Lagos lost 133 lives, N19.72bn property, recorded 1,685 fire incidents in 2025

No fewer than 133 lives and property valued at N19.72 billion were lost to fire outbreaks in Lagos State in 2025, the State Government has disclosed.

The figure represents an increase compared to 2024 when 91 lives and property worth N19.52 billion were lost to fire incidents across the State.

The latest statistics were contained in the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service 2025 Activity Report, released at the Y2026 Staff Engagement themed “People, Preparedness and Service Delivery: Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service,” held at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to the report, the service received a total of 2,617 emergency calls during the period under review, out of which 645 were false alarms. A total of 1,685 fire incidents were recorded, with 473 victims rescued alive, while property valued at N118.32 billion was saved.

The report further revealed that fire prevention activities recorded 8,791 facility inspections, 7,997 safety certificates issued, and 90 advisory reports generated in the course of the year.

The Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said that despite the notable achievements, the service continued to grapple with operational challenges, including frequent false calls and inadequate water supply during emergency responses.

She noted that the theme of the engagement aptly captured the critical pillars of effective emergency response and public safety, stressing that the forum provided an opportunity to reflect on past efforts, assess operational performance, and renew commitment to excellence.

“Our people remain our greatest asset; preparedness is the backbone of our operational effectiveness; and service delivery is the ultimate measure of our impact on the lives and property of Lagosians,” she said.

Adeseye also commended the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration for its unwavering support, particularly the recent signing of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Bill into law, which she described as a historic milestone that would strengthen the institutional framework and enhance operational efficiency.

She reaffirmed the service’s commitment to building “a safer, more resilient, and fire-conscious Lagos State where prevention is prioritised, response is swift, and service delivery remains people-centred and impactful.”

The engagement featured presentations, interactive discussions, and experience-sharing sessions aimed at improving fire risk management and operational preparedness. It also witnessed the decoration of newly promoted officers and the presentation of awards to deserving personnel.

  • Why Southeast backs Tinubu’s re-election bid, by Ex-Gov Chime

Why Southeast backs Tinubu’s re-election bid, by Ex-Gov Chime

Former Enugu Governor Sullivan Chime has explained the rationale behind the Southeast’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, describing the decision as well-considered and achievable.

Chime threw his weight behind last weekend’s adoption of Tinubu by Southeast Governors, leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting the President’s performance in office has earned him the region’s support ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking in Udi during the flag-off of the APC e-registration exercise in Enugu West Senatorial District, the former Governor said he was part of the endorsement “ab initio” and expressed confidence that Tinubu and the APC would sweep the polls in the Southeast in 2027.

“I am part of the Southeast, so you can take it for granted that I was part of that endorsement. That is our decision and we all stand by it. It is easily achievable,” Chime said.

According to him, Tinubu has performed well despite prevailing global and continental economic challenges.

“The President has done well. Whatever is happening in Nigeria is global and certainly in Africa. It is all over the place. Given the circumstances, he is doing well,” he stated.

On the Peter Obi impact, Chime said he would speak more extensively on the 2027 elections in the coming months, adding that the President would record a strong showing when campaigns begin.

Expressing delight at the growing enthusiasm for the APC in the Southeast, particularly in Enugu State, the former Governor said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) after the 2015 elections had been vindicated.

He disclosed that APC leaders in Enugu State were determined to surpass the two-million membership benchmark set for the state in the ongoing electronic registration exercise by Governor and party leader, Peter Mbah.

“We are here first of all to thank our people. You can see how excited people are to join the APC. APC is now the only party available in Enugu State,” Chime said.

“Ten years ago, when I joined the APC, we saw tomorrow. We knew PDP was going down. It is now obvious that APC is the way to go. The two-million mark is just a starting point; we are going beyond that in Enugu State,” he added.

Also speaking, the Enugu State Coordinator of the APC e-registration programme, Hon. Flavour Eze, commended party stakeholders and members in Enugu West Senatorial District for their mobilisation efforts, expressing optimism that the state would exceed the two-million membership target at the end of the exercise.

Hon. Eze also commended the chairmen of the local government areas in the zone for their proactive intervention in addressing challenges related to the National Identification Number (NIN) and voter’s card, noting that their efforts ensured that no willing prospective party member was excluded from the exercise.

He said the LGA chairmen worked closely with relevant agencies to facilitate the acquisition of NINs and voter’s cards for party supporters, thereby enabling them to successfully register as members of the APC.

Eze announced the official take-off of APC e-registration in Enugu West Senatorial Zone and urged members to commence registration immediately at the ward level, stressing that the exercise was mandatory for participation, recognition and access to party opportunities.

  • How I helped Tinubu win election in 2023 – Lai Mohammed

How I helped Tinubu win election in 2023 – Lai Mohammed

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, a former Minister of information and culture has disclosed how he deployed two-pronged campaign strategy that helped the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu to win the 2023 elections.

Mohammed disclosed this in his recently inaugurated book, “Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration”, which chronicled his experiences as a minister under the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

It would be recalled that ahead of the 2023 elections, Buhari had warned ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies to refrain from abandoning their primary assignments for political campaigns.

The late President who gave the directive at the end of a two-day 2022 Ministerial Performance Review Retreat in Abuja had warned that any infraction of the order would attract sanctions.

Mohammed, however narrated that, without prejudice to the presidential directive, he deployed campaign strategies, not through rallies or rhetoric, but by defending truth, documenting performance, and ensuring that history was not rewritten by propaganda.

The former minister recalled that ahead of the elections, the prevailing narrative within the opposition was that the APC-led Buhari administration had failed to achieve anything substantial, and thus , nothing warrants the party’s return to power.

He said the opposition figures actively propagated the claim, clearly part of orchestrated campaign, that the ruling APC had no achievements to campaign on.

Mohammed said the assertion, was neither factual nor grounded in reality, but a deliberate strategy to discredit the administration and by extension, the APC and Tinubu ahead of the polls.

“As the popular aphorism goes “Say it loud, say it often, and it longer matters if it’s true”

“Fully aware of the insidious nature of this campaign, I adopted a two pronged strategy: To systematically showcase the administration’s achievements and to decisively counter the opposition misleading narrative.

“Exactly 130 days to the general elections, precisely on Oct 18, 2023, my ministry launched the groundbreaking PMB Administration Scorecard Series (2015-2023).

“The goal was to present verified accomplishments of the Buhari administration and shape public perception during a politically-critical period.

“Under the programme, ministers presented concrete, evidence-based reports on their respective sectors.

“Each session includes a robust question and answer segment during which journalists critically interrogated the presentations and sought clarifications,” he wrote.

To ensure maximum visibility, Mohammed said he deployed a comprehensive multi-platform communication strategy leveraging traditional and digital platforms.

The former minister also recalled that on Feb. 22, 2023, just three days before the elections, his ministry unveiled the final set of legacy documentation tools.

The tools, according to him are; a documentary, testimony series, a compendium of PMB Achievements in both print and e-copy and a legacy portal.

Mohammed said the legacy portal was a digital repository, accessible from anywhere in the world, which contained all the presentations at the scorecard series.

“The scorecard series was undoubtedly one of the most innovative and impactful electioneering campaign strategies in Nigeria’s recent political history.

“It provides Nigerians, ahead of the elections, with direct unfettered access to the achievements of the outgoing administration.

“It offered detailed, ministry-by-ministry presentations and highlighted concrete policy achievements, infrastructural developments and sectoral reforms.

“By doing so, it not only set the tone for the constructive political discourse, but also powerfully reinforced the ruling party’s campaign message across the length and breadth of the country,” he said.

The former minister further argued: “Apart from disseminating information, the innovation of the Scorecard Series also shifted the dynamics of the political campaign itself.

“By placing verifiable facts and government achievements directly in the hands of the citizens, it compelled the opposition to constantly play catch-up”.

Mohammed said the strategies ended the oppositions’ unfounded narrative around failures or unfulfilled promises.

He said, with the strategies, the opposition parties found themselves in the defensive throughout the campaign season, mostly dwelling on “ad hominem” argument”.

Mohammed stressed that the success of the strategy lay in its subtlety and strict adherence to facts rather than overt political grandstanding.

He maintained that by anchoring the campaign on documented performance and verifiable records, the APC was able to reconnect with undecided voters and neutralise what he described as deliberate misinformation.

According to him, the approach reaffirmed the power of strategic communication in shaping electoral outcomes without breaching institutional responsibilities.

Lagos gets N179bn, oil States N424bn as FAAC shares N6tr in Q3 2025

Nigeria’s Federation Account recorded its highest quarterly disbursement in the third quarter of 2025, with a total of N6 trillion shared among the three tiers of government, according to the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

The figures, released in NEITI’s Quarterly Review for Q3 2025, showed a 55.6 per cent year-on-year increase compared with the same period in 2024 and more than a twofold rise in allocations over the past two years, underscoring the sharp surge in shared revenues.

NEITI disclosed that a total of N9.62 trillion was disbursed by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) between September and November 2025.

Reacting, Delta Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, urged Governors across the federation to improve the welfare of their people, noting that states were now receiving more money from the federation account.

The N6 trillion disbursement included 13 per cent derivation payments to oil-producing states, highlighting the significant contribution of oil-related revenues to the federation account.

A breakdown of the allocation showed that the Federal Government received N2.19 trillion, State Governments N1.97 trillion while local governments got N1.45 trillion, reflecting increased statutory transfers to all tiers of government.

Oborevwori, who spoke during the flag-off of the N39.3 billion Otovwodo flyover project in Ughelli North Local Government Area, said there was no justification for claims that there was no money, insisting that state governments now had sufficient resources to deliver development projects.

NEITI’s analysis revealed that statutory revenue accounted for 62 per cent of the shared receipts, while Value Added Tax (VAT) contributed 34 per cent. The Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) and augmentation from non-oil excess revenue each contributed two per cent, indicating the continued dominance of oil and tax revenues.

The distribution to the 36 states, drawn from statutory revenue, VAT, EMTL and the Ecological Fund, also included an additional N100 billion augmentation from the non-oil excess revenue account.

State-by-state data showed wide disparities in allocations, with Lagos State receiving the highest share of N179.3 billion in the quarter, translating to an average monthly inflow of N59.76 billion. Kano followed with N79.2 billion, while Rivers State received N78.8 billion.

At the lower end, Nasarawa received N42.5 billion, Ebonyi N42.9 billion and Ekiti N43 billion. NEITI noted that the gap between the highest and lowest state allocations stood at N136.8 billion in the quarter.

Among oil-producing states, Delta recorded the highest gross allocation of N180.68 billion, alongside Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Rivers as major beneficiaries of derivation inflows during the period. Oil-producing states collectively received about N424 billion.

On debt obligations, NEITI disclosed that deductions from states’ allocations to service debts and other obligations totalled N225.89 billion, representing a 6.5 per cent decline from the previous quarter. The average debt service ratio stood at 9.4 per cent, with more than two-thirds of states recording ratios below 10 per cent, suggesting improving subnational debt sustainability.

Despite the record inflows, NEITI warned of mounting fiscal risks in the fourth quarter of 2025, citing lower average oil prices and a decline in crude oil production from 1.64 million barrels per day in Q3 to 1.59 million barrels per day in the first month of Q4.

  • Niger Delta Blue Economy partners Caverton to promote safer, climate-friendly water transport

Niger Delta Blue Economy partners Caverton to promote safer, climate-friendly water transport

The Niger Delta Blue Economy Investment Summit has entered into a strategic partnership with Caverton Marine to advance safer, more efficient, and climate-conscious marine transportation across the Niger Delta.

The collaboration was formalised after a high-level meeting between the Summit’s organising committee and Caverton Marine in Lagos.

It is designed to tackle longstanding safety concerns on the region’s waterways and accelerate the deployment of modern, low-emission passenger vessels.

Caverton Marine, an indigenous boat manufacturer and marine logistics provider, has earned national recognition for its contributions to water transport development in Lagos, particularly through public-private partnerships that produced recent world-class passenger ferries for the state government.

Speaking after the engagement, Cedric Ogwu, a member of the Summit’s organising committee, said the initiative seeks to replicate successful models already delivering results in Lagos.

He explained that the Summit would provide a platform for governments, investors, and operators to advance infrastructure that improves safety, boosts commuter confidence, and supports sustainable economic activity in coastal communities.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of Caverton Offshore Group, Bode Makanjuola, welcomed the partnership and described the Summit as timely.

He noted that Caverton is already collaborating with some states in the Niger Delta but expressed readiness to expand its footprint in the region.

Makanjuola added that the company now manufactures passenger boats that meet global safety and quality benchmarks, including fully electric ferries designed to cut operating costs and reduce long-term environmental impact.

According to him, many waterway accidents stem from avoidable equipment failures and the use of substandard vessels.

Co-convener of the Summit, Dr. Uche Igwe, said Caverton’s progress in electric ferry manufacturing aligns directly with global energy transition priorities.

He noted that the adoption of electric ferries presents significant opportunities for the Niger Delta in emissions reduction and green investment attraction.

The Niger Delta Blue Economy Investment Summit will hold from 9–11 February at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. The event will convene policymakers, investors, industry leaders, and development partners to explore investment prospects across the region’s emerging blue economy. High-level speakers, including former Prime Minister of Tunisia, Mehdi Jomaa, have confirmed attendance.
