Ambassador Oke, a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, served as Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

He earlier represented Nigeria at the Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations in London and is widely regarded for his extensive diplomatic and intelligence background.

A technical committee rated him the best among those considered for ministerial posting during the Buhari Administration. The committee considered his impeccable pedigree on international relations.

But before the name was announced, a former Oyo State governor rushed to the Presidency and engineered the removal of his name and replaced it with his own stooge.

Col. Are will be bringing decades of national security experience to the diplomatic corps, having served as Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) from 1999 to 2007 and later as National Security Adviser (NSA) in 2010.

In view of the emerging security situation, I have decided to declare a nationwide security emergency and order additional recruitment into the Armed Forces.

By this declaration, the police and the army are authorised to recruit more personnel. The police will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total to 50,000.

Although I had previously approved the nationwide upgrade of police training facilities, the police authorities are, by this statement, authorised to use various National Youth Service Corps camps as training depots.

The officers being withdrawn from VIP guard duties should undergo crash training to debrief them and deliver more efficient police services when deployed to security-challenged areas of the country.

The DSS also has my authority to immediately deploy all the forest guards already trained to flush out the terrorists and bandits lurking in our forests. The agency also has my directive to recruit more men to man the forests. There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil.

My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas. The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.

Let me take this moment to commend our security agencies for working together to secure the release of the 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and the 38 worshippers in Kwara State. We will continue to sustain the efforts to rescue the remaining students of Catholic School in Niger State and other Nigerians still being held hostage.

To the leadership and rank and file of our Armed Forces, I commend your courage and your sacrifice. This is a challenging moment for our nation and for the military institution itself. I charge you to remain resolute, to restore peace across all theatres of operation, and to uphold the highest standards of discipline and integrity. There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence. The Nigerian people are counting on you, and this administration will provide the support you need to succeed.

In addition, our administration will support state governments which have set up security outfits to safeguard their people from the terrorists bent on disrupting our national peace.

I call on the National Assembly to begin reviewing our laws to allow states that require state police to establish them.

States should rethink establishing boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security. Mosques and churches should constantly seek police and other security protection when they gather for prayers, especially in vulnerable areas.

Our administration created the Livestock Ministry to address the persistent clashes between herders and farmers. I call on all herder associations to take advantage of it, end open grazing and surrender illegal weapons.

Ranching is now the path forward for sustainable livestock farming and national harmony. The Federal Government, in collaboration with the states, will work with you to solve this problem, once and for all.

I sympathise with the families who have lost their loved ones in recent attacks on soft targets in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara States. I also pay tribute to our brave soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, including Brig-Gen. Musa Uba.

Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness. This administration has the courage and determination to keep the country safe and ensure our citizens live in peace.

    • From Ahmed Baba Ahmed, Birnin Kebbi

The wife of Kebbi State Governor Hajiya Zainab Idris has urged parents not to withdraw their children reunited with them yesterday after nine days in captivity from school.

She spoke during the reunification of parents and pupils at the Government House in Birnin-Kebbi.

She expressed happiness that none of the girls was violated by their abductors during the traumatic days.

She added that the 24 girl had been taken to the hospital for medical checkup.

“You must not deny them education because of this incident. They must go back. Government is already putting in place necessary measures for their safety,” she said.

Governor Nasir Idris said the abduction of the Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School Maga caused their parents, the people of the state and his government sleepless nights.

“Since the pupils were taken by the bandits about nine days ago, the parents had been traumatised, but we thank God that it didn’t take long before the security personnel deployed to search for them were able to rescue them,” he said.

They were brought to Birnin-Kebbi, the state capital, on Tuesday night from Bagega forest in Anka local government area of Zamfara State, where the abductors kept them.

The schoolgirls were then handed over to their parents by the governor.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halimatu Bande, said the period of the girls’ captivity was a trying period for the state.

“We thank those who stood with us through this period and the security personnel who helped to rescue our girls,” she said.

Senate seeks review of firearm law to allow citizens own guns

    • Barau rallies states, citizens behind Tinubu’s push to defeat insecurity

A resolution urging the Federal Government to review the firearm laws to allow responsible citizens to own guns was yesterday passed by the Senate.

The Red Chamber’s decision was triggered by the escalating insecurity in Kwara, Kebbi and Niger states.

The resolution followed consideration and adoption of a motion titled: “Urgent need to address escalating insecurity in Kwara, Kebbi and Niger States.”

In his lead debate, Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South), who sponsored the motion, highlighted recent attacks on schools, worship centres, and rural communities.

He noted the November 18 attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, where two worshippers were killed and 38 others abducted.

The worshippers were released on Sunday.

In their contributions, senators urged immediate action to curb the rising wave of banditry, kidnapping and violent crimes.

They warned that mass school abductions and persistent raids have forced closures of schools, including 47 unity schools, disrupting the education of thousands of children.

The lawmakers commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for cancelling foreign trips to coordinate security responses, which led to the release of 38 abductees in Kwara and the 24 Kebbi schoolgirls.

The Senate also called on communities in the affected states and across Nigeria to remain vigilant, united and supportive of security agencies while resisting internal collaborators who undermine national safety.

According to the senators, the firearm laws should reflect current security challenges, similar to over 175 countries where responsible citizens are permitted to legally own guns.

Expressing concern over the worsening insecurity across the land, they urged the executive to act decisively against terrorists, bandits and kidnappers, who continue to unleash terror on communities.

The lawmakers insisted that internal sabotage within security agencies must be investigated without delay.

Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) raised the alarm over alleged security failures, citing Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris’ revelation that troops were withdrawn from a community shortly before 24 schoolgirls were abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga.

“What Nigerians want to know is — who ordered the withdrawal?” Abaribe queried.

“If I were the President, I would summon the commander immediately. Someone must account for that decision.”

Adams Oshiomhole, who hailed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening the armed forces, warned that Nigeria must adopt fresh strategies.

He also demanded the disclosure of the identity of the officer who authorised the withdrawal of troops from the attacked Kebbi school.

Oshiomhole said: “Nigerians are entitled to know who issued that order. The President is doing his best, but we must do things differently.”

Henry Seriake Dickson lamented the killing of Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba by terrorists, describing it as evidence of internal compromise within security operations.

“It is not ordinary to lose a Brigadier-General. Our country is losing prestige, and public trust in military operations is declining.”

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, urged swift reforms of Nigeria security architecture, warning that time was running out.

“Yes, we are relieved that 38 abducted victims from Kwara have been rescued, but we are not celebrating — the kidnappers are still roaming free,” Bamidele said.

He added that the Senate must also review and reposition its Committee on Security and Intelligence for greater effectiveness.

Bamidele rejected suggestions that the National Assembly should shut down to signal seriousness, saying such an action would amount to abandoning responsibility.

“This is no time for theatrics. Lives are at stake,” the Senate leader said.

Barau drums up support for Tinubu

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended the President’s decisive and sustained efforts toward curbing insecurity. He urged states, corporate bodies and citizens to actively support the ongoing fight.

Barau argued that the security challenges are not the responsibility of the Federal Government alone and require collective action to achieve lasting results.

He said: “Mr. President is doing extremely well. All his efforts should be complemented by all Nigerians – state governments, private organisations, even ordinary citizens.

“This is an issue for every Nigerian to admit and confront. With the trend and effort the President is putting in, we shall surmount this problem.”

He particularly called on state governments to invest in surveillance infrastructure, intelligence channels and operational logistics to support federal security agencies.

According to him, insecurity can be defeated faster if every state builds systems to monitor forests and communities within their jurisdiction.

Barau said: “State governments should help with necessary hardware and surveillance. If each state creates facilities to monitor activities in forests and local areas, the military can respond more effectively.

“When this is replicated nationwide, the results will come quickly.”

Describing Tinubu as “a leader working daily to secure the country,” Barau referenced the President’s decision to shelve his trip to South Africa for the G20 Summit to focus on national security – an action he said contributed to the recent rescue of abducted victims in Kebbi State.

“The President is serious about ending insecurity. He inherited this problem, but he is committed, and with collective support, this challenge will be addressed in a short time,” he added.

On the Senate’s resolutions regarding national security, Barau said the leadership of the Senate would meet with the President to convey the urgency of the decisions taken.

He expressed confidence that Tinubu would give full attention to the recommendations.

Barau also weighed in on renewed calls for state police, stating that the priority should be funding, training and equipping security personnel rather than the label attached to the structure.

“It is not about the nomenclature. Even the federal police need better training and funding – which the President has begun addressing. What matters is capacity, not just naming.” he said.

    Okpebholo declares war on criminals

With a charge to ensure that criminals do not turn Edo to a safe haven, Governor Monday Okpebholo, yesterday met with heads of security services in the state.

The meeting followed a viral video in which a self-acclaimed terrorist threatened to attack Edo Central Senatorial district.

In the video, the individual claimed presence around Ekpoma and adjoining communities, issuing threats.

Confirming the meeting in a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor, Fred Itua, said the security chiefs briefed the governor on the issue.

Itua assured Edo residents that security was top-tier priority for the Governor, adding that emerging threats were being confronted.

NUT demands immediate action to end attacks on schools

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called for an immediate and decisive action to end the rising wave of attacks on schools across the country.

The NUT National President, Audu Amba, who made the call at a news conference in Abuja, condemned the recent attacks in Kebbi and Niger States, describing them as “barbaric, unacceptable and a direct assault on the foundation of Nigeria’s education system.”

He expressed outrage over the killing of a Vice Principal and a security guard, and the abduction of 25 female students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga in Danko-Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State.

He also condemned the kidnapping of over 300 pupils and students, along with 12 staff members, from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara LGA of Niger State.

“The NUT stands with the families of the abducted children, our colleague, the Vice Principal who was gruesomely murdered, and other victims of these dastardly attacks.

“We share in their grief, anguish and unimaginable pains, and we demand the immediate release of the innocent children. Every moment they remain in captivity is a scar on our collective conscience.

“We also stand in solidarity with the government and people of the affected States during this trying time.

“We call on all relevant authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of this brutal and conscienceless crime are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.

Amba lamented that the latest incidents followed a disturbing pattern of mass abductions that have plagued Nigerian schools for over a decade, recalling the abduction of 276 Chibok schoolgirls in Borno State in 2014.

He added that 110 Dapchi girls, including Leah Sharibu in 2018, 39 students of Federal College of Forestry, Kaduna in 2021 and 200 students of Government Secondary School, Jangebe in 2021 were also abducted.

He added that students and 44 staff of Zamfara College of Agriculture in 2021,121 Bethel Baptist High School students in Kaduna in 2021, and 287 students in Kuriga, Kaduna State in 2024 were also abducted.

According to him, these tragedies represent “a horrifying failure” to implement the Safe Schools Declaration and other security frameworks designed to protect educational institutions.

He warned that the increasing attacks had forced the closure of some schools, a development it described as “mortgaging the future of Nigerian children.”

“The classroom is supposed to be a sanctuary for nurturing young minds. Destroying learning environments with violence spells doom not only for our children but for the nation.

“We also urge security agencies to leave no stone unturned in strengthening security not only around all schools, but also in all the nooks and crannies of the country.

“This is to ensure that all Nigerians and residents are protected from the inhuman and barbaric activities of terrorists and bandits in the country,” he said.
