FG signs MoU with six professional bodies to train 10m Nigerians on financial inclusion

The Federal Government on Monday flagged off a free nationwide training programme targeting 10 million Nigerians on financial inclusion and financial literacy, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with six professional bodies.

Vice President Kashim Shettima said Nigeria would only reap bountifully from its demographic dividend if young people and women were deliberately equipped with relevant skills and strong ethical grounding to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

The programme, being implemented by the Office of the Vice President through the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion (PreCEFI), is designed to empower Nigerians, particularly youths and women, with essential financial skills, investment knowledge and digital competencies for sustainable wealth creation.

Under the MoU, the Federal Government will collaborate with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, the National Institute of Credit Administration (NICA), the Chartered Risk Management Institute (CRMI) and the Nigeria Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NIIE) to jointly design training programmes, certification pathways, digital skills initiatives and mentorship platforms.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President described the agreement as more than a formal document.

In a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said “it is a strategic national investment in capacity as infrastructure—the human, institutional and ethical foundations upon which inclusive growth must rest”.

He explained that the Aso Accord on Economic and Financial Inclusion, which PreCEFI is mandated to implement, recognises that financial inclusion goes beyond access.

“Financial inclusion is not achieved by access alone, but by competence, trust and capability. We cannot build a one-trillion-dollar economy on weak skills, fragmented standards or disconnected professional ecosystems,” he said.

According to him, the framework created by the MoU would harness the collective expertise of the professional bodies to advance inclusion through capacity building, advocacy, digital transformation, youth empowerment and support for small and medium practitioners.

Shettima stressed that inclusion would remain a slogan without professionals who understand MSME formalisation, credit risk beyond collateral, consumer protection, digital risk management and innovation-driven enterprise development.

He charged PreCEFI and the partner institutions to treat the MoU as a “living platform for execution” rather than a ceremonial agreement.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, I hereby flag off the free training of 10 million Nigerians, with priority for women and youth across the country,” the Vice President declared.

In his remarks, the Technical Adviser to the President on Economic and Financial Inclusion, Dr Nurudeen Abubakar Zauro, said exclusion was often driven by limited skills and weak institutional capacity rather than lack of access alone.

“Financial inclusion is achieved when people and institutions are equipped to use infrastructure responsibly, productively and sustainably,” he said.

Earlier, the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, commended the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, saying visible improvements in the economy informed the decision to support the initiative.

He assured of the professional bodies’ commitment to the success of the programme, describing their participation as an institutional honour.

Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of WAWU Africa, the technical partner for the programme, Mr Emmanuel Lennox, pledged the organisation’s readiness to deliver the digital platform and enabling environment required for the project.

The highlight of the event was the formal signing of the MoU between the Federal Government and the six professional bodies for the nationwide capacity-building programme.

Cross River Governor Bassey Edet Otu at the weekend said the award of a Doctorate (Honoris Causa) by the Modibbo Adama University, Yola as well as The Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year was a charge on him to do more.

He dedicated the two awards to Cross Riverians at home and in the diaspora and partners who have contributed to the state’s progress.

Otu won both laurels on the same day with the prestigious The Sun Newspaper award coming on the heels of the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at a colourful ceremony at the Eko Hotels and Event Centre, Lagos.

“This award is dedicated to all Cross Riverians, both home and abroad, and to everyone who has worked to take us to where we are today,” Otu said amid loud cheers from supporters who accompanied him to the event. “I deeply appreciate the love and support. I love all of you.”

Expressing gratitude to The Sun Newspaper, the Governor described the honour as both a recognition of collective effort and a renewed call to greater service, noting that the awards initiative has, over the years, promoted excellence and national development.

    • Abdullahi Abdulrahaman

The immediate past sole administrator of Maru Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Hon. Yusuf Sani Bindin, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Zamfara State chapter of the APC disclosed that Bindin served as sole administrator of Maru Local Government Area for one year and, in recognition of his political influence, was later appointed Programme Manager at the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), a position he held until his resignation from the PDP.

In a statement issued by the APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris Gusau, the party described Bindin’s hometown as a political stronghold in Maru Local Government Area, noting his wide acceptance and strong grassroots followership.

According to the statement, Bindin accused the PDP-led government in the state of being controlled by a few individuals who, he claimed, have sidelined Governor Dauda Lawal for their personal interests.

The statement further quoted him as saying that more than two years into the Lawal administration, it has become increasingly difficult for stakeholders to secure an audience with the governor to engage in constructive discussions aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

Bindin said his decision to join the APC, despite the party being in opposition in the state, followed extensive consultations with his supporters and a shared conclusion that the PDP-led government had failed and was no longer worthy of their support.

He expressed gratitude to the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, for warmly receiving him and his supporters into the APC.

Receiving the new entrants at a gathering held at his residence in Abuja, Matawalle commended their decision, describing it as timely and patriotic.

He said the APC remains an inclusive party and will continue to welcome politicians of all backgrounds from opposition parties, particularly the PDP, in Zamfara State.

The minister assured the defectors that they would enjoy all rights and benefits accorded to APC members at all times.

2027: ADC inaugurates southwest excos, pledges to strengthen party

African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the southwest zone on Saturday vowed to strengthen the party and empower citizens in the region.

The zonal chairman, Rahman Owokoniran gave the assurance in his remarks shortly after he was sworn in alongside other zonal executive members of the party at an event which held at the Ibadan Business School, Bodija, Ibadan.

The ceremony was attended by party leaders from across the zone, including the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, Jide Adeniji; and state chairmen of the party, among others.

Other Zonal leaders who were sworn in include: Assistant National Secretary (S/W Zonal Secretary) – Arc Bashir Lawal (Oyo State); Deputy National Woman Leader- Mrs Yemisi Afolabi (Ekiti State); Ex-officio- Prof Olabode Ayorinde (Ondo State); Deputy National Financial Secretary – Hon Rotimi George Taylor (Ogun State) and Deputy National Coordinator (Diaspora)- Hon Daniel Akene (Ekiti State)

Others are: Assistant National Woman Leader (S/W Zonal Woman Leader)- Hon Sidikat Ojo (Ondo State); Assistant National Youth Leader- Oluwaseyi Akinde (Lagos State); Director of Communication Dr Babatunde Oke (Osun State); Assistant National Organising Secretary -Sakiru Ademola Adekoya (Ogun State) and Hon. Rasak Iyowawi immediate Southwest Chairman

In his inaugural speech, Owokoniran expressed gratitude to the party members and stakeholders who supported his emergence as the new Zonal Chairman, acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices of ADC members, particularly those who have remained steadfast over the years, and those who have recently joined the party.

The newly inaugurated Southwest Zonal Chairman emphasized the need for the party to deepen grassroots participation and offer Nigerians a credible, democratic voice to fight poverty and maintain dignity.

The ADC leader also highlighted the socioeconomic challenges facing the people of the Southwest, including poverty, food shortages, unemployment, insecurity, and declining living standards.

He condemned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s practices, which he alleged were designed to manipulate and control the poor and vulnerable.

Owokoniran promised to work towards building a party that restores hope, dignity, and opportunity for Nigerians.

He pledged to inspire citizen participation and offer a people-focused approach to governance in the region, calling on party members to work together with courage, commitment, and determination to achieve the desired outcome.

He said, “The ADC must offer the people of the Southwest a credible, democratic voice to fight poverty, protect human dignity and provide a safe environment for citizens to thrive in their communities.”

Owokoniran also expressed concern about the alleged use of market women and men as political tools by the ruling party, as well as the distribution of palliatives as a means of influencing loyalty.

He vowed to address the issues and promote democratic values and principles in the region.

In his remarks, the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, said the inauguration was necessary as the Southwest was the only geopolitical zone without a zonal leadership.

He urged party members not to allow external forces to destabilise the zone, warning that those uncomfortable with the coalition arrangement should retrace their steps.

Ajadi said widespread hardship had pushed many Nigerians towards the ADC, adding that those outside the coalition far outnumber those within it.

Also speaking, Engr. Jide Adeniji described Owokoniran as a listening and God-fearing leader, expressing confidence in his ability to unite and strengthen the party in the region.

The Oyo State Chairman of the ADC, Yinka Olona, urged members to rally behind the new zonal chairman, saying collective support was crucial for the party’s success in upcoming elections.

  • Tinubu’s reform gains, not political opportunism, driving governors to APC — DOJ

Tinubu’s reform gains, not political opportunism, driving governors to APC — DOJ

A political support group, Disciples of Jagaban Worldwide (DOJ), has defended the recent wave of governors aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the development as a response to “visible governance outcomes” rather than political opportunism.

In a statement issued by Honourable Comrade Abdulhakeem Alawuje, the group said the decision by some state governors to identify with the President’s reform agenda should not be misunderstood, insisting it was rooted in practical governance considerations.

Alawuje argued that beyond political rhetoric, there is currently no clearly articulated alternative vision from opposition blocs capable of addressing Nigeria’s complex economic and governance challenges, adding that “politics without solutions cannot compete with governance anchored on results.”

He linked the governors’ alignment to recent fiscal reforms, particularly the halt to what he described as reckless money printing for FAAC allocations and efforts to reduce the national budget deficit, which he said had restored fiscal discipline and improved states’ financial stability.

According to him, many states are now able to meet salary obligations without resorting to borrowing, thereby escaping what he termed destructive debt cycles that previously constrained development efforts at subnational levels.

The statement also cited the establishment of the Credit Corporation of Nigeria (CreditCorp) and the National Credit Guarantee Company (NCGC) as policies expanding access to affordable credit for states, small businesses and industries, stimulating economic activities beyond federal allocations.

Alawuje further referenced the Naira-for-Crude policy, local refinery activation, and major infrastructure investments, including legacy highway projects and regional CNG transport initiatives, as signals that have renewed investor confidence across states.

He added that the reported growth in non-oil exports and the President’s push for local government autonomy have strengthened grassroots development, while human capital programmes such as 3MTTT and TVET are expected to boost youth employment and long-term productivity.

The group urged critics to focus on building a credible opposition based on ideas and solutions, maintaining that the governors’ decisions reflect “governance logic, not political sentiment,” and called for unity and patience as reforms take root.

ISWAP second-in-command killed as military intensifies offensive in Sambisa forest

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, a military offensive in the North East, have killed the Second-in-Command of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), Abu Khalid, in the Sambisa forest area of Borno State.

This came barely 24 hours after they killed a top ISWAP commander, known as Julaibib, during a fierce battle around Kimba in Damboa Local Government Area of the state.

A military source told The Nation on Sunday that Abu Khalid, identified as the Second-in-Command of Boko Haram in the Sambisa forest, was killed alongside 10 others, during a night operation on Saturday.

According to the source, Abu Khalid was a key figure within the terrorist hierarchy, coordinating operations and logistics in the Sambisa axis.

He said the troops engaged the terrorists in the Komala general area of Konduga Local Government Area during a night offensive at about 11:00 p.m., resulting in the killing of the terrorist leader and his foot soldiers.

The source said troops recovered five AK-47 rifles, magazines, several bicycles, assorted logistics and food items, and a large cache of medical supplies after the successful engagement.

“No casualty was recorded among troops during the operation.

“Troops’ morale remains high as clearance operations continue across the Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains, Timbuktu Triangle and other known hideouts of Boko Haram and ISWAP in the North East region,” the source said.

While reaffirming the troops’ commitment to sustaining the tempo of operations until all terrorist elements are neutralised and lasting peace and economic stability are restored to the region, the source said the military high command had “commended the troops for their sacrifices and dedication in the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities in the North East region, and urged them to sustain the operational tempo.”

    • …As Akinwunmi joins House of Rep race

Scores of supporters and loyalists of former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, have defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a significant political watershed in the state.

The loyalists, led by Balarabe Abiodun Akinwunmi, a known associate of Jegede, formally announced their defection at the weekend in Akure, aligning with the Atiku Abubakar led coalition-backed ADC.

Jegede, a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice under ex-Governor Olusegun Mimiko, was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2016 and 2020 elections, where he contested against the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

Speaking during the event, Akinwunmi attributed their decision to the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP at both the state and national levels, saying the move was based on principle rather than political convenience.

“Today, I, Balarabe Abiodun Akinwunmi, have chosen to stand with the people and, by the grace of God, I have joined the ADC. From today, we shall mobilise house-to-house, street-to-street, unit-to-unit, and ward-by-ward to demonstrate our strength.

“We will show them on election day, the power of the people, and I believe God is with us, and we shall triumph,” he said.

Akinwunmi, who is aspiring to represent Akure North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also pledged continued engagement with the grassroots and assured supporters of his commitment to their welfare.

He expressed confidence that the ADC would provide credible leadership and help rescue the state and the country from what he described as the grip of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Welcoming the defectors at the party’s Ijomu/Obanla Council Ward, the ADC Chairman Mukaila Ajiboye commended Akinwunmi and his supporters for their bold and courageous decision to join the ADC.

Ajiboye said the defection is a blooster and would also strengthen the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He, however, promised that the defectors would be fully integrated and treated equally within the party structure.

  • Former Ekiti Commissioner Otitoju buries wife Oladunni Grace in Lagos

Former Ekiti Commissioner Otitoju buries wife Oladunni Grace in Lagos

Family members, friends and church faithful on Friday gathered at the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, for the funeral Mass of Lady Oladunni Grace Otitoju.

    She was 63.

She was the wife of a former Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Culture, Sports and Social Development, Sir Kayode Otitoju, and was also mourned by professional colleagues and associates who came to pay their last respects.

The solemn Mass, marked by hymns, scripture readings and tributes, celebrated the life of a woman widely described as compassionate, devoted to family, service-oriented and deeply rooted in her Catholic faith.

Late Oladunni Grace Otitoju (née Ogunniyi) was born on November 16, 1962, in Ido-Ani, Ondo State, as the second child of her parents.

Her father, Mr Cornelius A. Ogunniyi, was a teacher and church pianist from Alade, Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, while her mother, Mrs Comfort B. Olateru, a registered nurse from Owo, rose to the rank of matron at the General Hospital, Osogbo, Osun State.

From an early age, Oladunni showed a deep love for music and singing, a passion that later found expression in church service.

She was a foundation member of the choir at the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy, Lekki, where she worshipped with her family.

Family members recalled that part of her childhood was spent in Owo under the care of her grand-aunt, fondly called Mama Eleni, who nurtured her and her elder sister with affection and discipline.

The Gospel reading for the funeral Mass was taken from John 11:21–27, where Jesus declares, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”

Drawing his homily from the passage, the Parish Priest, Rev. Msgr. Pascal Nwaezeapu, urged Christians to hold firmly to their faith in the resurrection, even in moments of deep loss.

He described the late Oladunni as a woman who lived a life of faith, service and love, noting that death, for believers, is not the end but a transition to eternal life.

“Our consolation,” he said, “is in Christ who assures us that whoever believes in Him, even though he dies, shall live.”

In an emotional tribute titled, “Fare Thee Well, My Jewel of Inestimable Value,” her widower, Sir Kayode Otitoju, described his late wife as his partner, best friend and unwavering support system of nearly 45 years.

According to him, they first exchanged marital vows on April 25, 1981, at the Marriage Registry, Mapo Hall, Ibadan, and later solemnised their union on January 2, 1999, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos.

“Our love story blossomed into an extraordinary union,” he said, adding that the marriage was blessed with five children , Tosin, Kunmi, Taiwo, Kehinde and Femi Otitoju, all alumni of Howard University, Washington DC, and two grandchildren.

Sir Kayode noted that his wife’s legacy lives on through her service in the Nigerian Ports Authority, where she worked for nearly 25 years, her contributions to the Church of Divine Mercy Choir, the Lekki Farms, and her active membership of the Knights of St. Mulumba and Ladies of St. Mulumba.

“She was exceptional as a wife, mother and grandmother. Her kindness, compassion, innovation and courage touched many lives,” he said.

The first child of the deceased, Oluwatosin Otitoju, in a reflective tribute, described his mother as diligent, nurturing and multi-talented, recounting her devotion to family life, her professional career and her spiritual growth.

Condolence messages poured in from prominent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi, current Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), Ekiti State APC Chairman Shola Eleshin, and several leaders of the Knights of St. Mulumba.

In his message, the Immediate Past Supreme Knight of KSM Nigeria, Sir Charles Mbelede, prayed for God to grant her eternal rest, while the Grand Knight of KSM Lekki Sub-Council, Sir Chuka Onwuchekwa, described her death as shocking and prayed for divine comfort for the family.

The funeral Mass was officiated by Rev. Msgr. Pascal Nwaezeapu, assisted by Fr. Stephen Nnama, Fr. Philip Sosu-Mobee, Fr. Anthony Onyema, with the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate, Lekki, also in attendance.

Late Lady Oladunni Grace Otitoju passed on Saturday, November 22, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, six days after her 63rd birthday. She is survived by her husband, five children and two grandchildren.

On Thursday , a service of songs was held at the church ahead of the burial, attracting family members, friends and associates who came to celebrate her life in hymns and worship.

Those in attendance were adorned in colourful adire attire, the chosen dress code for the service, in honour of the late Oladunni Grace Otitoju’s love for the traditional fabric.

    • Says court martial will be free, fair

Defence Minister Christopher Musa declared yesterday that the suspects being detained in connection with the recent alleged coup plotting in the country must have been fully aware of the seriousness of their actions.

“They must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” Musa, a retired general, told the Turkish national public broadcaster TRT.

He spoke against the background of media reports quoting some relations of the suspects as alleging witch hunt in the arrests.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in a statement on Monday confirmed a coup plot against the government.

It said investigations conducted in line with established military procedures revealed that some personnel were involved in the alleged coup plot.

It said the affected officers will be arraigned before relevant military judicial panels in due course.

Musa in his TRT interview said the suspects knew the consequences of their action, “and I’m sure they are ready to face the wrath.”

He confirmed that they would face court-martial proceedings, which he described as free and fair, allowing them legal representation to defend themselves.

He said despite the offence allegedly committed by the suspects, government “is ensuring that their families are treated fairly.”

He added: “Their family members are not left alone. The government is making sure that their wives and children are looked after.”

The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Samaila Uba, said on Monday that investigations into the alleged coup plot had been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations.

He said: “The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.

“The findings have identified a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.

“Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

“This ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.”

The defence spokesperson said the actions being taken against the affected officers are “purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”

Uba said the armed forces remained resolute in maintaining the “highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.”
