EPL: Man Utd thrash Man City in memorable derby victory

Michael Carrick enjoyed the perfect start to his second spell as Manchester United caretaker boss as second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu inflicted massive damage on Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes.

After so much recent discontent, this was a day when Old Trafford came alive, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson celebrating in the stands and United fans sarcastically waving off City spearhead Erling Haaland when he was replaced 10 minutes from time.

City had goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to thank for keeping his side in the game, with the Italian making a string of superb saves to deny Dorgu, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and Mbeumo.

But even Donnarumma was powerless to prevent United going in front as skipper Bruno Fernandes led a surging counter-attack and fed Mbeumo to his left before the Cameroon forward, returning from Africa Cup of Nations duty, applied the finish.

Eleven minutes later, United doubled their lead as City defender Rico Lewis was caught flat-footed, allowing Dorgu to nip in front of him and turn home Matheus Cunha’s cut-back.

United had three goals disallowed for offside and Diallo hit the post late on but with Haaland extending his run to one goal in seven games, City didn’t look like mounting a comeback.

As United’s fans paid homage to Carrick, City boss Pep Guardiola slumped in his dug-out as his side’s run without a Premier League win extended to four games, opening the door for Arsenal to strengthen their grip on the title.

However briefly, United move up to fourth, something they failed to do so often under Ruben Amorim, leaving Carrick to celebrate with his new coaching team at the end.

Ndokwa youths endorse Okowa for Senate, vow to buy nomination forms

Youth leaders from Ndokwa Nation have thrown their weight behind former Delta Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, urging him to declare for the 2027 Delta North Senatorial seat.

They described the former Delta Governor as the district’s most credible and unifying political asset.

Operating under the auspices of the Ndokwa Youth Leaders Assembly (NYLA), the group made the call in a recent statement in Ogume, Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

They said their appeal was based on what they described as Okowa’s tested competence, administrative depth, bridge-building capacity, and visible investments in human and infrastructural development during his tenure as Governor.

According to the youths, Delta North urgently needs a senator with both national influence and deep local relevance—qualities they insist Okowa already possesses.

“Delta North cannot afford another ceremonial occupier of the Red Chamber,” the group warned.

“What the district needs now is results-driven negotiator who commands respect at the national level and remains accountable at home.”

In an audacious move, the youth leaders announced plans to embark on a district-wide signature mobilisation tour as part of a coordinated effort to formally draft Okowa into the race.

They further pledged to bankroll the purchase of his nomination and expression of interest forms, describing the initiative as a grassroots-driven push aimed at restoring transparency, credibility, and accountability to legislative representation.

The group also called on traditional rulers, opinion leaders, professional associations, women groups, and political blocs across Delta North to rise above ethnic sentiments and rally behind a candidate whose competence and credibility, they said, are already well established in Senator Okowa.

  • AFCON 2025: Chukwueze needs national support, encouragement – Deputy Speaker

AFCON 2025: Chukwueze needs national support, encouragement – Deputy Speaker

Austin Meregini, the Deputy Speaker of Abia House of Assembly, has urged Nigerians to show Super Eagles star, Samuel Chukwueze the support and encouragement he needs, in spite his penalty miss at the ongoing African Cup of Nations.

He said that himself, Umuahia East Constituency and the people of Abia stood firmly with him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi missed from the spot during the penalty shootout against hosts Morocco during the semi-final match on Wednesday in Rabat.

The miss from Chukwueze enraged fans leading to heavy abuse on the player on social media.

Meregini, who defended  the Super Eagles’ winger, noted that  football by its nature is a game of decisive moments.

“This is not a moment for public crucifixion or mob judgment, but for national support and encouragement.

“Our athletes must be strengthened, not broken, by public discourse,” he said.

The lawmaker recalled that even the world’s greatest players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, and so many others had missed penalties at critical stages.

“No serious observer of the game reduces a player’s worth to a single moment,” he said.

The lawmaker described Chukwueze as an outstanding footballer who has made reputable marks in all the football clubs he has played for.

Chukwueze has played for  Villarreal CF in Spain, AC Milan in Italy, and currently on loan at Fulham in England.

He said that Chukwueze had repeatedly demonstrated professionalism, discipline, courage, and deep commitment to the Nigerian jersey, through his scintillating performances.

Meregini said that such sound record cannot and should not be erased by one unfortunate incident.

He said that attempts to ridicule or discredit the Fulham winger over a trivial matter such as chewing a gum, are misplaced and unhelpful.

Chewing gum has been widely known to be a practice among professional athletes, including world-class coaches like Sir Alex Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti.

He explained that those personalities consistently indulged in such habit apparently to manage tension and maintain composure under pressure.

“To weaponise such a little detail against a young Nigerian who has given his all each time he is called upon is totally unjustified,” he said.

“Nigeria stands taller when we defend our own in moments of adversity.

“We remain proud of Chukwueze and the rest of the Super Eagles, and we remain confident in their resilience and continued contribution to the national team,” he said.

  • UNN Governing Council, SUG agree on 60% increment in sundry charges

UNN Governing Council, SUG agree on 60% increment in sundry charges

The Management of the University of Nigeria, acting on behalf of its Governing Council, has approved a 60 per cent increase in sundry charges for the 2025/2026 academic session, following extensive consultations with the Student Union Government (SUG) of the Nsukka and Enugu campuses.

The decision represents a significant reduction from the 100 per cent increment earlier proposed by the Council and reflects a shared commitment to dialogue, compassion, and collective responsibility.

Under the new arrangement, both fresh and returning students will pay a 60 per cent increase on existing sundry charge, amounting to a 40 per cent concession from the initial proposal.

According to the acting Public Relations Officer of UNN, Inya Agha Egwu, the agreement was reached on Friday after a meeting between the University Management and SUG representatives, including the SUG Presidents of Nsukka and Enugu campuses, Speakers of the Legislative Arms, and the SUG Senate President.

He stated that a detailed breakdown of the revised charges, disaggregated by faculty and level, will be communicated to the University community in the coming days.

The resolution culminates weeks of sustained negotiations that began in December 2025. During the engagements, student leaders explained that they revised their initial position of a 30 per cent increment in recognition of prevailing fees in comparable universities and the urgent need to upgrade infrastructure at the institution.

Prior to Friday’s agreement, the University Council had already moderated its stance from a 100 per cent increment to 90 per cent, before acceding to the students’ plea for a 60 per cent increase.

Both parties subsequently signed a formal agreement outlining key terms, including the option for students to pay the new charges in two instalments across the two semesters to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians.

The agreement also provides that there will be no increment in students’ accommodation fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the SUG leadership commended the Governing Council for its understanding and responsiveness, while urging students to remain calm, law-abiding, and fully compliant with the terms of the agreement.

The union also cautioned against actions capable of disrupting peace on campus and warned external elements to refrain from interfering in students’ affairs or inciting unrest under any guise.

The University Management reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, student welfare, and the continuous development of the institution in the collective interest of all stakeholders.
