Oliseh: Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 form is best in 20 years

Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh has heaped praise on the Nigerian national team, declaring their recent performances at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 as the best he’s witnessed in 20 years.

In a recent interview circulating on X, Oliseh, a former captain and coach, said he was particularly impressed with the team’s displays against Uganda, Mozambique, and Algeria, displaying their tactical dominance and ability to pressure opponents.

He said, “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the next games. People were shouting the Tunisia game; for me, the Tunisia game was not really exceptional. The Tanzania game, for me, was not exceptional. I made my opinions clear. It’s no secret anymore.

“But the way these Super Eagles have played the last three games is the best I have seen Super Eagles play in 20 years. In 20 years, since 2006,” he declared. “You can say Sunday said this”.

Oliseh provided a breakdown of the tactical dominance displayed by the team under the current management.

“Ask anybody what he saw as a football analyst to watch our team, and they will tell you Nigeria now forces the opposition to play defensive non-stop”, he added.

He lauded the midfield trio of Frank Onyeka, Wilfred Ndidi, and Alex Iwobi, saying they are “hitting everything up in the midfield” and that Iwobi is “running the show like an orchestra”.

“Nigeria, they now put pressure on you from the defence, from the midfield, and Onyeka and Ndiidi are hitting everything up in the midfield. And look, Iwobi is just running the show like an orchestra,” he added, describing his enjoyment while watching.

“Commentating on Nigeria is the most difficult thing to do because you want to give all the compliments, but at the same time you’re saying, oh, no, no, no, I have to be neutral”, he added.

The Super Eagles face host Morocco in the semi-finals in Rabat, a match that promises to be a thrilling encounter between two footballing giants.

Nigeria, Turkey deepen collaboration on visa, business opportunities

The Federal Government has expressed willingness to collaborate with the Turkish government to deepen relationships in the areas of visa applications, approvals, and business opportunities for their respective citizens.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated this in Abuja shortly after he received the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Mehmet Poroy, on a courtesy visit.

Dr Tunji-Ojo and the Turkish envoy’s discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in visa facilitation and approvals, as well as business mobility and consular matters.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the meeting as substantive and timely, noting that Nigeria and Turkey shared strong historical and cultural ties that provide a solid foundation for deeper collaboration.

The Minister in a statement by the head of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry, Mrs Mary Ali reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to a smart, structured, and practical approach to international cooperation that supports people-to-people contact and legitimate business engagement.

The Turkish Ambassador highlighted recent improvements in visa facilitation for Nigerian business people travelling to Turkey, following collaboration between Turkish authorities and Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior.

According to him, under the new arrangement, applications are processed locally, with verified business persons benefiting from faster processing timelines of about three to four days.

Ambassador Poroy also raised concerns regarding Turkish businesspeople seeking to visit Nigeria for trade fairs, investments, and other commercial activities. He noted conflicting information on Nigerian visa arrangements for Turkish citizens and requested written clarification to guide applicants accurately.

He requested the inclusion of Turkey in Nigeria’s electronic visa (e-visa) system. The Ambassador explained that the absence of a Nigerian visa office in Istanbul creates logistical challenges, as applicants must travel to Ankara, stating that inclusion in the e-visa regime would significantly enhance business mobility.

Responding, Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured that denying visas to genuine Nigerian or Turkish business people is not in the interest of either country. He emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to transparency, dialogue, and continuous improvement in visa administration, while reaffirming Nigeria’s openness to legitimate investors and international business partners.

The meeting also addressed the recognition of Nigerian marriage certificates by foreign missions. The Minister clarified that all marriage certificates issued under Nigerian law are constitutionally valid and should not require additional verification. Ambassador Poroy acknowledged the concern and committed to reviewing the Embassy’s procedures, as both parties agreed to sustained engagement to strengthen bilateral cooperation and diplomatic relations.

US AFRICOM delegation meets Marwa, assures NDLEA of enhanced collaboration, support

A delegation of senior officials of the United States Africa Command on Tuesday met with the chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd).

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

During the meeting, they commended the existing relationship between NDLEA and AFRICOM, with an assurance of enhanced collaboration and partnership in the fight against illicit drugs.

Leader of the delegation, Philip Esch, who is the US Drug Enforcement Administration Liaison to AFRICOM, in his remarks said the relationship between NDLEA and US-DEA is not only a partnership but highly important to the US government.

He commended Marwa for providing good leadership and being open to international partnerships.

“We appreciate all the support and the leadership you provide. Obviously, you know that the relationship between NDLEA and DEA is of utmost importance, and we appreciate the excellent relationship across US law enforcement with you and the NDLEA. We want that to continue, and we are very happy that your tenure was renewed for another five years. We really look forward to continued engagement,” Esch stated.

Also speaking at the meeting, another member of the delegation, James Elseth expressed excitement about supporting NDLEA because of the Agency’s tremendous work in Nigeria, which is equally contributing to the security of other countries.

According to him, “I want to thank you, General, because you have a regional mindset and an international mindset, which is showing clearly in the scope and impact of your work. A lot of countries that we work with are only focused on their own country. And just like DEA and FBI, we have an international mindset to try to stop organized crime from impacting our respective countries.”

He commended NDLEA for providing adequate maintenance of equipment and facilities earlier provided by the US government, while assuring that two major projects were already in the works to further support the Agency, in addition to training and others.

In his response, Marwa expressed appreciation for the visit and commended ongoing support from US-AFRICOM to NDLEA while congratulating Philip Esch for his years of meritorious service to the US government.

“We appreciate very much the ongoing support from AFRICOM. I must also say that whatever we are achieving is due to this kind of support from you and our other international partners, and more importantly, due to the commitment and encouragement from the renewed hope of the administration of President Bola Tinubu,” he stated.

He urged the team to continue to support NDLEA, especially because of the nexus between illicit drugs and terrorism.

He said the Agency will appreciate more support on scanning equipment at the airports, digital forensic tools, portable drug detection equipment, forensic laboratory equipment, and sniffer dogs, among others.

Uba Sani, Arewa Think Tank hail tax reform laws, sensitize Kaduna residents

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, and a Northern advocacy group, the Arewa Think Tank, have thrown their weight behind the Tax Reform Laws introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging residents, particularly youths, to embrace the reforms as a pathway to sustainable development.

The governor spoke through the Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), Comrade Jerry Adams, who represented him at a sensitization summit organized by the Arewa Think Tank on Tuesday in Kaduna.

Speaking on the theme, “The Benefits of the Renewed Hope Tax Reform Laws,” Governor Sani explained that the reforms are designed to streamline Nigeria’s multiple revenue sources into nine clearly defined and harmonized revenue lines.

According to him, the initiative will simplify tax compliance, reduce confusion, and significantly improve the ease of doing business, especially for youth-led enterprises and small businesses.

Addressing youths from across Northern Nigeria, the governor underscored their critical role in the success of the reforms, describing them as entrepreneurs, innovators, professionals, and community leaders whose understanding, compliance, and demand for accountability would determine the long-term impact of the tax policy.

“The summit is not merely about sensitisation; it is about empowerment and partnership. Tax reform must translate into tangible outcomes such as better roads, quality education, accessible healthcare, improved security, and expanded economic opportunities,” the governor said.

He noted that when citizens clearly see the link between taxes paid and development outcomes, public trust grows and voluntary compliance increases.

Governor Sani urged participants to use the platform to engage constructively, exchange ideas across states, and serve as ambassadors of responsible tax citizenship across the Northern region.

He also encouraged collective ownership of the development process, stressing that the workshop should deepen understanding and inspire collaboration among all stakeholders.

The governor reaffirmed the Kaduna State Government’s commitment to progressive tax reforms, youth inclusion, and inter-state collaboration aimed at strengthening governance and economic resilience in Northern Nigeria.

He expressed appreciation to the Arewa Think Tank, its partners, and participants for choosing Kaduna State as host for the sensitization summit.

Earlier, the Convener of the Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, said the Tax Reform Laws present a unique opportunity for Northern states to become more innovative, economically self-reliant, and competitive.

According to him, the reforms would particularly enable states to responsibly harness solid minerals and other natural resources to drive development.

Yakubu noted that the reforms would also promote creativity and meaningful engagement with the Federal Government and the National Assembly on constitutional amendments that support resource-based development.

He said the reforms hold “huge fortunes and prospects” that would benefit future generations if fully embraced.

The Arewa Think Tank called on Northern political, traditional, and opinion leaders to patriotically support the reforms, urging state governments to leverage them to diversify their economies, strengthen internally generated revenue, and invest in education, healthcare, agriculture, solid minerals, and infrastructure.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to standing with President Tinubu on the implementation of the Tax Reform Laws and pledged to intensify public sensitization on the importance of taxation for national development.

According to the group, tax reform should be seen not as a burden but as an investment in a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous Nigeria.

Highlights of the event included a solidarity road show by youths who marched with placards bearing inscriptions such as: “On Tax We Stand with Nigeria’s Progress,” “We Stand with President Tinubu,” “Tax Is an Investment,” “Pay Tax, Build Nigeria,” “Tax Today, Better Tomorrow,” “Our Tax, Our Future,” and “Tax Is Progress,” among others.

Ekiti 2026: Court nullifies PDP primaries, orders fresh exercise

A Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, has nullified the governorship primary of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The PDP conducted its governorship primary on November 8, 2024, during which Dr Wole Oluyede emerged the winner after defeating Dr Funso Ayeni and Mrs Funmilayo Ogun.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) omitted Oluyede and his running mate, Deji Ogunsakin, in the provisional list of candidates published on December 29, 2025 ahead of the June 20 governorship poll.

Aggrieved by the outcome of the primary, Ayeni approached the court through his counsel, Mr Kola Kolade (SAN), seeking the nullification of the exercise on the grounds that it failed to comply with the party’s constitution and guidelines.

The plaintiff contended that the PDP did not present the original and authentic list of statutory and ad hoc delegates used for the primary election, describing the omission as a fundamental breach of the party’s guidelines and the Electoral Act.

In his judgement delivered on Tuesday in the suit marked FHC/AD/CS/29/2025, Justice Babs Kuewumi held that the conduct of the primary election did not comply with the provisions of the law and the PDP constitution.

The court consequently nullified the governorship primary and ordered the PDP, in conjunction with INEC, to conduct a fresh primary election in strict compliance with the law and relevant guidelines.

Justice Kuewumi further directed that all qualified aspirants be allowed to participate in the fresh exercise to promote transparency, fairness, and internal democracy within the party.

Reacting to the ruling, counsel to Oluyede, Mr Owoseni Ajayi, expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment, stating that steps had already been taken to appeal the decision, including filing an application for a stay of execution.

The Lagos State Government has extended its condolences to celebrated Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following the tragic death of her son, Nkanu, after a reported medical incident at a private healthcare facility in Lagos on January 6.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Health, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting the health, safety, and rights of all residents.

She noted that the government is intensifying oversight of medical practice to prevent a recurrence of similar tragedies.

The state government described the incident as a painful and irreparable loss, noting that the death of a child is a profound tragedy. It expressed its sympathy to Ms. Adichie and her family, stating that its thoughts are with them during this difficult period.

Reiterating its zero tolerance for medical negligence and unprofessional conduct in any health facility, the government disclosed that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

HEFAMAA has since begun its inquiry and visited the health facility involved as part of its fact-finding process. According to the statement, the agency will carry out a comprehensive review of all allegations and reports related to the case.

As the statutory regulator for public and private health facilities in Lagos, HEFAMAA routinely investigates allegations of medical negligence and unethical practices to uphold patient safety and professional standards.

The findings, it said, would be made public at the conclusion of the process in the interest of transparency and public accountability.

The Lagos State Government assured residents that any individual or institution found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct or regulatory violations would face the full weight of the law, in line with existing legal and regulatory frameworks.
