Osimhen: I’m proud of Super Eagles’ resilience

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has opened up about his frustration after missing a crucial chance during Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time victory against Gabon, but says he is proud of the team’s resilience and mentality in securing the win.

Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, recovered strongly from the setback to score twice in extra time as Nigeria booked their place in the African play-off final for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria thought they had sealed the match in regulation time when Akor Adams scored in the 78th minute, but Mario Lemina equalised for Gabon in the 89th minute to force extra time in rainy Rabat. Chidera Ejuke put Nigeria ahead again before Osimhen struck twice to complete the job. Gabon’s only major moment came from a VAR-overturned penalty claim.

Reflecting on his missed one-on-one effort before the final whistle, Osimhen admitted it weighed heavily on him.

“I was gutted as a person and as a striker. I had to keep it moving. It was bad,” he said. “Immediately I missed the opportunity, the referee said we are going to extra time. I told my teammates sorry, I will correct it in extra time.”

He explained how he battled disappointment to deliver when it mattered most.

“If I let it go inside me, I wouldn’t have scored the two goals. As a striker, you score the ones people believe you can’t score and miss the ones people think you can score. I make mistakes as a human, but congratulations to the team.”

‘DR Congo will play Nigeria with confidence’

DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has admitted that his side will be the underdogs when they face Nigeria in Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs final.

The Leopards booked their place in the showdown after a tense 1-0 victory over Cameroon, while the Super Eagles powered through with an emphatic 4-1 win against Gabon.

Speaking before the crucial encounter against Nigeria, the 49-year-old tactician praised Nigeria’s quality and acknowledged the gulf in experience and ranking between both teams.

‘We beat a good Cameroon team, who took a lot of risks at the end of the match to score. And then there is Nigeria, which remains one of the best in Africa,” Sébastien Desabre said at the post-match press conference after his side’s hard-fought win over Cameroon.

Desabre, however, expressed confidence in his team’s steady progress and promised that DR Congo will approach the final with full commitment.

“We must move forward, we’re making progress. We took a good step today and we will have another opportunity against Nigeria to show what we are capable of,” he added.

    • More terrorists neutralised in Northeast, 67 victims rescued

    By Musa Umar Bologi, Abuja

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has assured that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) will not relent but will reclaim every inch of territory occupied by terrorists.

He gave the assurance, on Friday, during an operational visit to the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 2/213 Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Katsina, on Friday.

The NAF boss charged personnel to intensify efforts in fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to decisively eliminate all threats to the safety and security of Nigerians.

“We cannot relent for a moment. The nation is counting on us to restore peace and reclaim every inch of territory challenged by insurgents and criminals,” he said.

The CAS noted that Nigeria’s security environment has become increasingly complex, with ruthless non-state actors spreading violence and causing significant loss of innocent lives. He urged personnel to remain “agile, innovative, and ruthlessly precise” in confronting security threats.

Aneke emphasised the unprecedented support the NAF has received from the federal government, including the acquisition of modern platforms, advanced weaponry, and enhanced professional training, which, he said, has placed a solemn responsibility on the Air Force.

The NAF boss commended the troops for their courage, precision, and professionalism in striking the adversaries despite the operational challenges in the region, assuring the total elimination of security threats in all parts of the country.

“We will not rest until every threat to our sovereignty is neutralised,” he said.

“Wherever they hide, whether in forests, valleys, or remote villages, our forces will find them, and we will strike with precision.

“Our mission is clear: to hunt them down and to protect our people.”

The CAS urged personnel to sustain the operational momentum and ensure that every mission reflects the NAF’s core values of discipline, service, and patriotism.

He assured that welfare of personnel remains the NAF’s top priority, stressing that the fight against insecurity must go hand-in-hand with the well-being of personnel.

“A force that fights hard must also live well. Under my leadership, your welfare, training, and equipment will match your courage in the field.

“You are the nation’s shield, and your safety and morale are non-negotiable,” the said

The NAF boss said the service would continue to invest in modern capabilities, intelligence systems, and technology-driven operations to secure lasting dominance in the air and impact on the ground.

Muslims were first victims of Boko Haram in Nigeria – AU chair

Mahmoud Youssouf, chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has said that there are no targeted Christian killings in northern Nigeria.

Speaking with reporters at the United Nations in New York, Youssouf said the complexity of the security situation in northern Nigeria cannot be described as Christian genocide.

He said the first victims of Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria were Muslims and not Christians.

“The first victims of Boko Haram are Muslims, not Christians. And I’m saying it with documented references,” he said.

“The complexity of northern part of Nigeria should not be taken that easily. So, what we are saying to those statements (Christian genocide claims) is that the African continent is very complex.

“It is not that easy to describe these situations with such very easy words that can be used in not reasonable way.

“That is why the AU commission is very clear about that. We have made it clear in our statement and communique and we would like to stress again that there is no genocide in northern Nigeria.”

“What’s going on in northern part of Nigeria has nothing to do with the kind of atrocities we see in Sudan or in some part of eastern DRC.

“Think twice before… making such statements…The first victims of Boko Haram are Muslims, not Christians,” said Youssouf.

Misinformation has become a silent bomb, says IGP

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has lamented the devastating impact of misinformation, saying it has become a silent time bomb.

The police chief noted that a single false post is capable of causing chaos faster than a bullet can travel.

Egbetokun said this when the leadership of the Bloggers and Vloggers, Content Creators Association of Nigeria (BAVCCA) visited him in Abuja.

The IGP said: “Misinformation has become a silent bomb; it does not destroy buildings; it destroys trust. A single false post can cause chaos faster than a bullet can travel.”

According to a statement signed by the National President, BAVCCA, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, and National Secretary, Tabuko Kennedy, the organisation noted that the spread of falsehood is not a vice peculiar to bloggers, but a national security threat that demands collective action.

The group said it would submit the Digital Content Practitioners (Registration and Regulation) Bill, 2025 to the National Assembly.

“The bill seeks: Mandatory registration of all bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, social media influencers, and online journalists with a National Digital Content Registry.

Paystack suspends cofounder over sexual misconduct allegations

    • Ex-partner alleges abuse, manipulation

Paystack, an online payment solutions company, has suspended its co-founder Ezra Olubi over allegations that border on sexual misconduct.

The allegations were further boosted by the resurfacing of disturbing past tweets.

Mr Olubi had posted several controversial tweets dating as far back as 2010, including sexually explicit jokes and comments that resurfaced online.

A woman who previously had a relationship with Olubi had published her personal complaints online on Wednesday, triggering renewed attention and widespread circulation of his old, controversial tweets.

According to TechCabal, Paystack has issued a statement announcing Olubi’s suspension from his duties and responsibilities, pending the investigation’s outcome.

“Paystack is aware of the allegations involving our Co-founder, Ezra Olubi.

“We take matters of this nature extremely seriously.

“Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation.”

“Out of respect for the individuals involved and to protect the integrity of the process, we will not be commenting further until the investigation is complete,” Paystack said.

In the past couple of days, Olubi has come under heavy fire following recent allegations of sexual misconduct.

Instablog reports that Max Obae, also known as Maki, a former partner of the Paystack co-founder, brought allegations of manipulation, abusive behaviour, and disturbing misconduct during and before their relationship.

In a live audio recording, which trended on the internet, Maki said she entered a polyamorous relationship with Mr Olubi in September 2023 involving herself and her wife.

She also alleged that the founder was sexually involved with a junior colleague of his.

Maki claimed she later became concerned about Olubi’s pattern of control, emotional detachment, and alleged mistreatment of domestic workers, describing his behaviour as manipulative, demeaning, and “psychotic.”

According to her, the Babcock University graduate pretended to be gay to lure feminists into his circle and slowly break the feminism out of them, through depressing humiliation rituals, using them as sex objects and keeping them in check with money.

Following Maki’s expose, netizens dug up Mr Olubi’s old posts, which some have described as disturbing and reeking of depravity.

The posts on his now-deactivated X account covered topics from sexual harassment to downright paedophilia and subtle bestiality. The founder spared no words in describing his escapades.

In one of the posts, Mr Olubi, 39, claimed that having sex with a minor cures HIV, urging those living with the virus to explore that as an option.

“On a lighter note, I hear sex with a minor cures HIV. So my +ve followers, help yourselves. Ur neighbour’s daughter isn’t looking bad today,” he wrote.

He also claimed that he secretly records his female friends in his bathroom.

“I judge my female friends by the sound their pee makes. Thanks to the audio recorder in my bathroom,” a tweet from 2012 read.

He also, among many other things, claims to “like them young, innocent and clueless.”

Born on 12 November 1986, Ezra Olubi is an IT expert, software engineer, mobile app developer, and entrepreneur.

He graduated from Babcock University in Nigeria, where he studied computer science alongside Shola Akinlade.

After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree, he worked with North Ocean Logistics and Solutions Limited, Softcom Imagio Limited, Softcom Limited Nigeria, Jobberman Limited, Delivery Science Incorporation, Alexander Haring Limited, and Paystack.

In 2015, Mr Olubi co-founded Paystack alongside Shola Akinlade.

Paystack grew to become the leading payment system in Nigeria. In 2020, it was acquired by Stripe, a payment processing and software programming company, for USD 200 million.

In 2022, the late former president Muhammadu Buhari made him a member of the Order of the Niger (OON).

    Ex-partner alleges abuse, manipulation

Media personality Max Obae has accused Olubi of abuse, manipulation and misconduct.

In a deeply emotional and lengthy public disclosure, Max Obae, former partner of the Paystack co-founder, has come forward with explosive allegations detailing manipulation, abusive behaviour, and disturbing misconduct during and before their relationship.

Speaking in a live audio recording, Obae said she felt compelled to speak out after realising “the depth of the depravity” surrounding Olubi, stressing that she does not consider herself a victim but believes the public needs to hear the truth. According to her, she first approached Olubi in September 2023 with the intention of forming a polyamorous relationship involving herself and her wife. She admitted that at the time, her interest was driven partly by financial motivations, as she hoped to leave corporate America.

Obae said the relationship began remotely and only became physical when she visited in December 2023, which was also the first time she met a junior employee Olubi was allegedly sexually involved with. Although the subordinate told her the relationship was cons+nsual, Obae now says she is ashamed she looked away, adding that she believes the situation was far more complicated and that more individuals may have been involved.

She also claimed she later became concerned about Olubi’s pattern of control, emotional detachment, and alleged mistreatment of domestic workers, describing his behaviour as manipulative, demeaning, and “psychotic.”

Obae revealed that she and Olubi eventually ended their relationship in June 2024 after months of conflict.

“However, she said what ultimately compelled her to speak publicly were revelations involving her sister’s marriage.

Breaking down at several points, Obae said she now feels she “brought a monster” into her marriage, insisting that the behaviour she witnessed was alarming and harmful not only to her, but to others in Olubi’s orbit.

Olubi had not responded to the controversy at press time.

    • Warns that full-blown strike may be inevitable

The Ibadan Zone of Academic Staff Union of Universities yesterday warned of a full-blown strike due to what it described as the discouraging manners in which the Federal Government has been handling the industrial dispute declared by the Union.

The Ibadan Zone of the Union, through its Coordinator, Prof. Biodun Olaniran, while addressing the press at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, stated that government functionaries were feeding the public with false stories while frustrating efforts to speedily conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

ASUU stated that the real demand “of our Union is the re-negotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement being currently handled by the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed-led Committee that will produce a new salary structure to replace the Consolidated University Salary Scale (CONUASS) given the galloping inflation in the country since then”.

ASUU declared a two-week warning strike on October 13, 2025. The strike was suspended five days to its expiration due to perceived genuine interventions from students, their parents, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the media and other critical stakeholders.

The union then gave a month window in line with the ultimatum given by the NLC for governments to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement as well as to resolve all the associated issues.

The Academic Staff Union (ASUU), Ibadan Zone comprises University of Ibadan, Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Osun State University, Osogbo, Kwara State University, Malete and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo.

The zonal press conference was addressed by the Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Biodun Olaniran, who was flanked by other chairmen from the zone, including Adefemi Afolabi (ASUU-UI), Alex Akanmu (ASUU-UNILORIN), Ben Olujimi Dada (ASUU-LAUTECH), Olaosebikan Wende (ASUU-UNIOSUN), Shehu Abdulganiyu Salau (ASUU-KWASU) and Michael Bamidele Ojo (ASUU-EAUED).

According to Prof. Olaniran, ASUU “had expected that a government focused on national development, technological innovation and advancement would spare no effort to work within the deadline by giving a marching order to its agents. Unfortunately, the Federal Government had been dealing with Union bereft of the seriousness the issues deserve.

“Regrettably, just about eight days to the expiration of the one-month window, nothing significant has been done other than the usual misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda.”

ASUU, while acknowledging “the release of part of the four-year promotion arrears, third-party deductions such as union dues, cooperative and pension deductions being flaunted by government, however, maintained that these should not be misconstrued by Nigerians as having resolved the demands of ASUU”.

The Union boss disclosed that “the just concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of ASUU held at Taraba State University, Jalingo on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November 2025 clinically X-rayed the state of our engagements with the Federal Government and Visitors to state universities.

“The current state of insecurity and excruciating economic situation in the country and its negative impacts on the welfare of the members of our ASUU calls for great concern by all stakeholders in the educational sector.

“The role being played by government functionaries in the process of renegotiating the Agreement with the Union is negatively worrisome, to say the least.

“Unless the Federal Government holds the bull by the horn, by offering a competitive salary structure within the remaining timeline, our students in the public universities across the nation may have their academic calendars disrupted once again.

“ASUU, Ibadan Zone, therefore identifies the urgent need to prevail on governments to avert this looming crisis.

“The counter offers made by Government through the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed-led Committee have been rejected firmly by our Union because it is inappropriate and unacceptable to make such ridiculous offers to academics who have been taking the same salaries for 16 years.

“This falls below what many West African countries pay their academics, while Nigerian politicians are the highest paid political office holders in Africa, if not globally. What is lacking is the political will and not the resources to fund qualitative education in Nigeria.”

Prof. Olaniran stated that “the three and a half months’ salaries of our members in federal universities, held on account of the federal government that provoked the strike of our union in 2022, are still being withheld by government.

“Many State Universities are yet to pay the withheld salaries; promotion arrears, and Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). For the avoidance of doubt, the Osun State University is yet to release the withheld salaries of the members of the Union from 2018 and 2020 and the arrears of the reduced 2015-2019 EAA.

“The story is the same at LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, where EAA and promotion arrears are still outstanding, KWASU has not benefitted from EAA and, like some other state varsities in the country.

“Our Union strongly frowns at this indifferent, anti-progress, anti-labour, and inhumane act. We, therefore, demand the unconditional payment of all withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and outstanding EAA to the academic members of staff of universities who are members of ASUU.”
