NBA demands urgent action on ‘one chance’ syndicates

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for urgent and decisive action against criminal syndicates involved in “one chance” operations following the killing of two professionals in separate incidents.

The victims, Ms. Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem, a nurse, and Princess Chigbo Mediatrix, a lawyer and former Treasurer of the NBA Abuja Branch, were reportedly murdered after falling prey to criminals posing as commercial transport operators.

Their bodies were later discovered in different parts of Abuja.

In a statement issued by the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, described the killings as senseless and horrifying, warning that the apparent return of “one chance” crimes signalled a dangerous deterioration of security in the nation’s capital.

He said, “These were not faceless victims. They were professionals and contributors to society whose only intention was to return safely from their daily engagements.

“Their deaths underscore a frightening reality that insecurity is once again tightening its grip on Abuja.”

He noted that the city awoke to fear and sorrow as news of the killings spread, stressing that one of the victims devoted her life to saving others as a healthcare worker, while the other served the legal profession with dedication and integrity.

According to the NBA, the incidents are not isolated but part of a growing pattern in which criminal gangs masquerading as commercial drivers have turned daily commuting into a deadly gamble for residents.

“The pattern is no longer deniable. Criminal gangs, masquerading as commercial transport operators, have turned daily commuting into a deadly gamble. This situation is intolerable in any society that claims to be governed by law,” the statement read.

Osigwe said the murder of Princess Chigbo Mediatrix was deeply personal to the legal profession, describing her as a committed member of the Bar who served the NBA Abuja Branch with distinction.

“Her death is therefore not only a professional loss but a painful personal blow, and a stark reminder that lawyers, like all Nigerians, remain dangerously exposed in an environment where criminals act with impunity and citizens move in fear,” he said.

The NBA warned that the loss of the two lives went beyond personal grief and represented a serious erosion of public safety, adding that when citizens cannot commute safely and criminals operate unchecked, the foundations of social order are threatened.

The association called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant security agencies to treat the situation as a security emergency.

According to the association, Immediate, visible, and coordinated action is required to dismantle these criminal networks. Intelligence gathering, surveillance, policing of transport corridors, and targeted operations against known “one chance” syndicates must be intensified without delay.

The NBA also demanded thorough, transparent, and time-bound investigations into the killings, insisting that all those responsible — whether as perpetrators, collaborators, or enablers — must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.

“Justice must not only be promised; it must be delivered,” Osigwe said, warning that failure to act decisively would further embolden criminal elements and deepen public fear.

The NBA stressed that citizens should not have to choose between earning a living and staying alive, adding that the FCT must not become a hunting ground for criminals.

The association extended condolences to the families of the victims, the healthcare community, the NBA Abuja Branch, the wider legal profession, and residents of Abuja, noting that the deaths must serve as a turning point rather than fading into statistics or forgotten headlines.

Femi Otedola celebrates ‘role model’ Chagoury at 80

Billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has paid tributes to Sir Gilbert Chagoury, a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, on his 80th birthday.

In a message on X, Otedola hailed Chagoury as a visionary leader, mentor, and role model who has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.

Otedola credited Chagoury with building landmarks and institutions that have transformed Nigeria’s landscape, citing the iconic Banana Island and Eko Atlantic projects as testaments to his vision and courage.

He described Eko Atlantic as the “9th wonder of the modern world”.

Otedola wrote: “Happy 80th birthday to my mentor, my role model, Sir Gilbert Chagoury.

“At 80, your life stands as proof that vision, discipline, and an unwavering belief in Nigeria can truly shape history. You did not just build businesses; you built landmarks, institutions, and enduring ideas that will outlive generations.

“Without your vision, there would be no Banana Island, a bold idea that redefined what urban development could look like in Nigeria.

“And without the courage and persistence behind Eko Atlantic, much of Victoria Island and Ikoyi might today be at the mercy of the Atlantic Ocean. What many see as infrastructure, I see as foresight protecting the present while securing the future.

“Eko Atlantic remains, to me, the 9th wonder of the modern world, a testament to what is possible when vision meets courage and long-term thinking. It reflects your belief that Nigeria deserves the very best, and that Africans must build boldly for themselves.

“As you turn 80, I celebrate a life of impact, vision, and service. I wish you many more years in good health, strength, and fulfillment with the joy of seeing Nigeria continue to rise on foundations you helped lay.

“Happy birthday, sir. The story of modern Nigeria is richer because you chose to believe, build, and stay committed”.

Anthony Joshua opens up on friends’ deaths in video call with Kamaru

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has opened up about the tragic car accident that claimed two of his close friends, during a heartfelt conversation with UFC star Kamaru Usman.

The discussion, shared in a YouTube video uploaded by Usman, took place as Joshua was recovering from injuries sustained in the crash and ahead of an MMA event held in Lagos on December 30.

Joshua survived a fatal accident on December 29 along the Lagos-Ibadan Motorway, which resulted in the deaths of his friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

The boxer was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to Duchess International Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Joshua appeared in the video seated in a treatment room, with visible bandages on his head and torso.

He admitted that the reality of the loss had not yet fully dawned on him.

Usman, a former UFC welterweight champion, asked whether Ghami and Ayodele had been seated in the front of the black Lexus involved in the crash.

“One was in the front and one was behind him, on the right side. They both passed away. It still hasn’t sunk in. It still hasn’t hit me yet,” Joshua said.

“I’m sorry for that, man. You scared the world, I’ll tell you that right now,” Usman responded.

“Life is short, man. Life is short,” Joshua added. “And now look, I get to speak with you for the first time.”

“I know. It’s a funny way of moving things, you know? We thank God,” Usman replied.

Usman also reflected on the public reaction to the incident, noting how moments of tragedy often reveal the extent of a public figure’s impact beyond the criticism they routinely face.

“You scared the world. It’s crazy because obviously, we deal with the haters and all the bull**** each and every time and it sucks that it takes something serious like this to really see how many people have their eyes on you.”

Following his discharge from hospital, Joshua has since returned to the United Kingdom.

On Sunday, he broke his silence on social media, sharing a photograph of himself standing with the families of the deceased.

He captioned the post simply: “My Brother’s Keeper.”

  • Atiku won’t step aside for Obi in 2027 – Dele Momodu

Atiku won’t step aside for Obi in 2027 – Dele Momodu

Former presidential candidate and media entrepreneur Dele Momodu has ruled out any possibility of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar withdrawing from the 2027 presidential race in favour of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi.

Atiku, who was the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 presidential election, formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in November 2025, a move widely seen as a strategic step towards securing the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi, who finished third in the 2023 poll behind Atiku and winner President Bola Tinubu, also defected from the Labour Party to the ADC last week.

His defection has been interpreted by political observers as part of a broader opposition realignment aimed at mounting a serious challenge to Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The development sparked speculation that Obi could settle for a vice-presidential role on an Atiku-led ticket—claims swiftly mocked by figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo.

However, prominent Obi supporters such as political economist Pat Utomi and activist Aisha Yesufu have warned they would withdraw their support if Obi accept a deputy slot.

Recent rumours suggesting that Atiku might step aside for Obi, based on an alleged agreement for Obi to serve a single four-year term before handing over power in 2031, were firmly dismissed by Momodu.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Momodu said Atiku had no reason to abandon his ambition.

“Several people have asked me to advise former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to voluntarily withdraw from the 2027 presidential race,” Momodu said.

“When I ask them why, they say he is too old—not that he is less healthy than President Bola Tinubu.

“Out of unsubstantiated malice and prejudice, Tinubu can and should contest, but Atiku can’t and shouldn’t contest.”

Momodu argued that attempts to discredit Atiku’s ambition had become a recurring media narrative, insisting that the former vice president’s experience and record set him apart from most of his contemporaries.

“He’s certainly not a saint, but he towers above most of his peers by not being a parasite feeding on the state since he left power in 2007,” he added.
