but forged for a Zamfara membership card, talkless of the name.”

The party said its preliminary investigation has already linked the mischievous card to a disgruntled member (names withheld), who was recently suspended from participating in the ongoing e-registration programme due to his dubious attitude.

“The APC e-registration coordinator in Zamfara State and indeed the state’s chapter of the party wish to completely debunk and distance themselves from the fake membership card with registration number: ID: APC 261113000102. The code used is for Niger state, which starts with 26, while Zamfara State ID code starts with 36, which clearly shows their ignorance of the registration.”

Calling on the public to disregard the slip, the party said it has reported the forgery case to the security agencies for investigation and prosecution of the sponsors of the fake membership slip.

Oyo Assembly rejects Shittu’s apology, refers lawmaker for further disciplinary action

The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday adopted the report of its Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which indicted Hon. Ibrahim Aremu Shittu, representing Saki West State Constituency, over a viral video in which he made allegations deemed defamatory and damaging to the Legislature’s integrity.

Despite accepting the Committee’s findings and recommendations, the House rejected Shittu’s apology and referred the matter back to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further disciplinary action.

The investigation followed a resolution of the House on January 20, 2026, after Shittu was alleged to have publicly accused the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Onaolapo (Ogbomoso South), of receiving bribes from the Chairman of Saki West Local Government, while also disparaging the Speaker and the House proceedings.

Presenting the report, Committee Chairman Hon. Gbenga Oyekola said both lawmakers appeared before the Committee on January 22, 2026, and that legislative instruments, oath of office documents, and the viral footage were thoroughly reviewed to ensure due process and principles of natural justice were observed.

The Committee concluded that Shittu’s statements were reckless, unfounded, and capable of undermining public confidence in the Legislature.

The allegations lacked credible proof, infringed on the rights of the Majority Leader, and brought the House into disrepute.

During proceedings, Shittu admitted making the unfounded claims, while Hon. Luqman Jimoh (Oorelope) tendered an apology on behalf of Shittu’s APC caucus and requested leniency. Hon. Sola Owolabi (PDP) also appealed for mercy.

However, other lawmakers described the apology as insincere and lacking genuine remorse. A Motion to reject it was moved, seconded, and upheld by the Speaker, who ruled the apology inadequate.

The matter was then referred back to the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further disciplinary recommendations.

In its report, the Committee cautioned members against making unverified public allegations that could damage the Legislature’s reputation, warning that future infractions would attract stringent sanctions.
