Adeyanju backs Wike over construction of Apo-Karshi road

Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has urged Nigerians, especially residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to support the efforts of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike over the ongoing construction of Apo–Karshi Road in Abuja.

The Apo–Karshi Road is a major thoroughfare linking parts of the Federal Capital Territory to Nasarawa State.

Its completion is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve accessibility for residents and commuters.

Adeyanju recalled how difficult it has been to construct the road and said Wike’s push to finish the construction of the road deserves commendation.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, Adeyanju, who has been a consistent critic of Wike, said the pace and quality of work on the road is remarkable.

He said, “Even as a consistent critic of Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, I must sincerely commend him for the remarkable speed and level of work currently ongoing on the Apo–Karshi Road”.

Adeyanju noted that the road, which has been under construction for years with minimal progress, is now seeing visible and commendable advancement.

He said, “That road has been under construction for years with little progress, and the pace of work now is both visible and commendable. Credit should be given where it is due. ”

Senate lauds police for swift arrest of Kano mother, six children’s killers

The Senate has commended the Nigeria Police Force for the swift arrest of suspects behind the gruesome killing of a woman and her six children in Kano State, describing the operation as evidence of a more responsive and intelligence-driven police institution.

The Senate Committee on Police Affairs gave the commendation on Wednesday following the arrest of Umar Auwalu and two alleged accomplices less than 24 hours after the attack on the home of Fatima Abubakar in Chiranchi, Dorayi Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area.

The suspects were apprehended in a sting operation barely 20 hours after the crime, which shocked residents of Kano and drew national outrage.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam-Madori, in a statement in Abuja, praised the police for what he called a demonstration of growing operational capacity.

“The speed with which the suspects were tracked and apprehended demonstrates a Nigeria Police Force that is becoming more responsive, intelligence-led and accountable,” he said.

Malam-Madori expressed deep sorrow over the killings, describing the loss of a mother and her six children as heartbreaking and distressing.

While noting that no arrest could reverse such a tragedy, he said the prompt response sent a strong signal that violent crimes would be pursued relentlessly and punished within the bounds of the law.

According to him, the successful operation underscored improved coordination within the force, particularly in the use of intelligence-led policing, targeted sting operations and rapid deployment.

The senator also assured Nigerians of the National Assembly’s commitment to reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism, accountability and the welfare of police officers.

“A motivated and well-equipped Nigeria Police Force is essential for public safety,” he said, stressing that efficiency and professionalism cannot be demanded without adequate funding.

“We must fund the police adequately. Security is built on resources, tools and people. When funding is weak, investigations suffer. When funding improves, response time shortens, intelligence improves and offenders are tracked down,” he said.

Malam-Madori added that proper funding would ensure the provision of vehicles, communication systems, forensic tools and continuous training, as well as improved welfare for officers who risk their lives daily.

“Every naira invested in the police saves the country far more in avoided crimes, protected lives and preserved property. Security spending is not wasteful; it is protective,” he said, pledging continued legislative push for realistic and adequate police funding.

He also commended residents of Kano who provided information that aided the investigation, urging citizens nationwide to sustain cooperation with law enforcement agencies by sharing credible intelligence and supporting lawful security efforts.

  • Court restrains Wike, FCTA from revoking Maitama land

Court restrains Wike, FCTA from revoking Maitama land

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has restrained the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from proceeding with their alleged plan to enforce the revocation of a disputed land in Maitama district, Abuja.

Justice Bello Kawu, in a ruling, equally barred Wike, the FCTA, and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) from giving effect to or acting on a revocation notice issued over Park No. 2008, Cadastral Zone A06, Maitama.

The ruling delivered on December 22, 2025, a certified true copy (CTC) of which was seen on Wednesday, was on an ex-parte motion filed by Nanet Hotels Limited, the claimant in a suit marked FCT/HC/M/17103/2025, challenging among others, the propriety of the purported revocation notice.

According to Justice Kawu, the defendants must be restrained “from giving effect to, acting upon, enforcing, implementing or taking any step whatsoever pursuant to the purported revocation contained in the letter dated July 7, 2025 and received on September 24, 2025, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice”.

The judge also restrained the defendants from “ejecting, harassing, intimidating, disturbing, sealing, demolishing, reallocating or otherwise interfering” with the claimant’s possession and occupation of the property.

He directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to refrain from enforcing or acting in furtherance of the disputed revocation or from providing security cover for any eviction or disturbance on the land.

Justice Kawu ordered all parties to maintain the status quo as of the date the application was filed.

Nanet Hotels Limited, through its solicitors, Ojukwu Chikaosolu & Co. has since issued a public notice warning politicians, public officeholders, developers and investors to stay off the disputed land.

In the notice dated January 20, 2026, the firm cautioned “all governors of the federation, all senators, all members of the house of representatives, all ministers, political appointees, developers, investors and the general public” against dealing in any land “situated at, upon, or derived from Park No. 2008, Cadastral Zone A06, Maitama District, Abuja”.

The solicitors said there is a “subsisting and active suit” before the FCT high court and “clear, binding and subsisting interim orders” protecting the land.

“For the avoidance of all doubt, no person, authority, agency or developer whatsoever has any lawful right to allocate, sell, transfer, mortgage, lease, develop or deal in any manner with the said land,” the notice reads.

The firm warned that any person who proceeds to transact on the land “does so entirely at his own risk” and would be deemed to have full notice of the pending litigation and court orders.

Troops discover mass grave of terrorists in Borno

Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have uncovered a mass grave containing the remains of about 20 terrorists killed during military operations in the Timbuktu Triangle area of Borno State.

The discovery was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement by the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, who said the mass grave reflects the increasing casualties being suffered by terrorist groups as a result of sustained military offensives in the area.

According to him, the bodies were those of terrorists neutralised during encounters with troops and subsequently buried by their fleeing collaborators.

“The discovery of mass graves containing an estimated 20 terrorist bodies killed during encounters with troops in the Timbuktu Triangle further exposes the scale of casualties suffered by the terrorists and discredits their propaganda narratives,” Uba said.

The statement highlighted significant operational successes recorded by troops in the ongoing clearance operations across the Timbuktu Triangle, noting that several key terrorist enclaves, including Tergejeri, Chiralia, and the Ajigin/Abirma general areas, have been cleared and brought under effective military control.

Uba explained that during the operations, troops made intermittent contact with fleeing terrorist elements and engaged them with heavy firepower, resulting in the neutralisation of several fighters.

He further revealed that on Tuesday, while troops were consolidating at a harbour location about six kilometres north of Chilaria, they encountered two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs).

“Through vigilance and swift action, one of the VBIEDs was successfully neutralised. However, the second VBIED breached the defensive position, affecting some logistics platforms,” he said.

Uba confirmed that the attack claimed the lives of some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, while others sustained injuries.

The wounded personnel were immediately evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for treatment.

He added that Nigerian Air Force aircraft, in coordination with other Nigerian Army air platforms, provided continuous aerial surveillance and fire support during the evacuation to ensure the safety of ground troops, who continued to engage and neutralise fleeing terrorists.

  • Abure faction to appeal Judgement sacking him as national chairman of LP

Abure faction to appeal Judgement sacking him as national chairman of LP

The faction of the Labour Party led by Julius Abure has announced plans to immediately appeal the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which sacked him as the party’s national chairman.

The judgment, delivered on Wednesday by Justice Peter Lifu, recognised the Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee as the authentic leadership of the party.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, the party argued that the court misinterpreted the April 4, 2025, verdict of the Supreme Court in declaring a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as caretaker chairman, describing the decision as inconsistent with the Labour Party Constitution.

The statement further maintained that Usman is not a registered member of the Labour Party.

According to the faction, the ruling contradicts the Supreme Court’s position that no court has the authority to appoint leadership for a political party, as leadership matters fall within the internal affairs of political parties.

The party added that it was encouraged by the fact that the Federal High Court is not the court of last resort, stressing that it would approach the Court of Appeal to challenge the judgment.

The statement read, “Although we are yet to see the Certified True Copy of the judgment in order to fully make comment about it, our position will become stronger when we see the CTC of the judgement. But generally, from the brief we have gotten so far, it is clear that the party will appeal the judgement.

“Before today’s judgment, we have been suspecting that it may go this way because of the body language around the court. When the matter was first filed, it was assigned to Justice Omotosho and suddenly, there was a sumarsult, as another matter was filed which was impari material and the one sent to Omotosho was withdrawn and now sent to Justice Peter Lifu. That was a red flag for us.

“Secondly, the court refused us the opportunity to respond to issues raised in the counter affidavit filed by other parties and quickly adjourned for judgement. That was the second red flag.

“Our adversaries were all over the place, jubilating weeks before, over a judgement that had not been delivered, telling everyone that they had already won. The jubilation by our adversaries was all over the social media, that come today the judiciary will hand over the party to Dr. Alex Otti.

“Now coming to look at the judgement itself, Nigerians should remember that the Court of Appeal pronounced Julius Abure’s National Working Committee as the authentic leadership of the party.  That pronouncement was what Nenadi Usman took to the Supreme Court to say that the courts (Federal High Court and Appeal Court) were wrong to have pronounced somebody as the Chairman of the Party. Ironically, today, a Federal High Court has summersulted and pronounced somebody as the Caretaker National Chairman of a party. So what is the judiciary turning into?

“To us, that was a clear contradiction against what the Supreme Court said. Secondly, the Supreme Court said that all matters that have to do with the leadership of the political party are internal affairs of the party and that has been the position of the Supreme Court.

“The courts have severely declined jurisdiction on matters that have to do with internal affairs of political parties. Looking at the judgement itself, in one breath, the court said the Caretaker Committee was properly set up, in another breath, the court said, it was an internal affair of a political party. In any event, the court was even wrong to be interpreting the decision of the Supreme Court.

“Secondly, even the Supreme Court never said that our tenure has expired. The Supreme Court simply declined jurisdiction in entertaining the matter because it was an internal affairs of the party.

“In any event, the tenure of the executive had never expired. The tenure of the executive was to expire in June 2024 but the National Convention was held in March, 2024 before the expiration of the then executive, which created the present leadership of the party. So for the court to have stated that the tenure has expired and a vacuum created are all laughable.

“It is curious at how this court arrived at holding that there was a vacuum in the leadership of the party when it didn’t go into the validity and legality of the national convention of the party held on March 27th, 2024.”

The party urged its members to remain calm as the leadership will do everything within the laws to ensure that justice is served for the interest of the party.

It warned that the party is not for sale and no amount of financial power will make us abdicate our leadership position in the party.

  • Jigawa governor pledges loyalty to Tinubu, APC

Jigawa governor pledges loyalty to Tinubu, APC

Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has reaffirmed his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging continued support for the success of the Tinubu administration.

The governor made the pledge while receiving members of the National Executive Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Dutse following their election at the association’s national delegates’ congress held in the state.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Hamisu Gumel.

According to the statement, Governor Namadi commended President Tinubu for introducing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing the initiative as a timely and far-reaching intervention aimed at easing students’ financial burden and expanding access to higher education nationwide.

He also noted that the NANS leadership was in Jigawa State for its North-West zonal elections, which involve Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Sokoto and Kebbi states, and expressed appreciation to the association for choosing the state as host.

“Governor Namadi reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to continue supporting NANS activities and all student-centred engagements,” the statement said.

The governor stressed that the NELFUND initiative reflects President Tinubu’s strong commitment to education, youth development and social inclusion, particularly at a time when many students are struggling with rising tuition fees.

Recalling Jigawa State’s intervention to cushion the impact of increased school fees, Namadi disclosed that the state government had spent close to N700 million to support indigent students through the Students’ Affairs Office as part of its human capital development agenda.

“I could remember when school fees were increased; many students found it difficult to pay, and some were on the verge of dropping out, which is unacceptable,” he said.

“So the student loan scheme introduced by President Tinubu has shown clearly that this is a president who genuinely cares about youth education in Nigeria.”

Governor Namadi also commended the NANS leadership for promoting dialogue, unity and constructive engagement among students, urging them to embrace accountability, transparency and responsible leadership.

“As future leaders of this country, we must resolve our differences through dialogue and consultation, not conflict,” he added.

In his remarks, the NANS National President, Comrade Olusola Ladoja, praised both the federal and Jigawa State governments for their student friendly policies, describing the education loan scheme as a groundbreaking initiative that signals a new era of responsive leadership.

“Since the inception of democracy, this is the first time Nigerian students are truly feeling the impact of governance,” he said.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the first president who listened to Nigerian students and deemed it fit to introduce loans to enable them to go to school.”

The NANS leadership also lauded Governor Namadi for providing a peaceful and conducive environment that ensured the successful conduct of the zonal elections, while pledging continued collaboration with the Jigawa State Government.

FG assures judiciary of continued support, harps on prompt justice delivery, accountability

…CJN, Fashola stress importance of reforms, technology adoption for efficient justice system

The Federal Government has restarted its commitment to continually support the judiciary to enable it to deliver on its constitutional mandate.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who stated this, tasked officials of the nation’s court system to ensure financial accountability and systemic reforms.

He spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at the 2026 strategic retreat for Chief Registrars of courts, organised by The Committee of Chief Registrars of Nigeria, with the theme: “Strengthening court administration, financial accountability and staff well-being for a more effective Judiciary in Nigeria.”

Fagbemi, who was the event’s Chairman, said: “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, I reaffirm the commitment of the executive arm of this government to working closely with leadership of the Judiciary to advance adequate and sustainable budgetary provisions, promote the review of court rules to establish clearer and more robust frameworks for the authority of Chief Registrars, and foster strategic partnerships aimed at continuous capacity building.

“I further assure you of our full support for reforms designed to strengthen service delivery and enhance the effective administration of justice.”

He, however, stressed the importance of enhanced financial accountability in courts’ management and the need to ensure the adoption of more technical innovations in courts’ operations.

Fagbemi said transparent and lawful management of court revenues is a constitutional obligation, adding that future constitutional amendments may introduce clearer provisions on the responsibilities and accountability of Chief Registrars.

Fagbemi hailed the gathering, which he noted was coming at a time when the Nigerians rightly demand greater accountability, expeditious dispensation of justice, and a Judiciary that embodies the highest ideals of integrity, efficiency, and modern governance.

He stressed the important functions of the Registrars to the operation of the court system, noting that they stand at the critical intersection where constitutional provisions meet practical reality for ordinary Nigerians seeking justice.

Fagbemi added, “The credibility of the Judiciary rests not only on judgments delivered but on the integrity and efficiency of its administration.

“As the first point of contact, you directly shape whether justice is accessible or obstructed, whether the system inspires confidence or frustration.

“You are essential officers, whose work enables the functioning of our judicial system.

“Let me state this with clarity and conviction: the ultimate measure of our success will be the tangible improvements felt by ordinary Nigerians seeking justice at your filing counters,” Fagbemi said.

Declaring the retreat open, Justice Kekere-Ekun described court administration as “governance in action,” stressing that weak administration leads to delayed justice, eroded public confidence, and reduced institutional effectiveness.

She said the judiciary’s credibility depends not only on sound judgments but also on transparent processes, prudent financial management, and the well-being of judicial staff.

“Our courts are the heartbeat of the justice system. Where accountability is absent, public confidence erodes; and where the well-being of judicial staff is neglected, institutional effectiveness is compromised”, the CJN said and emphasized that financial accountability is both a statutory and moral obligation essential to safeguarding judicial independence, noting that Chief Registrars occupy a position of profound responsibility as custodians of records and stewards of judicial resources.

Justice Kekere-Ekun also urged greater adoption of technology, including digital tools and judicial automation, to improve efficiency, transparency, and access to justice.

She notes that technology, when properly deployed, should be seen not as a disruption but as an enabler of judicial excellence.

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), in his keynote address, spoke about the need for a fundamental reform of the nation’s justice delivery system and identified key modifications required.

Fashola equally dwelt on the importance of the adoption of technology in courts’ operations and stressed the need for continuous training and collaboration among courts’ managers and support staff.

The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Chairman of the Committee of Chief Registrars of Nigeria, Kabir Akanbi, said the two-day retreat marked the revival of the group that had been inactive for some time now.

Akanbi explained that the “retreat offers us an opportunity to reflect, to refine, and to realign. It is not a ceremonial gathering; it is a commitment to the Judiciary envisioned by our Constitution: strong, independent, accountable, and people-centred.”

He identified the many objectives of the gathering, which he said include the creation of standardized administrative practices that promote fairness, efficiency, and national uniformity, and to deepen financial integrity and procurement transparency, reinforcing public trust in our stewardship of judicial resources.

Kabir added, “Our deliberations at this retreat are anchored on a growing consensus among Nigeria’s foremost judicial and legal leaders: justice cannot thrive without effective court administration.”
